B. Dolan featuring Toki Wright, Jasiri X, Buddy Peace, Sage Francis – Film The Police video

B. DOLAN’s “FILM THE POLICE” pays tribute to N.W.A.’s infamous “F*ck the Police,” serving as a call to action for the digitized media movement while responding to the recent explosion of police brutality all across the world.

This free MP3, courtesy of STRANGE FAMOUS RECORDS, features a reconstruction of Dr. Dre’s original beat, brilliantly reanimated by UK producer BUDDY PEACE. Label CEO, SAGE FRANCIS, opens the song by picking up the gavel where Dr. Dre left it 23 years ago, introducing a blistering, true-to-style flip of Ice Cube’s original verse by SFR cornerstone, B. Dolan. TOKI WRIGHT (Rhymesayers Entertainment) follows up by stepping into the shoes of MC Ren, penning the people’s struggle against cops as a case of “Goliath Vs. a bigger giant.” Finally, Jasiri X (Pittsburgh rapper/activist) rounds out the track by filling in for Eazy-E, reminding us that police brutality disproportionately affects poor people of color.

With the Occupy Movement bringing various forms of injustice to the forefront of people’s consciousness, “Film the Police” is a reminder that cops have been a continued and increasingly militarized presence in public streets. Thanks to the widespread use of smartphones and video cameras, along with the popularity of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, the power of the media has been put back into the people’s hands as they document the injustices perpetrated by those who have sworn to serve and protect them.

I Break Horses

Allow us to introduce you to the beguiling world of I BREAK HORSES, the nom de plume of Maria Lindén and her musical partner Fredrik Balck. Residing in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, the duo have been meticulously crafting the nine incredible tracks that make up debut album Hearts throughout stolen moments gathered up over the past two years.

The task of capturing the sonic density of Lindén’s compositions was painstaking, while Balck’s lyrics, constantly teasing the senses, are at times insular and cold to the touch. It’s only when interpreted by Maria’s gorgeous vocals that a warmth is added, like the first rays of sun on a winters morning.

Although heavily (and openly) influenced by My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Jesus & Mary Chain et al – Hearts is far from an exercise in typical shoegaze fayre. Maria, waif-like and unassuming in person, is transformed on record to sound 10 feet tall. And, perhaps where certain contemporaries would hypnotize the listener into their world by sheer volume alone, I Break Horses lock firmly onto the very thing that makes each and every one of us ‘tick’: our pulse. Our Hearts. The common thread that links the nine songs together; always present, always beating – the album’s strength and presence guided entirely by it.

Coupled with with Lindén’s vocal, a seductive Scandinavian croon that’s bathed in an ocean of reverb and tremelo, Hearts is quite the sonic experience. It can’t be defined via a few meagre adjectives or genre classifications; you have to live it, live inside it. It will soak you up, embrace you and give back what you put in… Welcome to the most bewitching debut of the year.

Heavy hitting rockers Adelitas Way are ready to unleash a brand new head-banging single, “The Collapse” marking the second from Home School Valedictorian, which Fight! magazine calls an “explosive, adrenaline-induced full-length… packed with attitude.” “The Collapse” was shot live on the Carnival of Madness Tour & features cameos from members of Theory of a Deadman and Alter Bridge. It kicks-off the band’s sophomore effort.

“The Collapse” follows current single “Sick” which during its 27 weeks on the charts, rose to No. 1 at Active Rock and has over a million hits on YouTube, thanks to the group’s huge fan-base, which continues to grow due to “incredible songwriting, and an amazing work ethic,” as Hails and Horns magazine raved in a recent feature on the band. Front man Rick DeJesus credits his band’s success to the fans, “It’s all because of the people who listen to us. We’ll never forget that,” he says.

The band recently wrapped a string of dates on the Carnival of Madness tour alongside Alterbridge, Theory of A Deadman, Black Stone Cherry and Emphatic, and is set to get back on the road this fall. Catch them at the below dates in support of Home School Valedictorian.

Brooklyn-based We Are Augustines are excited to announce the release of their brand new music video. Directed by Matt Amato, the music video for “Book Of James,” the band’s new single, stars young actor Brady Corbet and was filmed this summer in and around the boroughs of New York City. Taken from the band’s debut album, Rise Ye Sunken Ships, “Book Of James,” a track produced by Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene), is singer Billy McCarthy’s gripping eulogy for his deceased brother James, a once-resilient spirit who succumbed to the pressures bearing down on him. Check out the music video below.

WATCH: WE ARE AUGUSTINES – “BOOK OF JAMES”

Out now in physical and digital formats, Rise Ye Sunken Ships (Atlantic/WEA Distribution) landed in the Top 10 of SoundScan’s New Artists chart on the strength of its first week of digital sales. The album’s August 23 release was recently succeeded by a September headline tour, a trek that saw the band visiting major markets across the country including Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles and many others. The band is scheduled to make several appearances next week during the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City from October 19-21 and will be supporting Glasvegas on their upcoming UK headline tour from October 24-31.

“Rise Ye Sunken Ships not only drips with emotion but it’s comprised of 12 deeply-layered, life-affirming compositions, and is a top-to-bottom excellent recording.” – MAGNET

“McCarthy’s story is relevant because it is precisely what makes him so powerful. Rather than wallow in the past, the band casts for redemption, treating each confessional track like a lesson in perseverance.” – THE WASHINGTON POST

The band was formed by ex-Pela members Billy McCarthy and Eric Sanderson, and includes Rob Allen on drums. Much of the material on Rise Ye Sunken Ships documents the most traumatic period of lead vocalist/guitarist McCarthy’s life in which he lost both his schizophrenic mother and his brother, James, to suicide. “Headlong Into The Abyss” recounts James’ flight from the police while “The Instrumental,” a transcendent, richly textured piece written by bassist/keyboardist Sanderson, closes out the album on a note of hope, suggesting that struggle can ultimately point the way to peace. As a whole, Rise Ye Sunken Ships represents the culmination of many years of personal struggle and eventual triumph in the completion of a shimmering album that had been floundering about for some time.

We Are Augustines will be making the following appearances in October at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City and in the UK supporting Glasvegas. Tour dates below.

“Bearing a confidence and delicacy recalling Liz Phair, Mary Timony, and especially Frente’s Angie Hart, Merilahti’s girlish growl nestles within the gray tones of post-shoegaze 1990s rock.”

“The secret of The Dø’s success is there’s a musical dexterity and ability which makes them stand out from the crowd.”
—DROWNED IN SOUND

“Sounding like The Cardigans with a dash of Feist’s world beat, the group encapsulates a variety of musical styles, resulting in a unique blend.”
—BLOGCRITICS

“In any language this would be considered engaging pop.”
—UNDER THE RADAR MAGAZINE

French-Finnish band The Dø conjure up an unlikely blend of indie rock, folk, dance, and mid-20th century pop. Taste-making website Pitchfork proclaimed their debut album A Mouthful “as ambitious and fun as any coming out party in recent memory.” MTV Iggy said, “Overall the album is a solid first effort, so have A Mouthful of The Do’s musical scale. You wont be disappointed.” Their hotly anticipated second album, Both Ways Open Jaws will be released via Six Degrees Records on November 15, 2011 and is already receiving rave reviews. A video has already been released for the first single, “Slippery Slope” and the song is available for free download. Hot website One Thirty BPM had this to say about the band and new album, “The Dø doesn’t really sound like anything else going on right now, but is just the next step in the evolution of fantastic musical art. Both Ways Open Jaws will strike you as both new sounding and classic, as both fresh and rooted in tradition. Most importantly, it will strike you as a treasure, and probably, as the best album you have heard in a long time.” “What brings the both together is their mutual love and talent for scoring films as well as their respective dabblings in rock, jazz and electronica. Their sustainable collaboration has carried itself over to a promising sophomore album Both Ways Open Jaws,” says Mezzic.com.

Singer Olivia Merilahti and instrumentalist Dan Levy first met in 2005 while recording the soundtrack to a French movie. After realizing their mutual love of music, the duo began to collaborate, and released A Mouthful in 2008 to critical acclaim. After touring the world on the success of the release, the duo spent the past year holed up in their recording studio in the Paris suburbs to create their next effort. Says Dan, “After the tour, we were frustrated by the technical restraints of performing live. So we came back to the studio with the idea of doing whatever we wanted.”

This mindset is immediately evident on Both Ways Open Jaws. The album reinvents itself at every turn, refusing to be confined by any one genre. Self-produced, the album includes sax, piano, harpsichord and trumpet just to name a few of the instruments played by multi-instrumentalist Dan. It is both technically accomplished and yet still manages to keep a lightness about it, which is largely in part to Olivia’s airy, shimmering vocals which veer from the primal to the tirelessly catchy.

As rich and appealing as their songs are, it’s the duo’s restless creativity and refusal to do the expected that make The Dø’s most recent effort, Both Ways Open Jaws, an album that will impress critics and fans alike.

“There is the symbolism of the ringing church bells and there are the aching hearts weaving through the songs on “Sympathy,” and yet, with most of the subtlety and the calm demeanor, you get a sense that nothing’s going to make this pain go away. Nothing’s going to make any of this better. There have been lies spoken. People have been misled into thinking that the empty feeling can be overcome. It’s simply not true. It can only be prettied up. “ – Daytrotter

“The album’s most uptempo track, “Four Days Straight,” suggests that when the grieving’s done, Eisland and his bandmates are capable of uncorking a few Modest Mouse-like indie rock anthems.” – Metromix

“On such cuts as the gentle, ukulele-driven title track and the guttingly melancholy acoustic ballad “Where You Came From” Eiesland still seems enamored with the solo, bedroom recording approach and in that sense brings to mind the work of the late Elliott Smith.” – Allmusic

With their second national tour approaching this year, opening for South Africa’s stars The Parlotones, the Chicago quintet Scattered Trees’ Daytrotter Session show their skilled, multi-layered heartfelt songs HERE. Scattered Trees will play New York’s CMJ with multiple showcases, including the Baeble Music showcase (full CMJ schedule tbc).

Earlier last month, the band premiered their latest video for “Sympathy” with MTV Hive. Directed by Scattered Trees’ guitarist/keyboardist J.M. Harper, “Sympathy” is a stark, poignant exploration of love, loss, and redemption — themes the band touches upon in their recently released full-length record. Praising the video, MTV Hive’s Jason Newman wrote, “The clip is a mini-movie that looks like a deleted scene from Werner Herzog’s soldier-gone-mad epic “Aguirre: The Wrath of God” … it feels more like an artsy, methodical short film than the budget-conscious, lo-fi approach employed by many indie bands.”

The band released Sympathy via Roll Call Records in 2011. The album is a stunning and ingenious collection of songs that reach for great emotional heights. It’s a rare, cathartic record that’s as heartfelt as it is therapeutic.

It’s been a whirlwind year for Scattered Trees. A little over a year ago, Scattered Trees was effectively broken up, with members of the band literally scattered all across the country. Then, lead singer Nate Eiseland’s father passed away, and as a tribute to his late father, Nate penned a series of songs on his acoustic guitar. With those acoustic songs in hand, the band came back together in Chicago and fleshed out the tracks, writing the songs that would become Sympathy. That album and the deeply powerful live show have been praised by Nylon, RCRD LBL, No Depression, Consequence of Sound, Buzzine and others as an album that’s not to be missed.

Holy Ghost! spent the better part of 2010 on the road with the likes of LCD Soundsystem and Chromeo. In 2011, they shifted into high gear, with the release of their eponymous debut LP in April on DFA Records, thrilling the longtime fans of their ubiquitous singles and remixes. Album tracks like “Do It Again”, “Wait & See”, and most recently “Some Children” (feat. Michael McDonald) have been mainstays on the blogosphere and probably every party you went to over the last 6 months.

Now Holy Ghost! are releasing their latest single, crowd favorite “Hold My Breath” co-written with Austrian DJ buddy Wolfram. Out October 17, the single EP will feature remixes from Tiger & Woods, Cosmic Kids & Falty DL. There is also an accompanying music video, which falls in line with their ever-growing catalogue of stellar videos. Collaborating again with director and close friend Ben Fries (read Pitchfork’s Director’s Cut of “Wait & See”) this latest video is a funny and sentimental look into the personal lives of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel.

After opening for the aforementioned Chromeo and LCD Soundystem tours last year and also supporting Cut Copy this spring, the band are now heading out on their first ever headline tour in the US. They are being joined on the road by Jessica 6, Midnight Magic and Eli Escobar on various dates, and everything kicks off right before Halloween with an already sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom.

Seven-Song Mini-Album Features Tracks From Electronic Dark-Pop Act’s
Two Buzzed-About U.K. Ep’s

Already a buzzed-about name in their native U.K., London-based synth-noir pop trio The Good Natured will make its debut Stateside with the release of an exclusive seven-song mini-album, Skeleton, on October 25th, 2011, on Astralwerks. The collection features three tracks from The Good Natured’s 2010 EP Be My Animal (“Be My Animal,” “Prisoner,” and “Your Body Is A Machine”) and three tracks from 2011′s Skeleton EP (“Skeleton,” “Wolves,” and “The Hourglass”), plus a bonus remix of “Skeleton” by London production duo NFIFTYFIVE.

Early supporters at The Boston Phoenix describe The Good Natured in their upcoming review of Skeleton as, “… 20-year-old ingénue prodigy Sarah McIntosh, equipped with Horrors hair, a distaste for pantalones, a Siouxsie Sioux obsession, her brother on guitar, and a treasure trove of sexually charged and goth-leaning electronic-pop gems.”

The review continues on to note that McIntosh is one to watch calling her “…cute as a button, but her songs, all singles-worthy, are viciously polished and self-aware. From the cold no-wave throb of “Your Body Is a Machine” …to the mystical wind-chime synth torrent of “Be My Animal,” McIntosh is already crashing the dance floors of nightclubs she can’t yet legally enter. This could be the emergence of the next great new-pop diva.”

Frontwoman Sarah McIntosh taught herself to play keyboards as a teenager after salvaging an old Yamaha synth from her grandmother’s house. Inspired by her parents’ Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, and Tears for Fears albums, McIntosh recruited her guitarist brother Hamish McIntosh, and a friend, drummer George Hinton, to launch The Good Natured.

The band honed its Gothic-tinged electronic pop smarts on three self-produced early releases, 2008′s Warriors, 2009′s Your Body Is A Machine, and 2010′s Be My Animal, which attracted the interest of Swedish producer Patrik Berger (Robyn). Berger invited McIntosh to Sweden to record and the results led to The Good Natured signing with Regal/Parlophone in the UK.

The first release for the label was the Skeleton EP, which took its inspiration from escapism, desire and emotions laid bare. “The song ‘Skeleton’ was inspired by an emotional vulnerability,” Sarah says. “It’s about being in a relationship where you feel quite stripped down because someone knows you so well. ‘Hourglass’ is about a relationship that’s about to end, and uses the hourglass as a metaphor. ‘Wolves’ is about escaping daily routines and entering a fantasy world. The wolves aren’t necessarily literal, they’re more metaphors for the things people do to escape everyday life.”

“There are so many talented songwriters out there at the moment,” Sarah continues. “It’s amazing to be able to release our music in a landscape like this. We hope to bring a darker sensibility to pop with our music.”

In the U.S., The Good Natured has electrified crowds with their energetic performances at SXSW and been featured on such tastemaker blogs as AOL’s Spinner and Arjan Writes. Here’s what critics have been saying:

“A compelling new talent” – The Sunday Times
“A talented and passionate force to be reckoned with”- The Fly
“Swirling, exciting synth pop” – The Times (London)
“An exciting prospect indeed” – Artrocker
“This is how pop should be done” – Time Out (London)
