BIOGRAPHY:
At a time when true pop music stars are few and far between and urban music also seems in need of a fresh new voice, enter Sariah–a vocalist offering the best of both worlds.
With her debut EP via Rock Ridge Music due later this year, Sariah blends power pop ballads and sexy seductive hip-hop tracks with an effortless flow that would make heroes like Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys proud.
So, who is this next big thing? Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Sariah was raised in the same Boston streets that produced pop idols like New Edition, New Kids On The Block and JoJo.
Sariah was bitten by the performance bug at an early age and was involved in choir, musical theater, and various types of dance. While in high school, she began taking vocal lessons and recording. It was then that she realized that music was not only her passion but her future.
“It’s always been about the performance,” Sariah explains. “That’s what got me into music in the first place. I love the positive feedback that you get from a live performance. It’s instant.”
At the age of 18, the young starlet moved to New York to pursue her big dream, a while keeping one foot on the ground by enrolling as a college student at Marymount Manhattan College. Studying theater, of course. However, when she wasn’t hitting the books, she was hard at work with renowned choreographer, Rhapsody, and a team of producers, including Andy Marvel (Madonna), Martin Briley (Daughtry), Jeff Franzel (’NSync), setting a foundation for what would soon become the Sariah sound.
“My sound is urban pop–pop with an urban/jazz feel to it,” she says of that sound. While many up and coming artists would be content just to sing someone else’s lyrics, Sariah is not. “From the beginning I always wrote or was incorporated in songwriting. I didn’t think it would be believable if I didn’t write my own music. So, there was never a question that I would always be a part of that process.”
The result of all that hard work is an impressive six-track EP (the iTunes version will have an exclusive bonus track) that highlights her many facets both as a woman and as an artist. The sun-kissed reggae riddims of “Hypnotic” showcase both Sariah’s sensual side and her work ethic. “This was the hardest song to record because the producer, Mr. Fantastic, was really very detailed and very specific–down to the whisper.”
Similarly, Sariah opens her heart and shares her experience as an aspiring artist on the soul-stirring ballad, “Climb.” Produced by Adrian Gurvitz, the moving lyrics and melody convey an emotion beyond the young songstress’ years.
And for the hip-hop heads who like to nod their heads on the way to the club, Sariah drops the appropriately-titled club anthem “Let’s Bump Tonight.” This radio-ready single is full of street swagger and just the right amount of sexiness to attract both the guys and the girls.
Sariah’s unique sound is only complimented by her one of a kind style that she describes as both “very sexy, and very powerful.” “I can switch up from sexy powerful businesswoman to a no holds barred entertainer.” That versatility is also illustrated in her live show.
A true showstopper, Sariah believes in putting on a full-on high-energy show from start to finish–complete with dance moves from noted choreographer Rhapsody. “I like shocking people who don’t expect to see me put on a show like that. Even with my name, people don’t know what to expect and I like breaking those preconceived notions.”
It is those preconceived notions that have left pop music in the rut that it’s in now. There seems to be a lack of passion in the business, but Sariah will more than make up for that.
“I am doing this for the passion and love of music… not for the bling or fame. I just want to tour and bring my music to people. A lot of people are in this for the wrong reason. I will do whatever it takes to prove that. I want to be an inspiration.”
