RZA of Wu-Tang To Contribute Rare Memorabilia To Staten Island Music Exhibit

Renowned producer, lyricist, director, and Abbott of the Wu-Tang Clan RZA has contributed significantly rare memorabilia to the upcoming interactive music exhibit ISLAND SOUNDS: A 500 Year Music Mash-Up. The exhibit, which will take place at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden in RZA’s native Staten Island, is set to feature never-before-seen photos and memorabilia from one of RZA’s extraordinary pilgrimages to the Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng, China. Additionally RZA has donated a true piece of music history by allowing Snug Harbor to exhibit the keyboard used by the super-producer himself on Wu-Tang Clan’s seminal album Enter The Wu (36 Chambers). True hip-hop heads will not want to pass up this opportunity to see genuine artifacts from the Wu-Tang general.

In addition to RZA’s involvement in the exhibit, rare and historic items from several Staten Island artists will be on display for ISLAND SOUNDS including Force MDs’ trademark apparel, personal photos and awards, and an autographed LP of Born This Way by Lady Gaga. Snug Harbor will also showcase Gaga’s biopic, Mary The Night, and will hold displays on Eamon, Omin Child and Christina Aguilera, in addition to numerous displays of rare photos and gold/platinum albums from Staten Island musicians.

“We are excited and pleased to present this unique exhibit as a tribute to the countless artists who have played a role in Staten Island’s rich and varied musical history,” said Snug Harbor President and CEO Lynn Kelly. “The exhibit memorializes the contributions of these artists and defines the part they played and continue to play in our diversified culture. I urge everyone with an interest in music, pop culture and the history of Staten Island to come and enjoy the hundreds of unique pieces of memorabilia that make up the ISLAND SOUNDS exhibition.”

ISLAND SOUNDS: A 500 Year Music Mash-Up will begin it’s 18-month long exhibition on May 11, 2012 in the Main Hall of the Snug Harbor campus located at 1000 Richmond Terrace. Beginning May 12, the exhibit will be open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5pm. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Children under 12 are admitted free. For more information about ISLAND SOUNDS: A 500 Year Music Mash-Up, please contact Lynn Kelly at (718) 425-3501.
Over the course of five days, five classic albums from the five boroughs of New York City will be revisited in discussions and workshops throughout New York City. From September 25 – 30 Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan will be the landing spots for each lecture and performance that will pay homage to arguably the most influential youth culture of our time – Hip Hop – right where it all began. At night, the artists will re-create their seminal work for a concert, bridging the gap from old to new school hip-hop.

Red Bull Music Academy has embarked on a World Tour going straight to the heart of today’s most crucial musical movements, and taking listeners beyond the beat. New York City is one of 10 groundbreaking celebrations and explorations around the globe that will feature signature concerts, workshops, art installations, studio sessions and parties in extraordinary locations.

Below is a list of the venues, dates, facilitators and performers for each borough.

QUEENS – Sun, Sep 25 featuring Mobb Deep’s ‘The Infamous’
Queens, birthplace of hip-hop pioneers such as MC Shan, LL Cool J, Nas, Run DMC and A Tribe Called Quest, will be the first borough focus for the Red Bull Music Academy World Tour. “The Infamous,” Mobb Deep’s magnum opus, is still one of the most influential pieces of work to come out of the 90s hip-hop movement and was instrumental in putting the Queensbridge Housing Projects back on the map.

BRONX – Tue, Sep 27 featuring Slick Rick’s “The Great Adventures Of…”
Slick Rick’s “The Great Adventures Of…” has clearly stood the test of time as a classic body of work. Tracks “Children’s Story” and “Mona Lisa” are two of the most recognizable songs of all time and Rick’s music has been covered by fellow hip-hop heavyweights like Nas and Black Star.

STATEN ISLAND – Wed, Sep 28 featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s “Enter the 36 Chambers”
The Wu-Tang Clan effectively bum rushed the hip-hop industry with a debut album that not only put Staten Island on the map but revolutionized the concept of a crew album as all members of the Wu followed “Enter the 36 Chambers” with classic solo albums.

Black Moon’s “Enta the Stage” marked the birth of the Boot Camp Clik, a Brooklyn based crew who would emerge as one of the top independent hip-hop labels of all time. “Who Got the Props?,” “I Got Cha Opin” and “How Many Emcees?” remain some of the most revered tracks of all time in New York’s deep hip-hop history.

I assume it doesn’t need to be said that Wu-Tang Clan isn’t the everyday conventional group of rappers. But for the purpose of this writing, I think it’s important to highlight just how unconventional they are, and why they don’t have any place on the radio. Wait, don’t panic, this is a good thing. Wu-Tang has always said what no one else wants to say and many don’t want to hear, and that’s what makes them one of the most influential rap groups in two decades. Wu-Tang Clan’s most recent album Legendary Weapons vividly echoes the group’s famous no holds barred attitude.

Wu-Tang Clan has come a long way since its start in New York in 1992—from solo albums to movie careers, it would seem RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, and U-God have been everywhere. Legendary Weapons, however, confirms that Wu-Tang Clan hasn’t forgotten where it comes from. It is loud, in your face, and raw, both musically and lyrically. “Start the Show” begins the album with a fierce criticism of the current political and social climates, making a forceful thesis for the rest of the record. Likewise, you’ll find Method Man rapping, “No justice in the system, look around, it’s just us, they tell me only God can judge us” in the track “Diesel Fluid.”

Legendary Weapons continues with a variety of tracks that differ in tone, speed, and melody. While “Never Feel This Pain” is a bluesy, syrupy track about getting out of the ghetto, the song “Legendary Weapons” carries a thumping beat and is layered with various sound bytes; it’s a throwback to their old, stripped down beats. But as diverse as the Legendary Weapons’ sound may be, two aspects remain true on the album: the group’s honesty and outspokenness. Nowhere on Legendary Weapons will you find a collaboration with a mainstream, pop rap artist. In fact, Wu-Tang even hates on a few of them on the album—but I’ll let you find those gems yourself.

Legendary Weapons is most definitely a legendary effort by a group of guys who continue to put out complex, thought-provoking, and political music. It’s everything you’d expect from historically one of the most controversial and outspoken rap groups out there. And somehow, the Wu-Tang boys have managed to have shaped what rap is today all while staying out of the mainstream spotlight. They’re too real for the radio. Which makes them pretty much awesome in my book.
