A FINE FRENZY TO RELEASE OH BLUE CHRISTMAS EP
Wasting no time following up its acclaimed second album, Bomb in a Birdcage, A FINE FRENZY—led by Alison Sudol—has announced a special treat for the holidays. On November 3, 2009, the band will be releasing the six-song EP Oh Blue Christmas, available exclusively at Target, Target.com and the Target area on iTunes. The whimsical collection contains three holiday classics (”Blue Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” and “Christmas Time is Here,” from the beloved Charlie Brown Christmas) alongside three seasonal Sudol originals (”Redribbon Foxes,” “Winter White,” and “Wish You Well”).
“It was the most wonderful thing,” says the singer of the recording sessions for Oh Blue Christmas, which saw the band expanding its sound with accents from horns, mandolins, and pedal-steel guitars. “We all holed up in (producer) David Bianco’s lovely studio, which was built in the ’70s and hasn’t changed much since then—and though it was the sticky, hot LA summer outside, inside, it was snowy, delightful Christmastime.”
The EP is coming out while A Fine Frenzy is in the midst of a nationwide tour, which concludes at Anaheim, CA’s House of Blues on November 18; rising stars Landon Pigg and Among the Oak & Ash are opening the shows. Highlights from a special preview concert in East Hampton, New York, which was filmed over the summer by the public television series Live from the Artists Den, can be seen exclusively on hulu.com.
The early response to Bomb in a Birdcage (which was a Number One Top Pop Album and #3 on the Top Overall Album iTunes chart and reached #2 on the Amazon MP3 Best Sellers chart) has been extraordinary. Billboard wrote that the album’s songs “churn like giddy summer romances, nailing the delicate balance of charming and smart,” while Vogue described the album’s first single, “Blow Away,” as “irresistible” and “sunny without being saccharine.” VH1 and MTVU added “Blow Away” to their rotations, and the song was AOL’s “Video of the Day” on September 17.
The album is the follow-up to 2007’s One Cell in the Sea, which reached Number One on Billboard’s “Heatseeker” charts, and received rave reviews in publications from Entertainment Weekly to Paste to People. A Fine Frenzy was chosen as a VH1 “You Oughta Know” artist; appeared on The Tonight Show, The CBS Early Show and The Late Show with David Letterman; and toured extensively alongside the likes of Rufus Wainwright and Brandi Carlile.
Born in Seattle and raised in Los Angeles, 24-year-old singer and songwriter Sudol was active on Twitter (@AFineFrenzy) long before it became a cultural phenomenon—to the point that she now has over a million followers, making her one of the top ten musicians on the service, alongside super stars like Britney Spears and John Mayer. The surprising decision to record Oh Blue Christmas before Bomb in a Birdcage was even released—a choice sure to delight her fans—is evidence that Sudol and her bandmates are truly bursting with creative energy.
“We basically put down six songs in five days,” says Sudol, “recording everything together around an invisible campfire, everyone picking up different instruments and playing them on a moment’s notice. There was definitely some holiday magic in the air that week.”
