Rhymesayers has announced the signing and release of Hail Mary Mallon’s debut record, Are You Gonna Eat That? for digital release on May 3rd, 2011 and physical CD and double colored, etched vinyl on June 7th 2011. The trio comprised of Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz will premiere tracks from the upcoming record this April and May while on tour with Kimya Dawson.

After years of touring together and collaborating in the studio, Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz joined forces to create their new group, Hail Mary Mallon. The groups name pays homage to Mary Mallon aka Typhoid Mary, the first person in US identified as a carrier of the pathogen associated with typhoid fever. The trio plans to spread their infectious blend of powerful production and back-forth rhyme schemes all over the world.

The 12-track album’s production is as detailed as the raw lyrics both Aesop and Rob spit. Thick, underlying bass keeps a strong backbone to the breaking drums and high-distorted guitar that comes and goes as songs climax. The ultimate compliment is DJ Big Wiz’s scratching ability that pops through while Aesop and Rob pass verses with ease. Their first single, Smock, adds synthesizers and ambient tones that subtlety rest atop the dark beat while Breakdance Beach keeps focus on the tight kickdrum and distorted handclaps. The contrast of production-heavy tracks with punching lines and stripped down bangers with light-hearted hooks allow the album to never lose your attention.

Hail Mary Mallon’s first video, Smock, features Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic performing the song live while driving around San Francisco. Look for cameo appearances from DJ Big Wiz, Kimya Dawson, and artist/illustrator Alex Pardee. Alexander Tarrant and Justin Metros directed the video.

Indie-rap surrealist Aesop Rock has announced tour dates with Olympia based singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson. “A Night with Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson” will feature a solo acoustic set by Kimya Dawson and a full set from Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz, who will perform both Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic solo material as well as new music. Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson are currently collaborating and will also join each other on stage to perform their new material throughout the night.

Aesop and Kimya’s first performance together was a free in store at artist Alex Pardee’s Zero Friends pop up shop in Los Angeles January 29, 2011. Their second show was a February 25, 2011- a sold out Noise Pop show at Great American Music Hall. Artists Jeremy Fish and Alex Paree designed the stage, assembling two 15ft walls of hand painted boxes. The artists, along with Aesop, Kimya, Rob and Wiz, threw all of the boxes to the fans at the end of the show.

Aesop’s first post describes the concept:

“In an effort to supply a sandbox for what I hope proves to be a multifarious and growing mix of contributors, I, with the help of Alex Tarrant and Justin Metros, have created 900bats.com. Original writing, photography, artwork, audio, and video content from varying sources will be posted regularly.”

The site was named for the 900 bats that were killed by renovation workers at Bala Fort in Alwar district who put them on fire to avoid disruption in work. Read the story here

Aesop Rock is giving fans an early holiday present today with a new free track called “Tomorrow Morning” and a bundle of extras available on DefinitiveJux.net. The free Ghosts of the Barbary Coast download pack includes the new song, an instrumental version, lyrics, and a Quicktime slideshow of artwork by Jeremy Fish, the artist who illustrated Aesop’s last full-length, None Shall Pass.

“Tomorrow Morning” and the accompanying extras were first given away at a Jeremy Fish art opening in San Francisco attended by more than 2,000 fans of the Bay area artist. All who attended received a USB keychain pre-loaded with the new Aesop Rock track and the Ghosts of the Barbary Coast project. Now Aesop’s made it possible for fans nationwide to download the bundle straight to their desktops.
