MP3: Del the Funky Homosapien – “Straight From The Big Bad West Coast”

The Funkman Bolsters His Stimulus Package With A Best Coast Funk History Lesson.

Critical Praise for Del:
“…Del’s reputation has remained strong in both fan and critic circles.” – Thrasher Magazine

“The Homosapien is one hell of an entertaining MC” – YRB

The Song:

While Del the Funky Homosapien’s new album – the entirely free, 13-track Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) – tackles a stack of current events and problems, one track in particular serves as the classic “back-in-the-day” shout out. That track is “Straight from the Big Bad West Coast,” the perfect blend of Del’s unique rhymes and quintessential comedic style, “I just peeped some ni##as think they can sh!t on a beat / By the most popular producer “Al Circa” / When you unearth that worthless waste / Take that Auto-Tune off, leave the gimmicks at home / You ain’t foolin’ nobody dumb ni##a, it’s on!”

Del optimistically refers to “Straight from the Big Bad West Coast” as his favorite track on the album: “It’s got that west coast vibe. I came from that angle, but I also hit people up with some history, how we on the west coast started these trends. It came from us. People used to think Cali was about white boys, surfers, palm trees, beaches but they didn’t know there were straight killers out here, bomb chronic, and more. It was almost like we shouldn’t be rapping in the first place.” Del, however, has been rapping from day one, and this track and the rest of The Funk Man only further assert him as a hip-hop veteran..

The Background:

Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) marks Del the Funky Homosapien’s 14th project of a hip-hop career that spans almost two decades. Starting at the tender age of 17 as protégé to his cousin, Ice Cube, Del quickly rose to the top of the underground hip hop scene with his albums, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need for Alarm (1993), both released through Elektra Records. Soon after parting ways with the label, Del helped found the Hieroglyphics family, comprised of notable emcees Pep Love, the Souls of Mischief, Casual, and Domino. In 1998 the critically acclaimed album 3rd Eye Vision was the first to be released under the Hieroglyphics Imperium label and since then Del has had consistent success with his solo and joint efforts, including Deltron 3030 (2000), Gorillaz (2001), Full Circle (2003), and Eleventh Hour (2008) to name a few. Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) features more of Del’s signature style, as this high-energy album is comprised of raw lyrics, driving rhythms, and Del’s undeniable funkiness. Released via Funnyman Entertainment on April 7th, Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) is available for free via http://delthefunkyhomosapien.bandcamp.com/.

Critical Praise for Del:
“…Del’s reputation has remained strong in both fan and critic circles.” – Thrasher Magazine

“The Homosapien is one hell of an entertaining MC” – YRB

The Song:

Del the Funky Homosapien may have a name that is recognized by millions but he isn’t immune to the problems the rest of us face. When it comes down to it, he is just like every other American; he too, feels the effects of the recession. In light of our shared economic plight, Sir Diesel has prepared for us a free, 13-point stimulus package in the form of his new album Funk Man. The opening track kicks off his plan to turn our problems around with an aggressive funk-charged bass line and an even more aggressive demand to “Get It Right Now!,” meaning to handle whatever it is you need to do to keep thriving and stay in control of your life. The hard-hitting funk of his self-produced joint literally hammers his message into your brain by way of your ears, and gives anyone the motivation to take charge of their own affairs and get theirs. Del explains his seemingly effortless creative process behind making the song:

“With this song I wanted to make something I could perform and create myself, you know, something I could do all on my own. There was nothing hard about it, actually. I wrote out the rap, the music, the beat, the whole thing, and got it recorded in like three hours. My favorite part of making this song, just like with all my other songs, was the whole composition of it.”

“The chorus pretty much says it all, but if there’s one main message, it’s that life is short, and what you want to do you need to do now; don’t procrastinate. If anything is standing in my way I can’t let it stop me, I need to get it right now!”

Speaking of procrastination, why not download Del’s new album NOW. It’s free. It’s simple. The wait for the Eleventh Hour was 6 years. Del came back in one year with Funkman, and it’s completely free. There is absolutely no excuse not to do it. Get it right now.

The Video:

Del the Funky Homosapien is dropping some major knowledge in his recent video “Get It Right Now,” in which he encourages all to cease the procrastination. Whatever plans you have in the making, it’s time to move on them and Del provides the perfect musical backdrop to get you motivated. Over an urgent yet stripped down beat and the background of Del’s actual home and lab, his funky vocal stylings ask “Why wait, why debate?” With direction by longtime Hieroglyphics collaborator Grant James, “Get it Right Now” is the logical choice for the first single of Del’s new free album Funk Man (The Stimulus Package). The song’s critical message of progression speaks not only to the music industry, but to Del’s longtime fans as well. How else would Del have made it this long in the game without moving forward with his vision?

Speaking of procrastination, why not download Del’s new album NOW. It’s free. It’s simple. The wait for the Eleventh Hour was 6 years. Del came back in one year with Funkman, and it’s completely free. There is absolutely no excuse not to do it. Get it right now.

Hip Hop Heavyweight, Del the Funky Homosapien, Releases Free Album: Funk Man: The Stimulus Package Del Embarks On National Tour To Promote Release; Album & Tour Sponsored by Arnette, Skull Candy, Osiris, and Bandcamp.com

Critical Praise for Del:
“…Del’s reputation has remained strong in both fan and critic circles.” – Thrasher Magazine

“The Homosapien is one hell of an entertaining MC” – YRB

Less than a year after the release of his last album, Hieroglyphics member and co-founder Del the Funky Homosapien joins the ranks of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails with the free release of his new album, Funk Man: The Stimulus Package via Funnyman Entertainment. Del is currently on a nationwide promotional tour for the album and will be playing in over 30 cities.

As an early adapter of technology and having the status and perspective only a veteran can possess, Del takes advantage of his unique position to adopt a still experimental distribution strategy with Funk Man’s release. Even with longevity, very few artists can hope to successfully launch a free full-length album. However with Del the Funky Homosapien’s solid fan base and sponsorship deals with Arnette, Skull Candy, Osiris Shoes, and Bandcamp.com, Funk Man’s release not only ensures support for the creative process, but also gives fans easy access to music they crave.

With a six year hiatus between Del’s prior two solo releases, fans and critics may be surprised by the release of Funk Man: The Stimulus Package, which is out only a year following Eleventh Hour (Def Jux/Hieroglyphics). Del attributes this timing as a reflection of his life. Having shed the negativity that plagued him in past years, he feels a sense of renewal, which has resulted in newfound creativity. Additionally, after working consistently with record labels in his previous projects, Del is reenergized by his ability to produce music independently.

Being without a record label shouldn’t be cause for alarm because Del, known for his intricate, honest, and humorous word-play, funky beats and artistic versatility, continues to deliver his signature style on Funk Man: The Stimulus Package. The high-energy album is comprised of raw lyrics, driving rhythms, and Del’s undeniable funkiness. Throughout Funk Man, Del challenges the listener to be genuine, especially when he says, “it’s okay to be who you are. You can be free. So what if people are taking about you, they’re going to be talking about you anyway and they probably want to be you. They wish they could by funky, let their hair grow out, be like you.” Del shows his commitment to this message and the funk in each track, from “Get It Right Now’s” sense of urgency, to “And They Thought That Was Hell’s” pop culture warning, and “Straight From the Big Bad West Coast’s” historical breakdown.

Funk Man: The Stimulus Package marks Del the Funky Homosapien’s 14th project as he has been in this hip-hop game for almost two decades. Starting at the tender age of 17 as protégé to his cousin, Ice Cube, Del quickly rose to the top of the underground hip hop scene with his albums, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need for Alarm (1993), both released through Elektra Records. Soon after parting ways with the label, Del joined the Hieroglyphics family, comprised of notable emcees Pep Love, the Souls of Mischief, Casual, and Domino.

As a witness to the destructive technology, i.e. video games, that replaced the comic book industry thirty years ago and seeing the same trends within the music industry today, Del has taken a proactive approach with Funk Man, in his reluctance to rely on standard distribution models. Funk Man: The Stimulus Package is Del’s journey back to basics and the timely message coupled with the LP’s free release display’s his acute awareness of his fan’s needs and the music industry at large.

As a teen, Opio hooked up with local rappers Tajai and A-Plus, whom he met through Casual, another emcee who was Opio's classmate and neighbor. The three instantly clicked and began recording together, soon adding fourth emcee Phesto Dee, to form the group Souls of Mischief. Together with Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Domino, and Pep Love, the legendary crew Hieroglyphics was born. Opio has always done double duty for Hiero as both an emcee and producer. Opio's recent production credits include the track "Naked Fonk" from Del's recent 11th Hour. Opio's first solo effort, 2005's Triangulation Station, moved over 20,000 units. Vulture's Wisdom, Volume 1 is the first chapter of a forthcoming trilogy from Opio. All three albums are produced by Oakland-based The Architect and will be released on Hiero Imperium records.
