Georgia-based Christian-rock band Showbread have a new album, The Fear of God, coming out next Tuesday, August 12th on Tooth & Nail Records. If you are unfamiliar with anything Showbread, now may be the time to accustom yourself to their self-branded “raw-rock” style. Amid eclectic synthesized melodies, distorted guitars, and a mix of scream and clean vocals, Showbread prospers the most in their broad storyline-driven lyrics. Writing of religion, death, and zombies alike, Showbread never fails to deliver a unique take on their perception of the world.

They currently have three new tracks off of the album up on their myspace: “Nothing Matters Anymore”, “Vehement”, and “Lost Connection With the Head”.

In support of the new album, Showbread will embark on a nationwide tour beginning August 13th with Goodnight Caulfield and the Gallery. Keep checking back on their myspace for additional dates.

POP-SOUL NEWCOMER: PRISCILLA RENEA RELEASES CAPITOL DEBUT EP “HELLO MY APPLE” YouTube Breakout with Million-Plus Views; GIANT Magazine and Baby Phat Tie-In Announced

As a pop-music singer/songwriter whose styles unite like a teen’s iPod on shuffle, Priscilla Renea is a true product of the Internet Generation. Having already showcased her musical talents to over a million viewers from the comforts of home, she has been self-promoting her musical craft on YouTube for a little over a year. Since then, Priscilla’s songs have had over 1.6 million views, over 30,000 channel subscribers and scores of imitators. Now signed to Power/Capitol Records, fans can finally experience this YouTube-sensation beyond the webcam with the release of her debut EP Hello My Apple (released March 31).

A Navy kid who attended more than twenty schools in her adolescence, Priscilla gravitated to choirs and theater groups, winning her first musical theater competitions as a high-schooler, and dreaming of making it on Broadway. It wasn’t until her senior year of high school in Vero Beach, Florida that she discovered her natural talent for writing catchy, pop songs only after her father gave her a guitar for Christmas. Some teenage girls’s write in their diaries and lock them with a key; Priscilla poured her heart into songwriting and shared it with a social network of soon-to-be fans. Her debut EP Hello My Apple features three tracks that were among her most popular on YouTube: “I Fell in Love,” “Hello My Apple,” and “Cry.”

Cast on MTV’s Say What? Karaoke show, Priscilla’s page views spiked and her songs were being re-posted as covers by a growing fanbase. To further her musical growth beyond her bedroom, Priscilla joined the Atlanta-based production company Power Entertainment, where she honed songwriting for herself and for other artists, impressing collaborators with her knack for quickly harnessing inspiration into unforgettable songs.

Recognized as an emerging talent and one-to-watch on the pop music scene, among Priscilla’s first commercial partnerships is an advertorial campaign in Giant magazine and Kimora Lee Simmons’ trendsetting Baby Phat line of fashion, footwear and accessories themed as ‘The Road to Success’.

Priscilla Renea’s debut album, Jukebox, is schedule for release later this year with production by several in-house Power Entertainment talents, along with Brian Kidd (Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Nappy Roots) and Soulshock and Karlin (Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Keyshia Cole, JoJo).

JOSH REICHMANN ORACLE BAND COVERS DEERHUNTER’S “AGORAPHOBIA,” RELEASES DIGITAL-ONLY SHIVERING BLACK EP

Toronto artist Josh Reichmann Oracle Band (formerly of Frenchkiss post-punk band Tangiers) is offering his own spin on Deerhunter’s song “Agoraphobia” for free mp3 download. The song is available on Josh’s brand new digital-only Shivering Black EP, out this week on Paper Bag Records!

Download Josh Reichmann Oracle Band – “Agoraphobia” (Deerhunter Cover) here

SPIN called “Shivering Black,” “a synthesis of modern sounds and timeless, raw rock songwriting…a stomping, sparkling sci-fi popscape that hits you like a kiss from a starman you suspect is full of shit but still dig for his dance moves,” in their April ‘09 issue as their #1 “Song You Must Hear Now!” The Shivering Black EP also includes a remix by Paper Bag’s very own Jake Fairley, and a brand new song called “Our Whole Life.”

Josh Reichmann Oracle Band is busy readying the release of his Crazy Power LP, the followup to his acclaimed Life Is Legal EP. He now fronts a five-piece band incorporating soul, early funk, roots bass and dark punk influences, complete with a live dancer (formerly of the National Ballet), and they recently wrapped a US tour w/ Sebastian Grainger . Summer tour dates to follow.

If you’re interested in a 7″of “Shivering Black”/”Agorophobia” for giveaway, a ZIP of the digital-only EP or Josh’s forthcoming LP, please let me know!

“[Josh Reichmann] the charismatic frontman has produced an arty rock-psychedelic album so inherently bold and confident that it’s sensible for him to take credit for it. (And if he hadn’t done so ’70s-era Brian Eno may have.) – HEEB

“Josh Reichmann has shed his punky sides in favor of something a bit jazzier…a medley of bombastic horns, roots-rock bass and groovy vocals.” – CMJ

“He’s also handsome.” – The Fader

Hear Music presents the all new album from Elvis Costello, Secret, Profane & Sugarcane on June 2. Secret, Profane & Sugarcane features ten previously unreleased tracks produced by T Bone Burnett plus re-workings of Johnny Cash’s “Hidden Shame” & “Boom Chicka Boom” and Bing Crosby’s “Changing Partners.”

“Complicated Shadows” Audio Streams

The record was produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded by Mike Piersante during a three-day session at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio.

Joining Costello were Jerry Douglas (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin), Jeff Taylor (accordion) and Dennis Crouch (double bass), some of the most highly regarded recording artists and musicians in traditional American country music, Bluegrass and beyond.

Several of these songs, including “Down Among The Wines and Spirits”, were given their first public performances during Costello’s acclaimed solo appearances as part of “The Bob Dylan Show” in late 2007.

The album includes ten previously unrecorded songs. “Sulphur to Sugarcane” and “The Crooked Line”, were co-written with T Bone Burnett while, “I Felt The Chill” marks Costello’s second recorded songwriting collaboration with Loretta Lynn.

Costello revisits two songs from his catalogue in string band style. Both songs were originally written for Johnny Cash. “Hidden Shame” was indeed included on Cash’s album, “Boom Chicka Boom”.

The album title makes reference to “The Secret Songs”, Costello’s unfinished commission for the Royal Danish Opera about the life of Hans Christian Andersen.

Seeking a new connection from the author to the Anglophone world, Costello wrote about the Andersen’s relationship with the world famous singer, Jenny Lind in “She Handed Me A Mirror” and “How Deep Is The Red”.

“She Was No Good”, relates some of the chaotic details of Lind’s famous “All-American” concert tour of 1850, which was promoted by P.T. Barnum. In its aftermath, “Red Cotton” imagines Barnum reading an Abolishionist pamphlet, while manufacturing cheap souvenirs of the adventure.

These four episodes were newly adapted for the instrumentation of this record.

Indeed these are first Costello compositions to be predominantly rooted in acoustic music since his 1986 album, “King Of America”, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. He also produced the 1989 album, “Spike”.

T Bone adds his distinctive Kay electric guitar to several of numbers, the only amplified instrument on the recording.

Jim Lauderdale takes the close vocal harmony part throughout the record and Emmylou Harris contributed a third vocal part on the chorus of “The Crooked Line” on the final day of recording.

The record concludes with the waltz, “Changing Partners”, a song made famous by Bing Crosby.

The cover artwork of “Secret, Profane & Sugarcane” is an ink drawing by the renowned cartoonist, illustrator and author, Tony Millionaire.

Elvis Costello first recorded in Nashville with George Jones in 1979 and returned to the city for “Almost Blue”, his 1981 album of classic country covers.

He returned to the city in 2004 to record a duet rendition of “The Scarlet Tide” with Emmylou Harris.

This song, co-written with T Bone Burnett, received an Academy Award nomination for Alison Krauss’ rendition in the motion picture, “Cold Mountain” in 2003.

The 7” vinyl single, “Complicated Shadows” b/w “Dirty Rotten Shame” will be released on Independent Record Day, April 18th (CHECK)

Select US tour dates featuring musicians from the album — dubbed “The Sugarcanes” — will follow in June and August, 2009.

SECRET, PROFANE, & SUGARCANE TRACK LIST

Toronto’s Quest For Fire have signed with Tee Pee Records and will release their self titled debut on June 9th.

We are leaking the lead track Bison Eyes for your listening pleasure:
PROMOTIONAL MP3: BISON EYES – QUEST FOR FIRE

You would think that playing in bands for a decade, and touring constantly in shitty vans, might instill the desire to make your new project a lucrative one. This however, hasn’t crossed the minds of the four members of Toronto’s Quest For Fire. The sonic assault that these guys unleash onto unsuspecting listeners in a live setting, through their sometimes 10+ minute journeys is pure power. A contemporary take on classic rock and psychedelia.

The band, made up of Andrew Moszynski (guitar), Chad Ross (guitar, vocals), Mike Maxymuik (drums), and Josh Bauman (bass), spent a little over a year holed up in a tiny practice space near Toronto’s lakeshore, refining their vision and obsessing over their common love of all things strange.

Upon the inevitable demise of Canada’s most beloved garage rock underdogs, The Deadly Snakes (In the Red Records), of which Andrew and Chad were core members, Quest For Fire began to prepare for their great unveiling before Toronto’s wary rock scene. On a hot August night in 2007, the band made their first appearance at ‘The Boat’, one of Toronto’s most cherished dive bars located in Kensington Market. They quickly became the city’s most sought-after new band. Show offers came flooding in to open for acts such as Black Mountain, Ladyhawk, Mudhoney, Earthless, Howlin Rain, Witch……….. As their old bands burned out, QFF took off. The Deadly Snakes faded with time and Mike’s tenure with Canadian metal/hardcore heads Cursed came to an abrupt end. One year after the release of their debut album on Montreal’s Storyboard label, QFF is stoked to announce that they have been picked up by New York’s Tee Pee Records. Their self titled debut will now be available in the U.S./Europe in June of 2009.

Quest For Fire Tracklisting:
1. Bison Eyes
2. Strange Waves
3. Hawk That Hunts The Walking
4. I’ve Been Trying To Leave
5. You Are Always Loved
6. Next To The Fire

The band will hit the road in June in support of the record. Details will be announced soon.

UPCOMING RELEASES:
4/07: ASSEMBLE HEAD IN SUNBURST SOUND – WHEN SWEET SLEEP RETURNED
4/21: BLACK MATH HORSEMAN – WYLLT

THE LOW ANTHEM TO RELEASE NONESUCH RECORDS DEBUT OH MY GOD, CHARLIE DARWIN ON JUNE 9; East Coast tour dates include NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on June 15

Rhode Island-based trio The Low Anthem releases its Nonesuch Records debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, on June 9. The album, which had a limited but critically praised independent release late last year, has an updated track sequence and packaging, and has been remastered by Gateway’s Bob Ludwig. Rolling Stone says the music on Charlie Darwin feels “homemade” and “solemnly beautiful,” and NPR Music called the song “To Ohio” a “tender stunner” when choosing it as a Song of the Day, saying, “At times languid and haunting, but with detours into Tom Waits-esque stomping and hollering, The Low Anthem’s music seems equally informed by Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, The Band and a late-night ride home in Joni Mitchell’s car.”

In anticipation of the forthcoming release, The Low Anthem spends the rest of April making its way up the northeastern seaboard with Ray Lamontagne and Elvis Perkins before performing at this year’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. A headlining show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom in has just been added for Monday, June 15. Tickets are $13/$15 (day of show) and go on sale today. More shows will be announced soon.

The Low Anthem, which is signed to Bella Union in Europe, recently performed six sets at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, where the New York Times called them “stately” and said, “the Low Anthem harmonized on slow, sustained songs-often waltzes-using instruments like harmonium, clarinet, some kind of small euphonium and a set of metal discs played with a bow for eerie high tones, perfect accompaniment…with lyrics contemplating faith, loss, destruction and self-destruction in visionary imagery,” the BBC called them “stunning” and said, “Expect much flowerier words of praise thrown on this band in the future; they deserve everything said about them.” Mojo describe their set as “heartbreaking” and called the band, “truly startling songwriters and instrumentalists. Theirs is a gloriously romantic vision of America that sits somewhere between Dylan and Waits.”

The Low Anthem comprises Jocie Adams, Ben Knox Miller, and Jeff Prystowsky; Adams plays clarinet, Miller plays guitar and sings (and is the group’s principle songwriter), and Prystowsky plays bass, but they each play a handful of other instruments on Oh My God, Charlie Darwin and in live performances. The three met while studying at Brown University in Providence, RI, and have been playing together for nearly two years. (Before Adams joined the group, an earlier incarnation of The Low Anthem released What the Crow Brings in 2007.)

Oh My God, Charlie Darwin was co-produced by The Low Anthem and Jesse Lauter. The band, Lauter, and several good friends went to Block Island, RI, for ten cold days in January 2008. They brought recording equipment along on the ferry ride and made the album in an empty summer cabin. Among the 27 instruments on the record are zither, pump organ, Tibetan singing bowl, and an oil drum. The Low Anthem pays homage to two heroes with the record’s only cover, a one-take rendition of “Home I’ll Never Be,” with words by Jack Kerouac and music by Tom Waits.
