Los Angeles band The 88, while on tour recently with The B-52s, discovered the iPhone app FourTrack and decided to use it to record their new song “Love Is The Thing”, employing a variety of innovative DIY techniques such as a sheet-shrouded child’s drum kit. It turned out so well, they’ve put it up for sale on iTunes. They may indeed be the first band to have done so – and, literally overnight, it became their “Top Song” on iTunes.

They’ve posted a “how to” video blog here:

The 88 has always been very hands-on when it comes to technology and have taken on a lot of their own production in the past. That ended up being an uncomfortable situation for them in some ways when they signed to a major label – being so used to having direct control, they found it a bit constricting to have a host of others helping shape their sound. Now that they are indie once again, they’re being creative and cutting edge while using tools that everyone else can use, too!
