About Ol’ Dirty Bastard

Russell Tyrone Jones aka Ol’ Dirty Bastard simultaneously brought a measure of humor and a touch of the absurd to the Wu-Tang Clan. Often noted for his unusual microphone technique, Jones’ stage name came from a 1980 kung fu fi lm entitled Ol’ Dirty & The Bastard, the relevance of which was articulated by Method Man’s assertion that there was “no father” to Jones’ style. After establishing the Wu-Tang Clan, Ol’ Dirty Bastard went on to a successful solo career. However, his professional success was hampered by his erratic personal behavior and frequent legal troubles, including incarceration He died in late 2004 of an accidental drug overdose only two days before his 36th birthday.

ODB’s solo career began in 1995, making him the third member of the Wu-Tang Clan to release a solo album, following GZA’s 1991 debut, Words from the Genius, and Method Man’s 1994 effort Tical. Released in 1995,
Return to Chambers: The Dirty Version spawned the hit singles “Brooklyn Zoo” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”, which helped propel the album to gold status. The album’s sound was as raw and gritty as 36 Chambers, producer RZA creating beats even more minimalist and stripped-down than on the group’s debut. When ODB died in 2004 he left behind a growing fan base and a legacy as the most talented and unique of the entire Wu-Tang Clan. This record recently uncovered deep in the vaults of the Wu-Tang chambers is a record that will satisfy his fans and is an offi cial ODB album and not a tribute album. This is ODB’s music raw and to the point.

“Message to the Other Side – Osiris Part 1” has 21 tracks. Executive produced by Allah and featuring Wu Tang Clan’s ODB, The RZA and affiliates 4th Disciple, Brooklyn Zu, Allah, Masta Killah, Free Murder and others. This record has Dirty’s family and the entire Wu-Tang Clan behind him. A bonus to this package is a DVD a 20 minute excerpt of the soon to be released film “Dirty,” a Rapumentary about ODB.

THE PRAIRIE CARTEL “WHERE DID ALL MY PEOPLE GO” RELEASED TODAY

On Long Nights, Impossible Odds

with distribution by Burnside & Ioda

Check out the Giorgio Moroder meets Modern Lovers groove of The Prairie Cartel’s “Cracktown” revisited by Hey Champ! On this mighty slick digitized visual delight.

Every so often a debut comes your way, and it’s possible to let it pass you by. Don’t let this one be one of those mistakes.

“Let it be said that I came dangerously close to not even playing this album. Somehow it made it into my car stereo – and I got into this album in a big way over the past few weeks.
Where Did All My People Go, has elements of The Prodigy (the good shit – the back half of Music For The Jilted Generation), LCD Soundsystem and moments of Kasabian and other recent UK Britpop acts. The Prairie Cartel have found a way to marry sublime vocals over interesting loops and beats in a way nobody else I’ve heard in the past few years has been able to.” -Fazer Magazine

“A mix between CSS and the Prodigy with the ubiquitous New Order influence present. From the get-go the band lets the listener know that its party time. “Keep Everybody Warm” has a bit of a Chemical Brothers vibe to it. The mood continues with “Homicide” which has all the panache LCD Soundsystem’s “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” and “Jump Like Chemicals” which sounds like a techno remix of Black Sabbath’s “Crazy Train”. -Surviving The Golden Age

“A Dirty freakout that bounces grimy guitar, throbbing beats and distant screeches off each other until your body can barely stand it.” -Chicago Tribune

Since today is record release day, this Chicago outfit are offering you some tasty disco biscuits from their sonically diverse, and slow-burning addictive debut Where Did All My People Go. First up, is our free mp3 download that truly captures the anarchy and spirit of a mid-western band giddy to wrap their electronics with the necks of their guitars.

Rearranged, and tweaked into near perfection this remix is courtesy of Chicago newcommers Bright Lights. Cheeky and fun crank this one up, grab it here and feel free to post!

DOWNLOAD NO LIGHT ESCPAES (BRIGHT LIGHTS REMIX) HERE

Another sizzling offering comes from the highly sought after Chicago duo Santiago and Bushido’s who’s tech house remix of Beautiful Shadow has been slammed in the local clubs and already a favorite from those who discovered it on the blogs. While Sensory overload says “For us they sound like the lead singer of The National fronting The Klaxons.” We think it’s David Gahan’s Personal Jesus roped in with some mighty fine tech-tinged house beats and laced with acid synths. There’s an undeniably organic sonic quality to their remix which pays tribute to the original version when the elements expand into spacier regions, but its core always remains punchy and solid.

What the Press Have been saying about The Prairie Cartel:

“Booming guitars freak out! A project both surprisingly accessible and disarmingly melodic. It’s about time!” -The Onion

“Raw, buzzsaw guitars grind against digital squeals and shouted choruses on “Suitcase Pimp” while tension builds in the hyper-local “Cracktown,” as it name-checks the grimy streets of Uptown. Elsewhere, the band flirts with melody over fuzz-laden riffs on “No Light Escapes Here” while pseudo-Primal Scream cover “Fuck Yeah That Wide” builds into a spastic, psychedelic freakout.” -Illinois Entertainer

“What sets The Prairie Cartel apart is an infusion of what we can only describe as the Midwestern work ethic into their tunes. The songs are solid, burly, and imposing in their approach. The members of The Prairie Cartel already have a long history crafting incredible rock and/or roll guitar hooks, so they meld that with their honest appreciation and manipulation of the dance genre to create a sonically monstrous hybrid. This flexibility, and intensity, mixed with the confident delivery of men certain of their pursuits, that makes Where Did All My People Go hold our attention for its duration, and it’s those things that send up to the turntable as the needle scratches towards the label, turn the record over, and play it all over again.” -Chicagoist

“The Prairie Cartel invokes what was great about the late 90s—industrial dance rock could top the charts, video games were gods, and we’d go anywhere as long as it meant we were out on Friday night. Gritty, tongue-in-cheek dancescapes. Sounds like: early NIN, The Faint, LCD Soundsystem.” -RCRD LBL

“An intelligent (and frankly quite talented) blend of high-energy electronic, dirty rock and unapologetic funk helps to create the soul of “Suitcase Pimp.” Lyrically, Chicago’s The Prairie Cartel seem to enjoy a lot of the same subject matter as fellow North-westerners, Electric Six. The music, however, is more pulse quickening. And while they’re not afraid to wear their dj roots on their sleeves; The Prairie Cartel uses it’s collective rock band past to create a danceable rock band future.” -The Daily Thread

The Prairie Cartel started as an excuse for Scott Lucas (Local H), Blake Smith and Mike Willison (both ex-Caviar) to do this in Mike’s basement while playing their favorite records. Albums on DFA, Matador, Wax Trax, Modular and Creation were all in heavy rotation during those dark months except when the whisky came out and it went all Ummagumma on them.

Where Did All My People Go is set for release on November 17th

MP3: “Blessa”

Loney Dear
TORO Y MOI

Toro Y Moi (a.k.a. Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick) is the sound the world has been waiting for. This multi-cultural juggernaut gathers up the best musical elements from around the globe- R&B, Indie Rock, Electronic Dance and Psychedelica -and creates something-freaking-else! Over the course of his first groundbreaking full length Causers Of This, Toro Y Moi turns the aforementioned musics upside-down with his breathtakingly innovative approach. The incendiary power of Toro Y Moi’s funky synth and guitar play, pumping digital rhythms and gorgeously bright vocal harmonies makes for a formidable combination. A soon to be masterpiece of a currently unnamed genre.

Bio:
Toro Y Moi is 23 year old Columbia, South Carolina native and resident Chaz Bundick. After earning a BFA in Graphic Design at The University of South Carolina, Chaz decided to push his music further now that he has more time on his hands. His mom came from the Phillipines to the United States, where she met her future husband (who’s African American) in college. They lived in New York City taking in all the wonderful cultural influences the city’s rising underground scene had to offer at the time (late 70s/early 80s). Deciding to slow down and be closer to family, they moved to Columbia, South Carolina where they had their first child…

Chaz Bundick’s methods are constantly changing and evolving. Heavily influenced by his parent’s vinyl and tape collection, he also possesses great admiration for contemporary influences like Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, J Dilla, and Daft Punk. Like most prepubescent teens, he had his punk band and once that died out, the “side project” soon became the main focus.

Toro y Moi started in 2001 as a bedroom project but quickly grew into the live performance realm. The songs are born from a plethora of different genres, from freak-folk to R&B to French House.

Before any full length album has been released, Toro Y Moi has already received praise from music websites like Pitchfork and Gorilla Vs. Bear as well as print features in the NME and Dazed and Confused.

MP3: Sareem Poems- “Rude Awakening” (feat. Oddisee & Kenn Starr) SoCal Teams Up With the DMV To Deliver Oddisee-Produced “Rude Awakening”

The Song:

After a critically acclaimed original release, Long Beach native Sareem Poems is releasing an unusually comprehensive Deluxe Edition of his album Black & Read All Over. The Deluxe Edition will include all fourteen of the original songs along with instrumentals for each track. The album’s most unique feature, however, might be its remixes. Sareem chose to remix the album’s centerpiece track, “Lower the Boom” not once or twice, but half a dozen times. Each remixed version of “Lower the Boom” was given a different name, and each features a different producer and new guest verses.

“Rude Awakening” is the first of the “Boom” remixes, and features typically fantastic contributions from DMV super-producer and Diamond District emcee Oddisee, as well as lyrical contributions from up-and-coming rapper DMV rapper Kenn Starr. Released by Mello Music Group, the remixes simply had produced too much good feedback for the label to keep them unreleased. Michael Tolle of Mello Music Group simply had no choice- “the promotional remixes started coming back from Oddisee, Fabio Musta, and Nick Tha 1Da and garnered so much attention, had so many people asking ‘what album is that on?’ that we felt we had to re-release the project with them included. We really wanted to make it worth people’s while since the project had already dropped, so we figured we’d give people the whole package.” The whole package is about to be delivered. Watch out for digital release of Black & Read All Over: Deluxe Edition, coming December 1 on Mello Music Group.

“Rude Awakening” (feat. Oddisee & Kenn Starr)

The Background:

For Sareem Poems, love is the revolution. The Long Beach, California bred emcee maintains a humble mentality while combining complex metaphors, catchy hooks, and heavy bass tone vocals. His positive music changes expectations within hip-hop as he speaks with truth & soul, omitting anything reminiscent of gun glorifying, thugged out rap. No novice to recording major releases, Sareem earned his stripes with the LA Symphony crew. He is now following up on the success of his Blooming Sounds project by enlisting Theory Hazit to man the boards on his newest release, as well as some guest production by D.C. super-producer Oddisee. The new album, Black & Read All Over Deluxe Edition, lets the raw vocals of Sareem Poems’ gospel mix with the haunting voice of Georgia Anne Muldrow, up-beat rhymes of Pigeon John, and Akil of J-5, along with a plethora of other prominent guests including Ragen Fykes who possesses one of the most beautiful voices in music today. The Deluxe Edition includes all 14 album cuts with their respective instrumentals, 5 remix tracks, and original artwork by Gene Pendon of HVW8 also included. Check out the Black & Read All Over Deluxe Edition available December 1st via Mello Music Group.

About Mello Music Group:

Like Lao Tzu in hip-hop, Mello Music Group provides music for the soul, from the heart of American culture, opening the realm of the intelligent hip-hop experience through melodic evocations, beats that corroborate the truth, and voices that roar above the rising void and impose order on the terrible & triumphant moments of everyday life. This is the compelling sound of Mello Music Group. Industry newcomer Michael Tolle founded MMG in 2007 and is acting Director of Operations. MMG will be releasing projects from Oddisee, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kenn Starr, Finale, Trek Life, Dudley Perkins, Sareem Poems, and YU in 2010.

Themselves

Seven months after the release of theFREEhoudini – the celebrated mixtape that announced Themselves’ return – Doseone and Jel will drop CrownsDown, a careful and vicious exhibition of mastered rap tactics and sampling ethics. Themselves’ third album proper has been gestating in the gut of this seminal group for some time. It’s both a return to form and a honing of what’s come before (Subtle, cLOUDDEAD, Deep Puddle) – both the opus that these lionhearted two were always meant to make, and the album that their hip-hop-obsessed teenaged selves always hoped to hear.

On CrownsDown, Themselves hold back nothing, welding brute skill to a concrete set of tracks that represents an essential ten commandments of rap. In preparation, Doseone and Jel revisited their beloved hip-hop collections (e.g. Gang Starr, Ultramagnetic MCs, Public Enemy, Saafir) and whittled down the recurring themes that made their favorite records so sturdy. Each song on CrownsDown represents one of these archetypes – you’ll find the “don’t bite” song, the diss track, the story rap, the “bootleggers beware” song, and the “don’t fuck with my DJ” jam, among others. In this way, Themselves revisit something classic in order to invent their own future-school entry to the annals.

Naturally, things kick off with “Back II Burn,” a “guess who’s back” track (co-written by Pedestrian) that bangs forth on good ol’ fashioned synth hits and heavy thump. Rugged slow rhymes and fast-rap pile-ons are delivered with equal aplomb, and Jel ramps up the distortion as Dose spits vitriol: “Whether shining or shunned, none and all can come/and get undone by the two in the selves one.” “Oversleeping” follows with a Bomb Squad-style sampler salvo and a whirlwind of rhyme that reference-checks lyrics from both Nas and Subtle. Next up is “The Mark,” wherein Dose cautions would-be style thieves, while borrowing his own cadence from Ultramag-era Kool Keith. Jel deals out break-driven electro bounce and a furious, unprecedented rap verse of his own, while D-Styles mans the cuts.

“Gangster Of Disbelief” finds Dose dropping science (the fourth archetype) in a rich baritone atop eerie production that harks back to his and Jel’s debut. He connects the dots from Sisyphus to Werner Herzog’s writings to his own neuroses and worldview, while “Daxstrong” takes on the spread-love model, paying proper tribute to Subtle founder Dax Pierson, left paraplegic after the sextet’s 2005 tour accident. Bandmates Jordan Dalrymple and Markus Acher (13 & God, The Notwist) join Dose for an end-song sing-along of TVOTR magnitude. The next two tracks respectively take well-aimed shots at false musical prophets and modern-day bootleggers (MP3-traders). “You Ain’t It” features an Auto-tuned guest spot from Dax himself, playing the melodic foil to Dose’s jagged and rapid fire words, while “Roman Is As Roman Does” serves up electronics-damaged boom-bap for a set of X-Clan-inspired raps.

“Skinning The Drum” rains praise on Jel, who responds in kind with a trademark live MPC performance vivifying the old “Apache” and “Cold Sweat” breaks. On “Deadcatclear II,” Dose is uncommonly nude, spinning a real-life narrative about playing caretaker to a stray cat’s corpse as a child, discovering incredulity for God in the severity of death. All of which lays foundation for the crux end of CrownsDown, “Gold Teeth Will Roll.” Here, over surging cutup soul, Dose growls, “Who will come kill me/taking their rings off like women/because I will swear on their weakness,” casting Themselves in the final archetype: righteous defenders of the culture. This sentiment cuts to the core of CrownsDown. In carving out their own classic, Doseone and Jel not only aim to topple those wrongly kinged, but lay down their own sweat-and-blood-made crowns at the feet of the thing they admire most.

Souls Of Mischief Set to Inflict Montezuma’s Revenge + New Track Revealed Souls’ First New Album Since 2000 Produced By Prince Paul

Critical Praise for Montezuma’s Revenge:

“…this has the makings of a brand new classic set to shake things up all over again. 9/10″ – RapReviews.com

(November 11, 2009- Brooklyn, NY) Legendary Oakland hip-hop group Souls of Mischief are preparing to release Montezuma’s Revenge, their first album in almost a decade. The album, to be released on December 1st, was produced by the renowned Prince Paul.

After a nine-year hiatus, Souls of Mischief have reassembled to create a hotly anticipated new full-length album. While they may be best known for their debut album (and its title track) 93 ’til Infinity, Souls of Mischief have been producing highly regarded albums and putting on wildly popular live shows for more than fifteen years. After so long, it would be forgiven if fans assumed that the Souls had broken up, but those paying attention would tell you that A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai never stopped collaborating. Whether through their shared venture Hieroglyphics or on each other’s solo albums, the legendary emcees have clearly lost none of their verbal chemistry. Souls’ trademark juxtaposition of complex, multi-syllabic lyricism against laid-back Cali flow remains as strong as it was in 1993.

Legendarily innovative producer Prince Paul (De La Soul, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Gravediggaz) was brought onboard to take Souls’ sound to a new level. While the aforementioned and unmistakable Souls of Mischief sound remains very much intact, Paul’s vision and risk-taking come through on the finished product. Tajai was comfortable from the start in working with the visionary producer. “Paul is a perfectionist and so are we so we took time with the beats and subject matter.”

Despite the hiatus, Souls have stayed very much on their game. In fact, they believe they’ve stepped it up. Tajai says, “This album to me is a great insight into who we are as people and how important it is to progress stylistically, yet it retains a classic, timeless feel.”

Check the latest track to be released from the album, “Proper Aim”

Souls of Mischief on tour now: Montezuma’s Revenge World Tour ‘09 Dates

The Background:

Souls Of Mischief is an alternative hip-hop group from Oakland, CA that is also part of the hip-hop collective, Hieroglyphics. The group consists of emcees A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai. With classic albums like 93 ’til Infinity, No Man’s Land, Focus, and Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution, all of which were critically acclaimed and have been certified Gold by the RIAA. The Souls Of Mischief are now gearing up to release their first album in almost 10 years, entitled Montezuma’s Revenge. Produced by Domino and Prince Paul, the album will be released December 2nd via Hiero Imperium Records.
