EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT: APRIL/MAY RELEASES ~Black Label Society, Styx, Gary Moore, Miles Davis, Black Crowes, Charles Mingus, Return To Forever, Diana Krall, and Moody Blues~
Spring is right around the corner, and Eagle Rock is kicking out fresh jams for a lively season. Check out what’s in store:
APRIL 21
Black Label Society/Skullage/CD, DVD, and CD/DVD
This CD/DVD career retrospective is like a good mosh pit – brutal, satisfying, and full of unexpected events. Follow Zakk Wylde & Co. through live sets (featuring acoustic versions of “The Blessed Hellride,” “Spoke In The Wheel,” and “Stillborn”), their most innovative music videos, and some down time with the Wylde-man himself. The CD is chock-full of classic material from the band’s 10-year career. This is one set no metal fan should be without. The CD and DVD will also be available individually.
Styx/One With Everything/Blu-Ray
Originally released on standard DVD in November 2006, One With Everything is an incredible night featuring Styx backed by a 115-piece orchestra. Conducted by Liza Grossman, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra added full-scale embellishment to Styx’s already full-bodied sound on classics such as “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man,” and “Crystal Ball.” This concert DVD is now available in the pristine Blu-Ray format.
Gary Moore & Friends/One Night In Dublin – A Tribute To Phil Lynott/Blu-Ray
Phil Lynott would have celebrated his 56th birthday on August 20, 2005. On this night, Thin Lizzy member Gary Moore rounded up drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Scott Gorham, and other musicians to play a set in the late bassist’s memory. Full of Thin Lizzy classics, such as “Jailbreak,” “Don’t Believe A Word,” and “The Boys Are Back In Town,”, this great night is now available in the Blu-Ray format. This was originally released on standard DVD March 2006.
APRIL 28
Miles Davis/That’s What Happened – Live in Germany 1987/DVD
Shortly after adding another Grammy to his collection, Miles Davis headed to Germany to play a live set in 1987. This night of awe-inspiring trumpet riddled innovative jazz, features tracks from his recently awarded Tutu album, as well as Davis’ interpretations of Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” Completing the DVD is a 30-minute interview with the legendary musician in his absolute prime.
Charles Mingus/Epitaph/DVD
A decade after Maestro Mingus’s death in 1979, Gunther Schuller conducted a 30-piece orchestra at New York City’s Alice Tully Hall on June 3, 1989 for the World Premiere performance of the largest and longest piece for jazz orchestra ever composed (over two hours), “Epitaph.” Described by the New York Times as “one of the most memorable jazz events of the decade,” it had been discovered posthumously and painstakingly restored. Viewed through the lens of history, Mingus was a titan, a turbulent, difficult, complex man, andone of America’s greatest composers.
Black Crowes/Warpaint Live/2CD
2008 was a good year for The Black Crowes. Shortly after the release of their Warpaint album, they played a set of the entire album live. This 2CD set (an accompanying DVD will be released later this year) captures the Brothers Robinson and crew delivering their signature brand of cut-loose blues-infused rock ‘n’ roll.
MAY 12
Return To Forever/Live at Montreux 2008/DVD & Blu-Ray
Return To Forever fans enjoying the Returns CD (released March 17) will get a visual treat when their 2008 stop at the Montreux Jazz Festival is released on DVD and Blu-Ray May 12th. The rich-textured sounds which melded from the alignment of pianist Chick Corea, guitarist Al Di Meola, bassist Stanley Clarke, and drummer Lenny White kick-started the jazz-rock fusion scene of the ’70s. It was in 2008 that this line-up re-united for their first tour in 25 years, proving that they haven’t lost their chops, or their ability to mesmerize a crowd.
MAY 26
Diana Krall/Live in Rio/DVD & Blu-Ray
Grammy-winning Jazz Vocalist Diana Krall has made her mark in Rio. In November 2008, she graced the stage of the Vivo Rio club with a catalogue of her standards, from “The Boy From Ipanema” to “Quiet Nights” (from her forthcoming album of the same title). A special unplugged set is also featured, with Krall performing on the rooftop of her hotel with legendary Brazilian artist Carlos Lyra.
Moody Blues/Live at the Isle of Wight/DVD
Fans awaiting the DVD companion to the Live at the Isle of Wight CD (released August 26, 2008 on Eagle Rock) need wait no longer. When singer/songwriter/guitarist Justin Hayward, bassist John Lodge, keyboardist Michael Pinder, drummer Graeme Edge, and singer/songwriter/flautist Ray Thomas hit the stage in 1970 at this renowned rock festival, it was absolutely electric. Their fusion of hard rock and classical music made them stand out from the crowd, paving the way for an artistic new take on progressive rock.
Gary Moore/Essential Montreux/5CD
For those who can’t get enough Gary, Eagle has just the ticket. They delivered two new albums in the last few years (Close As You Get – May 2006 and Bad For You Baby – October 2008), as well as the live Gary Moore & Friends – One Night In Dublin – A Tribute To Phil Lynott DVD (originally released March 2006, coming to Blu-ray April 21). This May, look for an indulgence of Gary’s appearances at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival when this gorgeous 5CD set hits stores.
