Georgia-based Christian-rock band Showbread have a new album, The Fear of God, coming out next Tuesday, August 12th on Tooth & Nail Records. If you are unfamiliar with anything Showbread, now may be the time to accustom yourself to their self-branded “raw-rock” style. Amid eclectic synthesized melodies, distorted guitars, and a mix of scream and clean vocals, Showbread prospers the most in their broad storyline-driven lyrics. Writing of religion, death, and zombies alike, Showbread never fails to deliver a unique take on their perception of the world.

They currently have three new tracks off of the album up on their myspace: “Nothing Matters Anymore”, “Vehement”, and “Lost Connection With the Head”.

In support of the new album, Showbread will embark on a nationwide tour beginning August 13th with Goodnight Caulfield and the Gallery. Keep checking back on their myspace for additional dates.

HEALTH goes disco? Not exactly, L.A.’s “beautiful noise” group announces release of HEALTH//DISCO remix collection, EU/UK tour dates. Pitchfork.tv debuts featuring the band’s rooftop set.

“HEALTH make extremely pleasant noise music.” — Vice Magazine

“It’s a challenging, loud vision of rock yes, but it’s not nearly as tough as it at first seems.” — 8/10, NME

L.A.’s beautiful-noise quartet HEALTH has set a May 13th, 2008 release date for HEALTH//DISCO, the companion to the band’s phenomenally popular self-titled debut on the Lovepump United label. And, while fans in the U.S. can enjoy the latest release, converts across the pond can see the group’s intense live show on its extensive EU/UK tour beginning April 30th (see complete dates below). Furthermore, just like Buggles ushered in the MTV nation with “Video Killed the Radio Star”, HEALTH’s eruptive 5-song NYC rooftop performance kicks off the newly launched Pitchfork.tv web-video station.

In addition to evoking grand hyperboles from every blog under the sun, HEALTH’s album inspired several other musicians to match the band’s creativity. They reimagined, recut and remixed, and the result is the 11-song HEALTH//DISCO. Featuring remixes from Crystal Castles, Acid Girls, CFCF, Pink Skull, Thrust Lab, Narctrax, and more, these tracks take HEALTH’s ethereal chanting, screeching noise, and gauzy atmosphere and forcefully apply them to the dance floor. The CD also contains an enhanced DISCO+ portion with even more remixes from Toxic Avenger, Nastique, Lovely Chords, Captain Ahab and others.

“This is not your typical remix album,” the band states in an open letter to fans. “Every artist on the record was hand selected and contacted by us with the hope of combining our sounds and musical ideas with those of electronic artists we admire, several of them doing remixes for the first time. It is not about market saturation or crossover appeal. It is purely about the music, and we are proud of it. This is an album, and meant to be listened to as one. The goal of this record is not only to present all these songs at once, but also to ensure that they are not forgotten in the constantly updating, content hungry internet music world.”

HEALTH’s much-ballyhooed March 2008 tour with Toronto electro-punk duo Crystal Castles has been an incredible success, spilling over to the band’s current U.S. dates seeing packed houses and tremendous reviews.

The spry noisemakers have set up a separate MySpace page from its regular band site for all of its myriad remix/collaboration projects. Check it out HERE. The impressive word-of-mouth excitement about HEALTH has quickly become an international phenomenon. In late summer 2007, the band ripped a swath across the U.K. — garnering praise from the NME, BBC radio and many more — and healed cynical souls all across the U.S. throughout that fall and into winter 2008. The band’s live shows are sweaty, packed fits of beautiful noise that could perhaps be best compared to Liars, Animal Collective and latter-period Black Dice.

HEALTH’s self-titled debut full length on the ultrahip Lovepump United label hit shelves on September 18th, 2007 while L.A. based Cold Sweat Records (Battles, Phantom Family Halo, This Moment in Black History) issued the vinyl version of the album in early December.

Instead of finding a room where the only thing one can hear is their heartbeat, HEALTH recorded its debut full length in one of the band’s favorite places. The Smell is an all ages music venue in downtown Los Angeles. It is open and brick and dirty and dark, but when you sing a church hymnal or hit a drum as hard as you can the sound is beautiful. They did both of these things on the record. They also went out and found equipment built the same time as The Smell, mostly ribbon microphones designed by the BBC for radio broadcasts in the 1930’s, things George Martin liked to use, and other things they didn’t know about. The record is 11 songs in less than thirty minutes – on it there is new music with old sounds.

HEALTH’s debut was nominated for the illustrious 2008 Plug Awards in the “Avant Album of the Year” category. Also, Pitchfork picked the video clip for “Heaven” off of the band’s self-titled debut for its Top 50 Videos of 2007 feature.

“This happy-go-lucky Don Juan 2008 sounds like the lovechild of Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell…” – Pensatos

“…so darn catchy… you’ll want to hear more.” – USA Today

In declaring UK-based singer-songwriter Freddie Stevenson a must see act at South By Southwest, Variety recently described him as “…a man who has found his place in a continuum with Paul Simon as a starting point…,” and continued by stating that he “may well be the first person to think of merging Buckley with the early works of John Martyn or Americanizing (through use of organ, certain chord progressions) Mike Scott and The Waterboys.” The trusted trade’s Phil Gallo went on to explain that “potential just oozes from this Scottish folk punk.”

Austin was a good time for Freddie and afterwards, the afro-headed songsmith quickly headed to Los Angeles for a performance at Hotel Café in addition to some special performances in various Hollywood backyards and living rooms owned by people we unfortunately can’t reveal. Freddie’s back in NYC this week to celebrate the upcoming release of his second album All My Strange Companions.

From the acoustic-punk sing-a-long opener of a single “Easy Now” — often referred to as “the JK Rowling song” — to the woeful, tender pining of “Alibi Song,” Freddie conjures melodic hooks from the most wondrous of places on his second album All My Strange Companions. The record’s sound spans from the intricate weaving of acoustic guitar and the languished lap steel in “The Soft Collapse” through to the vicious punk stylings of “Ordinary Girl.” Freddie will play a special show to celebrate the album’s release in New York City at Piano’s this Sunday, April 13th.

And Freddie never stops writing. In the days following a brief adventure involving a private show by the notorious rap duo Yo Majesty, Freddie revealed a new tune about the experience wittingly titled “Rolling With Virgil” (a reference to Dante’s Virgil-led journey through Hell). Freddie’s also currently working on music for a couple of films. First, “Love Is Gonna Take It’s Toll” for director Alonso Ruizpalacios’ latest short entitled Café Paraiso, and then a handful of songs for the short film Official Selection by Brian Crano, starring Rebecca Hall (The Prestige, Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Amanda Seyfried (Big Love, Mean Girls) and Freddie himself.

For those curious to dig into Freddie’s catalog, a US issue of Freddie’s debut album Body On The Line is currently being negotiated. Promo copies of the record are available to the media now. The record was named one of the BBC’s Best Albums of 2006 and features the track “If You Don’t Kiss Me”, the very song The Office co-creator Stephen Merchant called “the ultimate song to seduce women to.”

Freddie Stevenson Live:

April 13th New York, NY @ Piano’s – Album Release Party

April 17th Brooklyn, NY @ Soundfix w/ This Is Ivy League

CHECK OUT KATHLEEN EDWARDS' PLAYFUL NEW MUSIC VIDEO AND LETTERMAN PERFORMANCE (4.22)

KATHLEEN EDWARDS TEACHES DO-RE-ME WITH HUMOR IN MUSIC VIDEO FOR “THE CHEAPEST KEY”

PERFORMANCE ON THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN SET FOR 4.22

Kathleen Edwards’ latest album Asking for Flowers (Zoë/Rounder) is filled with “poignant…fierce” (Rolling Stone, 3.6.08) moments, but her music video for the single “The Cheapest Key” shows a “softer side” of her personality. The playful video directed by Lisa Mann depicts Edwards as a campy schoolteacher from hell.

She teaches her students a rocking songbook with help from booty-shaking back-up dancers and blatantly keeps a bottle of booze next to the apple on her desk. The satirical video pokes fun at many music video clichés and features Edwards doing her best prima ballerina impression in a tiara and tutu.

Check out Edwards’ music video: http://www.rounder.com/kathleenedwards/cheapest.html

The video debuts on GAC’s “Edge of Country” on 4.11 and tune in 4.22 when Edwards plays “The Cheapest Key” live on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS).

90s Brit-Pop meets 70s Punk Rock meets Y2K Williamsburg: We Were The States release debut album merging The Walkmen, Oasis, Dead Boys, Murder City Devils, et al.

“The building blocks of this spry full-length debut are dynamic left turns slathered in the Lower East Side guitar fuzz of Television by way of The Strokes. Opener “Up Your Sleeve” sets the scene with a badgering garage rock riff from The Sonics’ playbook that repeatedly burns itself down to the wick.” — Austin Chronicle

Murfreesboro, Tennessee might seem an unlikely birthplace for a band that merges a variety of cosmopolitan music styles into one exciting whole, but the debut of We Were The States proves that rock music still has a few compelling permutations available to a band that knows how to combine all the right elements. Believe The Thieves is such a dramatically effective debut, cleverly interweaving sounds reminiscent of late 70’s NY rock renaissance (Television, Dead Boys) with early 90’s Brit-Pop (Oasis, Blur) and contemporary urban indie rock (The Walkmen, The National).

The band has released the first video off its Chicken Ranch Records debut, for the infectious song “Up Your Sleeve”

The band as we know it today began in February of 2007 but its roots can be traced back to 2003. Jay Stoyanov and Justin Webb met at the restaurant they both worked at in Murfreesboro, TN. After a couple of years of writing and playing with several musicians, they finally found a solid line-up with the addition of Ben Moore on bass and Nick Devan on drums. They recorded and self released an EP. Nick later left to curate the National Knife Museum and was replaced by the outstanding Tyler Coppage. In 2007, they signed with Austin indie Chicken Ranch Records, changed their name and sound, and began work on their debut full length entitled Believe The Thieves.

The album was produced by Tennessee rock staple Brian Carter (The Features, Glossary, The Nobility). The album was recorded in two weeks but Brian and the brave men of WWTS spent several months tweaking every element to the desired sonic quality. What is left is a disfunctionaly glorious piece of sound.

We Were The States succinctly describe themselves thusly:

“We live off Bukowski, red wine and Italian food. Our stereos swell with the sounds of The Kinks, The Walkmen, Oasis, Dandy Warhols, and the like. We are men of passion. Some are college educated, some would rather stay out of it. It is no doubt that all are wise.”

Whichever way one might attempt to summarize We Were The States, it ought to be immediately apparent by the sound of its powerful debut that the band brings an inspired small-town Southern interpretation of influences more commonly associated with big city lore.

“Do you ever get a hankering for rambunctious rock with just a hint of class? Like the best punk band in the world wearing custom made tailored suits? Or maybe a gang brawl with those participating adorned in top hats and canes while snapping their fingers West Side Story style? Well if you’re like me, then the answer is a resounding “yes”. My latest fix for this niche is Tennessee’s We Were The States, whose bouncy garage rock style reminds me of the Hives, with a bit more southern spice, and by “bit” I mean a whole case of red pepper.” – Azltron

“Tennessee’s We Were The States have been together in their current format for slightly over 12 months, just long enough for them to carve out their own unique style. Their debut long player Believe The Thieves is a chaotic pot pourri of Nuggets style garage rock (‘Up Your Sleeve’) seen through a late 70’s CBGB’s prism (‘See If I Care’) with a dash of Zutons style pizzaz and a sprinkling of Radiohead circa Pablo Honey (‘Try’ and ‘Girl You’re Not A Thief.’) – The Devil Has The Best Tuna

Switches on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight and Announce Summer Tour Dates with Be Your Own Pet, She Wants Revenge and The Virgins

“In light of all the mild-mannered Coldplay knockoffs of the last few years, it’s easy to forget that British rockers used to be cocky young things, happy to bang out shout-along choruses filled with drug references. Switches remember; their debut LP sounds as if it were written with soccer stadiums in mind, complete with chirpy harmonies and hooks…” – BLENDER

Tune into Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight, April 10, to watch Switches perform “Drama Queen” off their recently released debut album “Lay Down the Law”. And if you just can’t wait to see a little bit of drama, check out their battle royale of a music video.

“Switches justify their cockiness with talent, excelling in the feisty hooks and high-pitched oo-oo-oos that hark back to the glam era at its best. If you’ve hoped for a missing link between T. Rex and the Killers (and hoped the balance would tilt toward the former), swaggering salvation is at hand.” – Entertainment Weekly, A-

“Tunes like “Drama Queen” and “Lay Down the Law” have enough hooks and sleaze-rock muscle to deserve to find their way to mainstream American rock radio.” – Boston Herald

“Combining foot-stomping drums and bass with tight vocals and sharp guitar riffs, Switches are as cocksure as their pop peers.”- Spin

Switches are lighting up the American music scene and we just can’t get enough of their Switches’ swagger, so due to popular demand the lads are back touring stateside this May and June as part of the Nylon Summer Music Tour with Be Your Own Pet, She Wants Revenge and The Virgins, so don’t miss out on the tour everyone will talking about this summer.

“Focusing on material from their upcoming debut album, there’s one thing Switches proved for sure on Saturday night: their music is entirely and utterly danceable—even the frat boys were movin’. Switches make highly-refined rock music—rock music that makes good use of a thumping disco rhythm section. Their music mobilizes people, and in the end listeners are left with no other choice but to bite their lips, get up and dance!” – Filter

“Switches…dedicated their suddenly ubiquitous…”Drama Queen” to the many loony ladies of La-La Land that allegedly inspired it. And the ladies (and gentlemen) in attendance reacted in a suitably loony manner” – NME

“[Switches] brightest spot came with “Lay Down the Law,” the namesake single to their soon to be released album, which seemed to amplify the energy of the crowd, measured in tween scream decibels.” – BlackBook

The Young Punx - Your Music Is Killing Me! Out Today (Ultra Records)

The Young Punx – Your Music Is Killing Me! Out Today (Ultra Records)

“For those who enjoy a diverse palette of tunes, The Young Punx are the way to go…” – Alternative Press

7 random things you should know about The Young Punx…

1.Driven mad by the tide of mind-rotting celebrity trivia engulfing the global mass media, The Young Punx ended up spending a day making this home-made no-budget Mylo-inspired rant. See and share “Destroy Celebrity Crap” here

2.For those who love the BBC America TV show “The Mighty Boosh,” watch for an appearance in the Punx video for “Rockall” by series regular Michael Fielding (who plays Naboo on “Boosh”).

3.The Young Punx’ album “Your Music Is Killing Me” contains no audio samples of music despite sounding like most of the tracks are sample-based. To produce their trademark mashed-up sound the band painstakingly record many different pieces of retro music big bands, orchestras, 80s pop, surf rock, heavy metal etc, all in historically authentic ways, then ‘sample themselves’. They are always getting asked “I can’t work out what the samples are you used in ‘Fire’ and ‘Drum and Bacharach’”. There are no music samples. That said, the re-edited “Shipping Forecast” vocal on the track “Rockall” IS a genuine BBC shipping forecast, read and endorsed by Radio 4 announcer Alan Smith!

4.Hal Ritson of The Young Punx has performed, written or produced behind the scenes on over 150 dance records in the past 4 years, including playing keyboards on Eric Prydz’s “Call On Me”, singing the “Jimmy Somerville” lead vocals on Supermode’s “Tell Me Why” and co-writing 2 tracks on David Guetta’s platinum selling “Poplife” album.

5.As a teenager, Cameron from The Young Punx had a Top 20 hit with club classic “I Know” by “New Atlantic”. The vocalist, Candy Staton, was not able to perform live with them on Top Of The Pops, so her part was sung live by “some bird the A&R man knew” a performance so appalling The Sun named it the worst in the show’s history, and launched a “campaign to find New Atlantic a new singer”.

6.The Young Punx have developed an artistic partnership with cult Dutch digital artist Han Hoogerbrugge in which Hoogerbrugge has developed the visual identity for the band, record artwork and several renowned animated videos. Built on a darkly comic cast of surreal hand drawn characters, later animated in flash and 3-D animated packages, Hoogerbrugge’s distinctive creations act both as the main public identity for the band, and as an exhibited part of Hoogerbrugge’s own portfolio.

7.Both Cameron and Hal studied at King’s College Cambridge. They usually keep this quiet on account of it not sounding very ‘dance’. But in fact it is a positive hotbed of club talent with leading artists such as Freeform Five and Will Saul also having studied there…

There is epic music and there is epic music. Chicago instrumental quartet Pelican is proudly guilty of producing the latter, penning tunes so ambitious and triumphant that your everyday life seems insignificant in comparison. – XLR8R

VICE RECORDS SIGNS KING KHAN AND THE SHRINES

12-PIECE PSYCHEDELIC SOUL BIG BAND EXPLODES THEIR MUSICAL DYNAMITE ALL OVER THE WORLD 6/17/08
VICE Records is proud to announce the signing of the 12-piece psychedelic soul big band explosion King Khan and The Shrines, and the release of The Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines on June 17. Nothing will get you ready for sunburn season quicker than a blast of this garage soul inferno, equal parts Lenny Kaye-era Nuggets, James Brown soul revue and Sun Ra freak session. Sexual voodoo, secret societies and hallucinogenic transcendence all conspire over rampant garage-psych riffs and Muscle Shoals horns with the blue-eyed tear drops and desperate wail of King Khan testifying like a true motherfucker.

Joining King Khan and the Shrines line-up includes 60 year old Chicagoan Ron Streeter (live-percussionist for Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and many other Soul legends), and a horn section consisting of Simon Wojan (the mastermind behind Kranky Records recording artists Cloudland Canyon), Ben Ra (Germany’s John Coltrane), and famous French rockabilly saxophonist Big Fred Rollercoaster. The rhythm section of the Sensational Shrines has been called “a German/French version of the Freak Brothers”.

Originally sighted in Montreal’s Spaceshits, and sometimes appearing as the semi-naked half of the King Khan & BBQ Show, King Khan moved to Berlin in 1999 where he and the Shrines have been spreading their love like peanut butter through a flurry of full-lengths, EPs, singles, and hard-to-find vinyl releases. Their first album THREE HAIRS & YOU’RE MINE was produced by Liam Watson at the legendary Toe Rag Studios in London and released in 2002. A second full-length, MR. SUPERNATURAL, followed in 2004. Their third full-length WHAT IS?! received critical acclaim all over the world and landed at #33 in Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2007. In between have been French-only releases, a split with the Dirtbombs, 7″s, 10″s, and more. The Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines collects the cream of this very creamy crop and present the greatest hits of his greatest hits, all available for the first time ever in America.

Look for the first-ever King Khan and The Shrines US tour this July and August. Dates to come.

LINER NOTES by Jared Swilley of The Black Lips:
The first time I crossed paths with King Khan and the Shrines was on a cold foggy day in London. The gloomy weather was fitting as I’d lost my passport, money, and most of my personal effects at the previous night’s concert. My spirits were down and I was in desperate need of salvation. As I sat wallowing in sorrow outside of the club I suddenly felt a supernatural calling that drew me in like a rat following the Pied Piper. What followed was to this day one of the best shows I have ever witnessed. The scene inside was nothing short of insanity. Horns were blaring that could have taken down the walls of Jericho, the drums pounding a rhythm deep into my heart, guitars, bass and organ wailing and King Khan at the epicenter of it all commanding the stage like a soul-soaked shaman. I was spellbound, moved, shaken, stirred and cured – not unlike what I hear religious experiences are like. I left the show a saved and converted man. I had experienced Supreme Genius.
