CFCF RELEASES DEBUT FULL-LENGTH CONTINENT TODAY OFFERS COVER OF FLEETWOOD MAC’S “BIG LOVE” FOR FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD AND IF YOU MISSED IT, CFCF’S COVER OF OMC’S “HOW BIZARRE” COURTESY OF STEREOGUM

Montreal-based DJ and electronic artist CFCF (aka Michael Silver) releases his anticipated full-length debut, Continent, today on Paper Bag Records! The twelve-track album (which features Silver’s own spin on Fleetwood Mac’s song “Big Love”) is the followup to CFCF’s set of celebrated EPs, Panesian Nights and The Explorers (featuring label mate Sally Shapiro), both released earlier this year.

CFCF has been creating tracks since his pre-teens and has only begun to present his music publicly in the last couple of years. CFCF’s career began to take off with his contest winning remix of Crystal Castles “Air War” and has followed up with a chain reaction of official remixes for talents such as Sally Shapiro, The Presets, HEALTH, The Teenagers and Hearts Revolution among many others.

“For the songs on this album I usually started with an idea in mind of a specific atmosphere I wanted to convey,” says Silver. “That atmosphere, whether it was something hazy, nostalgic, otherworldly or unsettling, was always the first thing to come to a track. The songs range from mid-tempo nu-disco to balearic, house to ambient. Often the basis of the atmosphere was culled from films by Werner Herzog, Michael Mann, David Lynch, and David Cronenberg as well as countless musical influences including Arthur Russell, Saint Etienne, and Tangerine Dream.”

“Like many people his age, Silver obsesses over childhood ephemera. But rather than sate his yearnings with late night eBay binges on Ghostbusters memorabilia, he resurrects ’80s keys and synths, modifying them into a hybrid of sturdy structure mixed with vintage minor chord melody.” – The Fader ‘Gen F’ Feature

“The first sounds… are a slow, bouncing beat matched by a handful of poignant synth tones that could have swirled straight from the hands of a lovesick android… ‘Continent’ is loaded with disco, boogie, Italo, and house influences…”- XLR8R “Artists To Watch”

“CFCF’s debut album ‘Continent’ glides along as if soundtracking its own slick future noir film…sure-footed, elegantly stated electro-pop.”- Pitchfork “Rising” Artist

“Silver’s work is a resurgence of the vibrant disco scene that took over nightclubs in the late-’70s and early-’80s…the songs on ‘Continent’ add up to a cohesive, inviting artist that will appeal to old fans of his remix work while appealing to a truckload of new folks looking for a little more dreamy disco in their lives.” – AOL Spinner

“Seems like everything Montreal’s CFCF touches lately turns to gold. The kid is currently making some of the most authentic, classiest, exquisitely executed disco around.” – Gorilla Vs. Bear

CLASS ACTRESS TO RELEASE DEBUT EP ON TERRIBLE RECORDS

“CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY” MP3 NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

Class Actress began in Elizabeth Harper’s bedroom along with producer/psychoanalyst Mark Richardson and some choice vintage synths. The songs quickly grew legs, strutted out of the Greenpoint apartment and now can be seen lighting up all over dark stages. The band pulls from a variety of styles, ranging from the 80’s synth pop of Depeche Mode and New Order, the vivaciousness and sexuality of early Madonna, and the bubbly heartbreak of Mazzy Star.

“Class Actress is: Guilty Pleasure. NSA dance music. Casual Encounters. Stalker Pop. “Depeche Mode meets early Madonna and Five Star as played on KTU Radio in the leather backseat of a cab”. Class Actress is not: Acting Class”. -Caroline Polachek (Chairlift)

Class Actress’ debut EP, entitled Journal of Ardency, comes out February 9 on Terrible Records (Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear’s new label with Ethan Silverman), available digitally and on 10″ vinyl. It also features songs produced by Scott Rosenthal and Jorge Elbrecht of Lansing-Drieden fame.

“Unabashedly slick electro-pop beats juxtaposed with coy, romantically depressed vocals courtesy of star-in-the-making Elizabeth Harper.” – (Cover Story) Brooklyn’s Sonic Boom – The 40 Songs That Define the Sound — New York Magazine

“Elizabeth Harper is a Class Actress, that being the name of her musical solo-project-cum-band, an electro-pop outfit sonically not to far afield of their Brooklyn neighbors Chairlift…a stack of interesting, well-composed retro new wave, and the exuberant drum-machine beat and Tears for Fears synths on “All the Saints” are tied together with Harper’s romantically smoky vocal performance.” – Pitchfork

“All the Saints” is built firmly around a squelchy Italo bass synth and vocalist Elizabeth Harper’s aggressively playful performance. Class Actress might reside in the current indie band Mecca, but they sound like citizens, not pilgrims.” – PrefixMag

“Harper is a beauty with a voice like a sleepy winter afternoon. Alternately playful and melancholy, Harper’s songwriting is reminiscent of the Smiths.” – Time Out New York

“Impeccable in both presentation and performance, [Class Actress'] songs recall Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, and New Order at their most tasteful.” – Flavorpill

“We’ve gone on record repeatedly about how much we love Elizabeth Harper, and we stand by our assertion that she’s fronting one of the most promising bands in New York City….She’s got one of the best voices we’ve ever heard and her taste in accompaniment is impeccable” – L Magazine

The Subjects – Free song – Winter Vacation off their New Soft Shoe EP

Daytrotter: “The line I want to use to describe The Subjects is from the exasperated phone call scene in ‘Back to Future’, where Marvin Berry- wth his bloddy, bandaged playing hand – punches his cousin Chuck’s phone number and says, “You know that new sound you’ve been looking for? Well, listen to this…”

The Washington Post: “(Dave Sheinkopf’s) pleasantly nasal voice floats over the jangly guitars with just enough off-beat accents and unhinged passion.”

Consequence Of Sound: “… classical work with eccentric pop work that is light and fresh with just enough thud and kick to it.”

San Diego News: “…great harmonies.”

KEXP Seattle: “Another New York band for Seattleites to fall in love with.”

Magnet Magazine: “…remarkably solid…”

The Onion: “The Subjects sound reflects its make-up, with exuberant power-pop full of shambling guitars balanced by slower thoughtfulness.”

Despite their clandestine and controversial beginnings (two band members were teachers and two were students at the same high school), The Subjects have managed to carve a name for themselves that sounds more like “Rushmore” than “School of Rock.” Back in 2002, guitarist Joe Smith and bassist/vocalist Dave Sheinkopf were splitting their time between writing songs and syllabi, while drummer/vocalist Matt Iwanusa and guitarist Jimmy Carbonetti were about to bust out of the same Manhattan school. Since both parties were in desperate need of a full band, they held some rehearsals and once it became clear that the quartet’s chemistry was pretty damn combustible, the Subjects were born.

Fast-forward a few years and things get a bit more complicated. The Subjects’ debut is dropped (2007’s With the Ease Grace Precision and Cleverness of Human Beings) and they hit the road, at first on their own and then with the Walkmen a few months later.

“We were always serious about playing music,” says Iwanusa, “but when we started meeting and playing with bands that were making music for a living we got to see how they did it.”

Keeping that career path in mind, the Subjects dove right into the demo stages for New Soft Shoe, firing up minimalist recordings in the style of their first full-length. Once those songs were ready for a proper studio, the band headed over to Key Club Recording Co. a couple hours outside Chicago. By working closely with Key Club’s masterful engineers, William Skibbe and Jessica Ruffins (see also: rock-solid releases from Cass McCombs, The Kills and Fiery Furnaces), the Subjects were able to whip up their wildest ideas, expanding their arsenal with everything from old-fashioned organs to honky-tonk pianos to Matt’s mom on saxophone.

“A lot of the instrumentation on this record came from stuff I learned in school—stuff I never thought I’d use,” says Sheinkopf, citing his training in classical harmony.

The first thing you’ll notice about the final product is the vocals—the way the melody in “Winter Vacation” unfolds like a spare Animal Collective A-Side; the brilliant shuffleboard beats/honeyed harmonies of “Right2Know.” Beyond that, the ep spreadsthe Subjects’ various strengths across the divergent tastes of four distinct songwriters in just 10 minutes. Well, divergent in terms of pulling cues from several eras and subgenres. All and all, the current state of the Subjects is as cohesive as a dictator-less band gets.

“Most of the arrangements on the first record are within the constraints of a four-piece band,” explains Iwanusa. “Now everyone’s more comfortable trying to sing and play different instruments. We all stepped it up this time.”

The disc, titled Xenophanes is a major step from the Grammy-winning guitar legend — and we don’t use the word “legend” lightly, Rolling Stone hails him among their “Greatest Guitarists of All Time”, placing him on that issue’s cover.

Check out the first MP3, “Mundo De Ciegos” (HERE). Last week, MySpace Music offered an exclusive preview of the album. And, this week only, AOL’s Spinner.com is streaming the entire album — listen HERE.

Wikipedia tells us that Xenophanes was a Greek philosopher, poet, and social and religious critic of the 5th century BC. His pantheistic conception of the Universe supposed that everything in existence has always existed. He rejected his contemporaries’ notions of an anthropomorphic “god” (or hierarchy of gods) in favor of a concept not the least bit irrelevant to our 21st century mindset, that of a singular (and hence, all-encompassing) global consciousness. His unorthodox concepts were not widely acknowledged until many hundreds of years after his death, and suffice to say, their material concerns are primarily those which humans wage war over two-and-a-half millennia later. Little surprise, then, that this iconoclastic anomaly of a man should lend his name to a new concept album by The Mars Volta’s hyper-prolific mastermind, Omar Rodriguez Lopez.

The inaugural recording from Rodriguez Lopez’s low-profile compound in Zapopan, Mexico, Xenophanes is the first album which finds him at the helm vocally and lyrically, as well as musically. Sung entirely in Spanish, Xenophanes showcases a side of Omar rarely seen before, allowing for a much more gestural experience of the man rather than simply the musician, and truly distinguishing this album from its myriad predecessors. Equal parts Volta bombast, El Grupo Nuevo… technicality, and a textural richness unequaled on prior solo releases, Xenophanes is a triumph of imagination and an inspired, concise statement. A conceptual journey through life, death, and re-birth, the album tells the story of a selfish and judgmental female caseworker who falls in love with a male client, only for him to die soon thereafter. Over the course of eleven subsequent lifetimes, the woman experiences life from every conceivable vantage point as her soul evolves, thereby allowing the maturity and eventual letting-go of her ego which in turn enables the realization that the man was, and always has been, her father spirit. Suggesting the fractal and holographic nature of both consciousness and physical reality, the concepts embraced on Xenophanes will appear at least vaguely familiar to anyone with experience in the psychedelic and/or shamanic realms; concepts which Xenophanes himself was likely the first to express within the confines of Western philosophy.

In order to execute the unpredictable, emotionally-charged compositions on Xenophanes, Rodriguez Lopez once again enlists his veteran co-conspirators: bassist Juan Alderete de la Peña, drummer Thomas Pridgen and keyboardist/percussionist Marcel Rodriguez Lopez. Additionally, the album includes contributions from Mark Aanderud (additional keyboards), as well as the notable voice of Ximena Sariñana, doubling and backing Rodriguez Lopez’s vocals. As Sariñana’s presence on Omar’s recordings and during live performances has already been a cause for much speculation, it should be made clear that Xenophanes does not feature the accomplished and versatile singer’s own vocal compostions. Subsequent releases (the forthcoming Los Suenos De Un Hidago and Ciencia De Los Inutiles albums, for instance) will fully showcase Sariñana’s penchant for infectious melody and engaging lyrics.

ARMS RELEASES US DEBUT, KIDS AFLAME, OUT NOW ON GIGANTIC MUSIC! OFFERS NEW “TIGER TAMER” MP3 FOR FREE DOWNLOAD

Gigantic Music (The Walkmen, Harlem Shakes) is pleased to announce the long-awaited release of ARMS (Todd Goldstein, guitarist for Harlem Shakes)’ full-length debut, Kids Aflame, in the US! Previously only available on import through Melodic Records in the UK, the US version of Kids Aflame, complete with bonus tracks, is out this week digitally through Gigantic Music! In celebration of Kids Aflame’s release, Todd is giving away a free mp3 Download for the song “Tiger Tamer” off the record. After several performances at CMJ last week, ARMS will also be playing a CD release show in NYC at Pianos on Thursday, November 12th.

To people with a passing interest in such things, Todd Goldstein is the guitarist in the Brooklyn indie-pop band Harlem Shakes. To those who listen closely, though, Todd Goldstein is ARMS, a persona he’s been crafting since 2004. As ARMS, Goldstein takes up a decidedly slower, sweeter, sloppier endeavor, working alone and singing in a sad, idiosyncratic baritone. By most definitions of the well-worn term, Kids Aflame is a lo-fi album-Goldstein cobbled the record together over three years, holing up with a single microphone and a laptop in a series of rickety bedroom recording spaces. And yet, the songs speak to something grander than lo-fi’s usual emotional vocabulary, harnessing elements of shoegaze and classic country,

For all of the labels that could apply to ARMS, Goldstein’s mission is simple: to build music that keeps lonely listeners company and guides them safely through the night.

“A wild and refreshingly noisy ride.” -NME

“Bedroom-crafted gems that range from Juno-ready ukulele jams to spazzy freak outs.” – SPIN.com “25 Must-Hear Artists from the CMJ Festival”

“a one-man pop confectionary machine created by Todd Goldstein… ARMS’ debut has already been warmly embraced in the UK, but now those in need of swoon-appropriate melancholy-pop can finally get their paws on this little gem.” – Interview Magazine

“…quite impressive” – Huffington Post

“A fine debut album matching both the romantic streak of Conor Oberst and multi-instrumental sophistication of Sufjan Stevens” –Q Magazine (**** ‘Recommended’)

“…understated and intricately crafted folk bound by unpretentious harmonies, tambourines and a chorus of finger-snapping. Over the course of the album Goldstein develops his deeply textured landscape, adding handclaps, palm pats and other unorthodox percussion to his homegrown sonics while creating a signature sound that should launch his solo career.” – CMJ

“New York indie rock vet Todd Goldstein pops out a solo project that… refuses to settle on one sound…an effervescent affair with a proper dose of gravity…to which we say: Amen.” – Black Book

“You could dig through a whole month’s worth of fuzzy, home-recorded pop and not find a record as sweetly weird, as intelligently eccentric as this one. (Some of us have.) ‘Kids Aflame’ is the good stuff, as loosely played as it is meticulously plotted.” –Dusted Magazine

To listen to Blacklist is to listen to people who have chosen to stand in opposition. Complex and modern themes are wound tightly inside impressionistic lyrics, available to be unravelled by the curious listener or ignored by those who find themselves moved primarily by the force of the music. The band’s debut LP, Midnight Of The Century, is raw ambition mixed with raw power. Mixed by Ed Buller (Suede, Slowdive, Pulp, White Lies) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Muse, Jeff Buckley, Iron Maiden, U2, Nirvana), it is a potent dose of rock and roll maximalism.

When the revolutionary Victor Serge coined the idea of a midnight in the century, he was referring to the dark pact between two of the cruelest tyrants the world had ever seen. And yet Serge is perhaps best known for his rambunctious, stubborn attitude in the face of such darkness: “the course is set on hope,” he wrote. It is precisely this marriage of extremity to romantic optimism that characterizes Midnight Of The Century — not just in the realm of ideas, but musically as well. Despite its density of sound and shadowy atmospheres, the record is the soundtrack to an uplifting journey that is as personal as it is universal. It is also a fitting manifesto announcing the arrival of Blacklist.

Hailing from Brooklyn, Blacklist is one of the flagship bands of painter Pieter Schoolwerth’s Wierd Records imprint. The band creates atmospheric modern rock music that has been described as anthemic, darkly romantic, and “a much-needed anomaly” (Other Music) in NYC’s music scene. They are sometimes classified as part of the post-punk revival, though the sound is generally more dense, sonically incorporating elements of shoegaze and heavy metal with coldwave. The members often cite influences like My Bloody Valentine, Motörhead and Black Sabbath alongside bands like The Comsat Angels, Wire, Killing Joke, and The Sound.

“In a way it’s a little bit schizophrenic, well, not schizophrenic, but dual. We enjoy listening to metal and playing metal-ish kind of stuff, but at the same time we are also listening to the post-punk bands and our performance incorporates both as well as many other elements” is how singer/guitarist Josh Strawn describes it. Drummer Glenn Maryansky continues, “I tell people live we are like the Lively Art bands were – sort of in-between Ride and The Cure’s Faith. We feel a connection to the French Wave scene. We love that over-the-top production that the metal bands have but also the sophisticated spirit of Joy Division and early Cure stuff. There’s denseness and this druggie quality to it but also this smartness and attention to detail”.

That attention to detail is part of what has brought critical acclaim to Blacklist’s live show. Metromix, who cites the bands as a MUST SEE during this week’s CMJ says: “after hearing the shimmering guitars, crisp drums and dramatic, Goth-y vocal tics of Josh Strawn on the band’s new single “Flight of the Demoiselles,” you might be tempted to break out the Cult’s old “Love” album—or anything by Bauhaus”

Blacklist are not to be missed live. For all media inquires, guest lists, cds, interviews please contact Magnum PR.

“equal parts pornography, poetry, post-punk and politics” – The Big Takeover

“enough honest blood, sweat and tears on each of the eleven tracks to attract a solid following from the most jaded of music fans out there.” – Fazer

“Blacklist is simultaneously celebratory and melancholy… they create the soundtrack to an explosive resistance” – RCRD LBL

LITTLE GIRLS RELEASE NEW VIDEO FOR “YOUTH TUNES” + “GROWING” MP3, CMJ THIS WEEK! CHECK OUT THE PITCHFORK TV PREMIERE OF “YOUTH TUNES“NEW SONG NEW SONG “GROWING” AVAILABLE FOR FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD

Toronto-based group Little Girls (Josh McIntyre and co.) are releasing the two songs that bookend their debut full-length, Concepts, as they make a pit stop at CMJ on their North American tour with Japandroids, Monotonix, You Say Party! We Say Die! Wavves, and Nurses among others. The first is a haunting and painstakingly hand-colored video for intro track, “Youth Tunes” (click for Vimeo embed link), directed by Felix Kalmenson, and the second is a free mp3 download of the last track “Growing,” a song Stereogum calls “dark lo-fi” that “sounds more like a full band, which sets them apart from the bedroom set.”

Little Girls’ debut full-length, Concepts, is an eleven-track album that spans from the very first Little Girls track ever written to brand new material. Concepts includes the songs that sparked early blog attention off their MySpace (recorded in Josh’s bedroom), which ended up on the preceding Tambourine EP and releases on Brooklyn labels Mexican Summer and Captured Tracks. Don’t miss your chance to see them at CMJ or along the tour!

“REVELATION! ..these are jams–check them out, and if you’re down, envelop yourself in the Little Girls explosion…” – The Fader

“If someone bottled up Joy Division’s essence, stored it for thirty years, and finally released it in 2009, it would sound something like this Toronto four-piece. And no, that’s not Mike Sniper (aka Blank Dogs) behind the mic.” – NYLON Band Crush: CMJ Edition

“Little Girls’ catchy brand of lo-fi guitar-pop is coming your way.” – Pitchfork

“…riding the dirty wave of ultra lo-fi yet extremely melodic/endlessly hummable noise-pop that seems to be building right now comes Toronto’s Little Girls.” – Gorilla vs Bear

“McIntyre’s atonal melodies and muddy vocals converge with clanging guitar chords and hypnotic, looped rhythms…Little Girls’ surges of pop genius suggest they won’t have to settle for worship from just the underground.” – Exclaim!

“I dig that gothy, garage-y sound…which you can hear for yourself [in] Little Girls.” – BrooklynVegan

PROMOTIONAL MP3: NEBULA – APHRODITE

“This is one of those records that makes you want to throw out every other record you’ve listened to, grow your hair to your elbows, and start all over again” – NME

“Nebula collapses a long lineage of heaviosity in its gravitational pull: Blue Cheer, the MC5, the Stooges, early Sabbath, mid-Seventies hard rock, sludge-era Black Flag, and mentors Mudhoney” – Revolver

Playing dirty rock and roll and primitive blues, psychedelic iconoclasts Nebula have earned a reputation as one of the most influential bands to emerge from the Los Angeles underground rock scene of the last two decades.

With a penchant for Fuzz-wah pedals, wild drums and debauchery, Nebula plays feedback-heavy, guitar-driven psychedelic rock in the tradition of The Stooges, MC5, Jimi Hendrix, and Cream– laced with the spaced out sounds and dischord of Spaceman 3 and The Velvet Underground.

Formed by frontman Eddie Glass out of the ashes of Fu Manchu upon the band’s split in 1997, Nebula toured relentlessly in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, playing alongside bands like Mudhoney, Iggy and the Stooges, Local H, The Hellacoptors and Queens of the Stone Age.

Nebula quickly gained a cult following in the burgeoning psych scene that was taking root in their hometown of Los Angeles and in music scenes abroad, paving the way for bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Black Angels, and Wolfmother. In 2009, Nebula joined Tee Pee Records for the release of their latest LP, Heavy Psych. The new line up includes Eddie Glass on guitar/vox, Tom Davies (bass/vox), and Rob Oswald on drums.

Combining the combustibility of the sun with the mysticism of the moon, Heavy Psych lives up to its name, no matter your preferred definition, and reaffirms Nebula’s reputation as one of rock’s brightest stars – in this galaxy or any other.

Neon Indian

An elusive new project from composer Alan Palomo. Neon Indian delivers equal parts synthetic nostalgia, Dreampop lullabies, and grinding guitar noise to create something eerier than the sum of its parts. Forged after a hazy winter gathering in Texas, this initial batch of tracks were the result of field recordings, record samples, a collection of bizarre synth sounds. Soliciting the visual acrobatics of Video artist Alicia Scardetta, this project is setting out to be a multimedia maelstrom. Orbiting around the themes of drug induced heartbreak, weary afternoons, and lost chances, this music provides a lush soundtrack to the deadbeat exploits of teenage ennui. Neon Indian’s bedroom ballads have already forged Psychic Chasms, the debut full-length. They’ve been compared to New Order, Future Bible Heroes, and most recently said to sound like a saw-wave cutting a Doobie Brother’s song in half. Expect much racket to be had from this fresh-faced crew.
