Indie rock fans can be a challenge to shop for since they’re likely to already own even the most obscure releases by their favorite bands. Enter Yellow Bird Project (YBP), a Canadian non-profit organization that’s enlisted a wide array of today’s most vital and visual indie rock artists to create unique t-shirt designs, with all profits benefiting charities of the artists’ choice. Now, just in time for the holidays, YBP is debuting new t-shirt designs from three bands.
Proceeds from Bloc Party’s t-shirt, a richly hued landscape on a black shirt, will benefit Bread & Roses Community Fund. Grizzly Bear’s striking black and white abstract illustration appears on a white t-shirt; proceeds from its sale will go to Brighter Planet Vibrant pinstripes adorn Metric’s purple t-shirt, which urges “keep the dream tight” and benefits MusiCounts
The new designs – and previous offerings from over 20 other bands – can be seen and ordered at www.yellowbirdproject.com. T-shirts are $25 each plus shipping and handling.
Time recently featured Yellow Bird Project’s The Indie Rock Coloring Book (Chronicle Books, $10) in its Holiday Gift Guide 2009 that singled out gifts that give back. “What’s not to like?” asked The Boston Globe. “We might just buy a new 120-count box of Crayolas to celebrate.”
The Indie Rock Coloring Book is packed with coloring and activity pages by acclaimed English artist/graphic designer Andy J. Miller, whose work was recently exhibited as part of the prestigious Beck’s Fusions 2008.The drawings were inspired by and created in conjunction with indie rock artists who have previously teamed up with YBP, including Rilo Kiley, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Joseph Arthur, The New Pornographers, The Shins and The National, to name a few. The book is intended to raise awareness of the Yellow Bird Project and its contributing artists with all royalties earned benefiting the charities that have been chosen by YBP artists.
“We, Rilo Kiley, were honored to be asked to be part of this project,” writes Rilo Kiley bassist Pierre de Reeder in the book’s forward. “This wonderful coloring book…is a great example of how you can turn your love for music and art into something that can really help.”
The Indie Rock Coloring Book is available at major retailers or at www.yellowbirdproject.com. And now music fans can play “Color Me Indie” with their friends. The interactive, collaborative group drawing game can be found at http://colormeindie.yellowbirdproject.com/. The newly launched microsite was designed by illustrator Andy J. Miller as a companion to The Indie Rock Coloring Book.
Yellow Bird Project, founded in 2006 by lifelong friends Matt Stotland and Casey Cohen, is devoted to bringing together the worlds of music, art and charity. YBP gives fans the opportunity to support and promote their favorite musicians while simultaneously raising money for such diverse charitable organizations as Art For Change, Transportation Alternatives, AIDS Society of Canada, Teenage Cancer Trust, Free Arts For Abused Children, Safe Space and The Elliott Smith Memorial Fund, among others.
