Chicago sonic juggernaut D. Rider have spent the last year touring, recording, and staring into the abyss of discordance, and are now prepared to present the world with their greatest achievement: The Raw Dents, out May 6th on Tizona Records.
In 2009, they released their darkly psychedelic debut album, Mother Of Curses, while playing shows across the country. The original lineup of former U.S. Maple guitarist Todd Rittmann (vocals, guitar, harmonica, drums), Andrea Faught (synth, vocals, horns), and Noah Tabakin (saxophone, vocals, synth) saw the addition of Theo Katsaounis on drums to complete a live act that would tour the country and gain a reputation as a challenging and entertaining powerhouse. Early 2010 culminated in the addition of fellow Chicagoan Matt Espy on drums, initially as a substitute. It soon became clear that his chemistry with the band was too potent to ignore, so he joined the official lineup, completing the roster.
The result is The Raw Dents, and the lineup isn’t the only thing that transformed. This record continues the band’s trajectory of balancing fresh syncopated rhythmic ideas with bold, and sometimes abrasive sonic textures, but the sound has evolved into a total juxtapositions between harmony and noise, chaos and groove, bombast and space, beauty and disaster. Though the emphasis is on songwriting here, the players are free to subvert. The hooks are designed more like events than simple repeating motifs, harmony and dissonance are embraced with equal measure.
One final thing: In honor of the new additions to the band, the band has de-truncated their name. D. Rider is dead. Long live Dead Rider.
Praise for Mother of Curses:
“A complex album built on overlapping rhythms, Mother Of Curses is a pleasure to wrap your ears around. D. Rider has created one of the first great rock efforts of 2009.” – ALARM Magazine
“Mother of Curses is a post-punk kitchen-sink masterpiece… Is it too early to pick my favorite album of the year?” – Alternative Press
“…D. Rider is expanding the boundaries of what a rock band can sound like while maintaining it’s credibility. The hypnotic continuity of their debut work is unexpected and requires the listener to think newly upon what they expect from independent music these days.” – CMJ
