ØYA FESTIVAL AND OH MY ROCKNESS ANNOUNCE LINEUP FOR CMJ SHOWCASE AT SANTOS PARTY HOUSE 10/21

Including performances from I Was a King, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Ungdomskulen, Deastro and Many More!

Øya Festival (Oslo) and Oh My Rockness are teaming up once again for another fantastic collaboration at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon ’09. Bringing together some of the best up-and-coming Norwegian and US talent, Øya maintains its unsurpassed reputation for being up-to-date on modern music, joining forces with tastemakers Oh My Rockness to curate a CMJ ’09 showcase at Santos Party House [96 Lafayette St.], Wed. Oct. 21st. This year’s showcase will feature rising Norwegian artists I Was a King and Ungdomskulen. Doors are at 6:30pm, with a special cocktail hour provided by Øya Festival and Music Export Norway to kick off the event.

Norwegian trio Ungdomskulen wanted to rock on a regular basis and so they did. After writing songs in their fish house studio in Bergen, they recorded their debut, Cry Baby, and toured the globe, including two UK tours with their biggest fans, Young Knives and shows at CMJ and SXSW festivals in the US. A few weeks prior to the recording of their second album, Bisexual, the band’s rehearsal space burned down to the ground. This incident had a great impact on the trio and proof of this phoenix-from -the-flames inspiration is found in the band’s stunning new single, “Idunno.”

I Was a King’s self-titled album (featuring Sufjan Stevens, Danielson, and members of Ladybug Transistor and Serena Maneesh) was released earlier this year on The Control Group (Wildbirds and Peacedrums, El Perro Del Mar), and the band embarked on a successful debut US tour with The Constantines and Crystal Antlers behind it. I Was a King is a Paste “Emergent Artist,” Stereogum “Band To Watch”, were featured on NPR, Pitchfork and the RollingStone “Hype Monitor,” and My Old Kentucky Blog called them, “the jangly stepbrothers (and sister) of The Weakerthans.
