POP MONTREAL’S SYMPOSIUM

POP Montréal’s Symposium aims to empower, educate, and inspire by offering intimate access to the ideas and forces at the heart of today’s music world. The Symposium brings together a diverse range of presenters under the banner of music, in the broadest sense. All sessions focus on the relationship between art, culture, and creativity, with the aim of encouraging our community to build movements, strategise, and create.

This is an artist-driven music conference.
This is five days of workshops, panels, listening sessions, and keynote presentations about music, culture, and creativity.
This is exploding our ideas about how music is created, from cultural to practical production.
This is a meeting of musicians, writers, thinkers, experts, practitioners, listeners, and legends.

FILM POP

Our fifth year promises to be the best yet, featuring our usual selection of quality shorts and features garnered from innumerable international submissions.

Old Favorites and New Horizons

This is a year of old favorites revisited and new horizons realized without compromising the underground spirit that is the POP legacy. Making Music with the NFB returns to sponsor a masterclass taught by the legendary music documentarian Jem Cohen, who has worked with the likes of Patti Smith and Fugazi.

FILM POP is a MUSIC FILM festival!

This year’s films have a stronger music focus than ever before. Whether it’s Wizard rock inspired by Harry Potter or the under-appreciated genius of Arthur Russell-FILM POP has it covered. In addition to ‘Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell’ and ‘We are Wizards’ we will be screening a fascinating documentary about Robert Moog and Eileen Yaghoobian’s ‘Died Young Stayed Pretty’-a radical film about the politics and aesthetics of North American poster art. We are proud to present an outstanding array of short films as well, including court 13 productions’ ‘Glory at Sea’-winner of the Wholphin Award at South by Southwest 2008, and the first film effort from Saskatoon based artist Amelie Atkins, ‘Three Minute Miracle’.

Not to be Missed!
Our special events will include what promises to be a gorgeous evening showcasing Vincent Moon of La Blogotheque’s Concerts Pour Emporter (takeaway shows) and a crazy night of all things Rockabilly at the Montreal premier of ‘Rockabilly 514′. We have tons more killer programming up our metaphorical sleeves, as well as a party or two that you won’t want to miss.

These are just the teasers, so leave your antennas up to receive more details as we send them out over the airwaves.
