Flat Duo Jets unveil soundtrack to documentary film, groundbreaking garage-blues duo influenced Jack White, Chan Marshall, Neko Case and many more.

Flat Duo Jets unveil soundtrack to documentary film, groundbreaking garage-blues duo influenced Jack White, Chan Marshall, Neko Case and many more.

From the late ‘80s to mid-90s, the intrepid garage-blues duo — that’s right, such a thing did exist before the White Stripes — the Flat Duo Jets paved a rollicking path with its raw intensity and soulful charm. While the band is now long gone, the duo has announced release of Two Headed Cow, the soundtrack to the 2006 documentary of the same name. The disc contains seventeen unreleased tracks recorded in 1986, ranging from early FDJ favorites (“My Life, My Love”, “Mexicali Baby”) to jaw dropping cover tunes (The Collins Kids’ “Hoy Hoy”, Ray Charles’ “Mary Ann”).

Two Headed Cow is a movie about roots rocker Dexter Romweber and his music. His original band the Flat Duo Jets was one of the most influential bands of the last two decades and has been an inspiration for many other musicians from Jack White and Cat Power to the Rev. Horton Heat and Neko Case (White, Chan Marshall aka Cat Power and Case appear in the film along with Exene Cervenka and Jason Edge of the Original Sinners.) Visually stunning and filmically poetic — and featuring original black and white footage dating back to 1986 — Two Headed Cow traces the formative years of the band through their signing to a major label through the break-up and Dexter’s life today. It tells the story of an artist who never compromised and never backed down. The film was directed by Tony Gayton (Athens, Ga. – Inside/Out, Murder By Numbers), produced by Emmy winning casting director Lisa Wells Fincannon and Bill Cody along with executive producers Craig Fincannon and Frank Capra, Jr. premiering at the Full Frame documentary film festival in Durham, NC April 8th, 2006.

With origins dating back to the mid-80s, Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s Flat Duo Jets finally made the leap to a major label in 1998. However, it was not coincidental that the label they moved to, Outpost Recordings, was overseen by highly esteemed alternative rock forefather and R.E.M. producer Scott Litt. He had seen the band develop over a 10-year period and considered the duo (vocalist/guitarist Dexter Romweber and drummer Crow) to be “phenomenal’. Their energetic revival of early rockabilly had first come to prominence after featuring in the 1986 music documentary, Athens, Ga. – Inside/Out. They subsequently released a series of independent albums for a variety of local labels, with highpoints including 1990’s self-titled long-playing debut and 1993’s White Trees.

For Flat Duo Jets’ Outpost debut, Lucky Eye, Litt contracted dB’s alumnus Chris Stamey, who worked alongside him as co-producer. Sessions were completed at the Muscle Shoals Sound studios in Alabama, and over 18 tracks explored roots rock, traditional R&B and surf guitar with Romweber’s distinctive playing being influenced by old rockabilly records, and Charlie Feathers in particular. A 12-piece orchestra, arranged and conducted by Susie Katayama, contributed to songs such as “New York Studio 1959” and “Lonely Guy”. Other contributors included Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher, the horn players for the Squirrel Nut Zippers. By 1999 the band had broken up. It was nevertheless stated that there was a “strong possibility” that the duo would work together again in the future. Romweber carried on the Flat Duo Jets mix of rockabilly, blues and surf music on a number of well-received solo releases.

Switches “Lay Down the Law” out today on Interscope Records

“Switches justify their cockiness with talent, excelling in the feisty hooks and high-pitched oo-oo-oos that hark back to the glam era at its best. If you’ve hoped for a missing link between T. Rex and the Killers (and hoped the balance would tilt toward the former), swaggering salvation is at hand.” – Entertainment Weekly

After a successful nationwide tour with recent stops at some of the hottest SXSW showcases, Switches are releasing their debut album “Lay Down the Law” today, March 18, 2008. Come and celebrate with the lads tonight at The Roxy with special performances by Glacier Hiking, Castledoor, DJ Hyphy Crunk and of course Switches.

“In light of all the mild-mannered Coldplay knockoffs of the last few years, it’s easy to forget that British rockers used to be cocky young things, happy to bang out shout-along choruses filled with drug references. Switches remember; their debut LP sounds as if it were written with soccer stadiums in mind, complete with chirpy harmonies and hooks…” – BLENDER

“‘Drama Queen’ is a song that runs rings around The Vines and makes Supergrass look lethargic.” – NME

“Combining foot-stomping drums and bass with tight vocals and sharp guitar riffs, Switches are as cocksure as their pop piers.”- Spin

“The British indie rising stars have created another Brit Pop hit and are making confident future strides with their Switches Swagger.” – Filter

“Tunes like “Drama Queen” and “Lay Down the Law” have enough hooks and sleaze-rock muscle to deserve to find their way to mainstream American rock radio.” – Boston Herald

“Each track on the album comes spiked with near-intoxicating levels of classic Brit-pop and a gritty, working-class swagger only available on the blue-collar streets of London. And it’s all lined up in a perfectly infectious 4/4 time, of course.” – NYLON

“For Switches to get so much right so soon, they’ve either got a platter with one good song or chock-fucking-full of them. Since the former is more likely, your’re gobsmacked when these impossible Frankenstein tunes – abit of T. Rex, The Cars, ELO, Blur, even Buzzcocks – keep coming in a relentless charge, a sequence plotted by God. ” – HARP

Switches are Steve Godfrey, Matt Bishop, Ollie Thomas and Thom Kirkpatrick

What a Gift — The Wedding Present to drop new album El Rey on May 20 on Manifesto Records

Legendary UK act The Wedding Present will be releasing its first new full length in over three years on May 20. Titled El Rey, the album was recorded in early 2008 in Chicago by Steve Albini, marking the band’s first record with the noted producer since 1991’s renowned Seamonsters. Manifesto Records will be the U.S. record label.

Written while frontman David Gedge was living in Los Angeles, El Rey burns with West Coast sunlight; Hollywood seen through the eyes of a gritty British Northerner. Speaking about El Rey in MOJO Magazine recently, Gedge said: “I’ve been living in West Hollywood for the last year or so, and while I’m not going to claim that this is my ‘L.A.’ album, there are some references. I suppose the themes are lust, jealousy, betrayal, regret, obsession, super-heroes… the usual. We chose to record with Steve this time because the new songs were sounding very guitar-ry and quite dark. It’s been good. As you’d imagine, really; Albini knows his stuff.”

TWP returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release of Take Fountain. The long-awaited album brought them back into the spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a legendary group, but fans were also pleased to see the band had lost none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene with the 1985 debut, George Best. The band was a favorite of the famed late UK DJ John Peel.

The Wedding Present will be touring North America in the Fall 2008 with the line-up of: David Gedge (guitar and vocals), Terry de Castro (bass), Graeme Ramsay (drums), and Chris McConville (guitar).

Bing Ji Ling impersonators spotted around Manhattan — see the real deal onstage in NYC this week. New EP June Degrees In December out now.

“I saw Bing Ji Ling riding a bike near the Bedford stop in Brooklyn.” – Jenn de la Vega, Fanatic Promotion

“I saw him at the bus stop at 11th and A, and then the next day at Whole Foods.” – Josh Bloom, Fanatic Promotion

“I wasn’t at either of those spots… I was on tour with Lynard Skynard.” – Bing Ji Ling.

The Bing Ji Ling sightings mentioned above are not isolated incidents. This occurrence seems to be a daily thing with Quinn Luke who claims there are several folks impersonating him throughout New York City. And why wouldn’t there be?

For a man described as “funkier than Fudgie the Whale with a blunt in his blowhole” by Pitchfork and so talented that he “tickles the keys and channels early Prince, Mick Hucknall, and Earth, Wind & Fire, while bringing his funk squarely into the 21st century” (XLR8R), who wouldn’t wanna jack his style?

Bing Ji Ling’s new EP June Degrees In December is out now. See below for a full EP stream and MP3s and if you’re in NYC, check him out live tonight at the 105 Club (105 Rivington St.).

More about Bing Ji Ling:

As stated, Bing Ji Ling is the nom de plume of one Quinn Luke, a NYC-based producer/musician with a rich legacy of work behind and in front of him. His new EP, June Degrees In December, a work of stunning, soulful talent, marks the finest chapter in his career. He’s the man with The Vintage Sound and Modern Appeal.

As a member of legendary skater-cum-musician Tommy Guerrero’s group, Luke has toured the world, wowing crowds at festivals such as Fuji Rock in Japan. As Coppa, a duo comprised of Luke and legendary crate-digging haven Groove Merchants’ Chris Veltri, Luke has also produced a series of 12-inch singles that have earned the praise of Space Disco tastemakers such as Prins Thomas and Todd Terje. Recently, he produced art funk outfit Tussle’s critically hailed Telescope Mind after which he formed the duo Expanding Head Band with Tussle songwriter Alexis Georgopoulos. The duo’s first releases are to appear on DFA, Smalltown Supersound and Lo Recordings. He has also remixed Honeycut and Curumin (Quannum Projects) and Romanowski (Trouser Trout) and has collaborated with The Rondo Brothers (Fortune Records) and Tommy Guerrero and Blackalicious (Quanum Projects). Luke also DJ’s regularly at NYC hotspots such as 205 Club and the Gold Bar and has recently joined NYC’s Band of Thieves on keyboards.

As Bing Ji Ling, Luke has released two full-length albums on his and former production partner Merkley’s Kreme Kul Records. June Degrees In December is the first release on his own To The Curb Productions. If the aforementioned projects have been hypnotic abstractions of funk and soul, as Bing Ji Ling, Luke brings the real deal. Bing Ji Ling reveals honeyed vocal stylings with a range that would impress Mariah. Hear his cover version of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” (originally released on Ubiquity Record’s Rewind 3 compilation) on MySpace for proof. Stylistically, one can detect traces of Prince, Shuggie Otis, Rare Groove, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, D’Angelo, Maxwell and Beck.

Named for the Chinese words for ice cream (Luke spent a year in Shanghai and became fluent in Mandarin during his residency), Luke’s performances took this concept to legendary lengths. Live shows at venues such as Bowery Ballroom and Knitting Factory (NYC), Viper Room (LA), the Warfield (SF) and Liquid Room (Tokyo) included a small army of “Ice Cream Ladies” handing out the sweet treat, Bing in full regalia, and the band in 1950’s era Good Humor Ice Cream Man uniforms. The debut Bing Ji Ling album included contributions from No Doubt’s drummer Adrian Young and Luke’s right-hand man Merkely. Press coverage included XLR8R, Swindle, and ReUp Magazine.

In 2007, Luke relocated from San Francisco to New York. And with that came a renewed sense of purpose. June Degrees In December marks both a continuation of Luke’s pure “soul pop” ecstasy and something of a departure. If vintage soul and funk and an over-the-top persona defined Luke’s first releases, June Degrees finds Luke bringing his taste for yacht rock and 80s R&B into the mix and a tempering of the extreme aspects of his persona.

Appropriately titled, it’s the equivalent of a warm breeze during these winter months. A reverie for future good times. Opener “Kathalina” (MP3) coaxes an island sound that would make Michael McDonald and Maroon 5 blush. The sultry jam that is the title track is a summer between-the-sheets classic in the making. “Be Here With You” (MP3) suggests a meeting of Elvis Costello’s “Every Day I Write The Book” and Freddy Jackson or perhaps Luther Vandross.

Luke has the kind of melodic sensibility most would kill for (which says nothing of his musical chops and taste for vintage instruments.) Utilizing a small arsenal of gear which includes Fender Rhodes piano, analog synthesizers, all manner of percussion and bass, drums and guitar, Luke coaxes a warm, familiar sound that sounds fresh.

The cover art features one Luke’s favorite painters, Black Dragon. As a collector of outsider folk art, Luke has developed an idiosyncratic palette. It’s the perfect cover for June Degrees and is another striking example of Luke’s unique and visionary sensibility.

Bing Ji Ling recently wrapped up a seven-day Florida cruise playing with Band of Thieves on their tour with Lynard Skynard and a string of shows at South By Southwest. More live dates at the annual Winter Music Conference will be announced soon.

Pemberton music fest brings Coldplay, Jay-Z to B.C.
Amy O’Brian, Vancouver Sun
Published: Thursday, March 13, 2008

The quiet town of Pemberton will be a lot louder for three days this summer when a major music festival lands in the Pemberton Valley, bringing with it bands such as Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails and the Tragically Hip.

More than 50 musical acts are scheduled to appear at the expansive outdoor venue, attracting about 40,000 people to the bucolic mountain town north of Whistler. Jay-Z, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Black Mountain, Death Cab for Cutie and My Morning Jacket are also listed in the impressive lineup.

Inspired by the success of other large-scale outdoor music festivals such as England’s Glastonbury Festival, California’s Coachella Festival, and Washington’s Sasquatch Music Festival, the Pemberton Festival will have on-site camping, food, a farmer’s market, attractions for kids, a medical clinic and more. The site is located just off Highway 99, close to central Pemberton.

Three-day passes go on sale March 28 at 10 a.m. and will cost $239.50. No single-day passes will be available. The festival will take place July 25, 26 and 27.

News of the festival was leaked today by, a music industry website. The festival was supposed to be announced this morning by selected radio stations.

Shane Bourbonnais, president of concert production company Live Nation, spoke to The Vancouver Sun this afternoon from Pemberton, where he was preparing to meet with residents and local officials later in the day to discuss the festival.

Bourbonnais said he first approached Pemberton Village officials and the community last October to propose the idea of the major festival.

“The people of Pemberton have opened up their arms and welcomed us right from the beginning, which makes it a lot easier to put on an event like us,” he said.

“The setting is second to none and with the proximity to Whistler and the new highway, there are so many things going for Pemberton right now.”

Coldplay – a British band that has sold more than 30 million albums – is releasing a new album in May, but Pemberton is the only festival they will play at this summer, Bourbonnais said.

Attracting bands to the festival – once organizers had been given the go-ahead by RCMP, transportation authorities, health authorities and others – was fairly easy, he added.

“One of the great things about this festival site is, it’s incredibly beautiful. I don’t think there’s a festival site that can compare to this one. You’re at the base of Mount Currie, you’re 25 minutes from world-class Whistler,” he said.

“Festivals are becoming very popular and bands really like to play festivals because there are great audiences and there’s great camaraderie among the bands.

“You start to get a couple of bands and then next thing you know, another band hears about it, and another band hears about it and instead of us making the calls, they’re starting to call us.”

It helped, of course, the Live Nation has a good track record in this region and that Bourbonnais has been working with Coldplay since the band was playing the Commodore.

Bourbonnais said some of the bands are planning vacations around the festival and he hopes festival-goers will also take advantage of the outdoor activities available in the region.

Live Nation is dedicated to making this a green festival, meaning those who carpool with four or more people will get free parking, and hydro-electric energy will be the main power source. Local farmers will benefit from the event through the farmers market and an effort will be made by the festival to serve local produce wherever possible.

About 20,000 tent campers can be accommodated on the 360-acre site and there will also be an RV park. For those who prefer to have a roof over their head and a bed under their back, there are plenty of hotel and motel rooms in the village of Pemberton and down the highway in Whistler.

Bourbonnais said he hopes to make the festival an annual event and added there is room for growth in the future. About 37,000 people at this summer’s festival will be ticket-holders, while the remaining 3,000 will be volunteers and support workers, but that will be just 60 to 70 per cent of the festival’s allowed capacity.

To compare numbers, capacity at the Coachella Festival is about 60,000. Capacity at Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Festival is about 70,000, and capacity at the Sasquatch Festival in the Gorge is about 20,000.

Accommodation in Pemberton for the Pemberton Music Festival

Ike Reilly, the leader of Chicago-based band The Ike Reilly Assassination, will be back with a vengeance on April 8th with the release of his latest album, “Poison The Hit Parade.” The record is a collection of songs taken from demos from his brilliant debut, “Salesmen and Racists,” and alternate versions of songs from the blistering “Sparkle In The Finish” and 2007’s “We Belong To The Staggering Evening,” as well as the previously unreleased title track and the massive and poignant cancer anthem, “Dragonflies.”

“Poison” showcases Reilly and his bandmate Ed Tinley as producers unencumbered by the major label system and willing to frame a song in any vibe needed to hold the melodies and tales of Reilly’s unique vision. Beginning with the title track, “Poison The Hit Parade” continues Reilly’s prolific assault with images of characters in a conflicted middle America: patriotic doubt, the celebration of life and death, high school girls in summer dresses and more theoretical assassination attempts.

His longtime band, The Assassination, is present on several of the tracks here, but many other fine musicians can be heard on these recordings made in Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, New York City, Jamaica and Ireland.

In typical fashion, press praise for Reilly’s previous release, “We Belong To The Staggering Evening,” was copious and glowing. To wit:

– “Ike Reilly is probably the best songwriter in America… this new one is just a straight-up killer. Hilarious, unsettling, raw… but mostly just rocking… Awesome record by an awesome songwriter… Not just a best-of-year record, but maybe an all-timer.” –

– “…rock-legend cocky…packed with insanely catchy, air-punching anthems of American nomadism… [Reilly] gets funnier and prouder the harder life smacks him…” – Blender

– “…one of the most throat-grabbing surprises of the year. …[Reilly is] Philip Marlowe in rock form, his words tumbling out as melodic beat poetry…” – No Depression

– “…an infectious blend of electric blues, acoustic folk and no-frills rock ‘n’ roll. … Reilly drawls, snarls, and croons through a dozen winning tracks here…” – Harp

– “…[“We Belong To The Staggering Evening”] features some of Reilly’s sharpest and wittiest songs yet. The record gets its title from a line of what may go down as one of the year’s best singles…” –

– “An eloquent wiseguy whose songs evoke Bob Dylan and Paul Westerberg, Mr. Reilly… has the kind of high-energy, hook-heavy folk-rock sound that turns every head in a bar…”– New York Times

– “…never less than original, this ferociously intelligent artist/band is always worth listening to.” – USA

You won’t hear a debut as original and exciting as this all year: Cleveland duo mr. Gnome finds unique alchemy of Cat Power, Death from Above 1979, Blonde Redhead, Celebration and Pelican. First single “Pirates” available for download now.

“Boy does this Ohio duo make a lot of noise. Such is the overwhelming nature of the twosome’s aggressive-yet-beautiful sound.” – Paste Magazine

“The duos’ aggressive yet melodic style is catchy and very innovative. The group is sure to become one of the top most new acts in the country.” – Chicago Flame

The music of mr. Gnome has been described as utilizing elements of AltRock, Metal, Post Punk, and Prog, but lands in a realm of their own making, crafting a compelling sonic-psychedelic melange of indie rock. Since its conception in 2005, the Cleveland duo has released two EPs, receiving wide-ranging and honorable comparisons to Massive Attack, PJ Harvey, Tool, Portishead, Cat Power, Pelican, Death From Above 1979, Celebration and Blonde Redhead. Above all else, mr. Gnome’s compositions work — and in very unusual and clearly soon-to-be-influential ways, where truly adequate descriptions aren’t yet available.

While comparisons vary, one thing is certain – the duo’s unique sound explores unpredictable shades of violence and intensity, while meshing the sludgy, reverberating monsoon of hardcore with the feminine. Its debut full-length CD, Deliver This Creature, hits stores May 6, 2008 on El Marko Records.

Guitarist/vocalist Nicole Barille and drummer Sam Meister began experimenting a few years ago with a sound based on minimalist instrumentation and the rigid dichotomy of soft vs. loud and masculine vs. feminine. Within a year, the two released their first EP, Echoes on the Ground, and were touring the regional circuit. Their second EP, self-titled, was released in November of 2006 and the two, having hooked up with Lost Barrio Artists, a booking agency based out of Tucson, AZ now found themselves touring nationally. After completing their first two national tours, Barille and Meister found it hard to go back to the daily grind and felt an immediate urgency to continue traveling the countryside.

With the road calling, Nicole and Sam ditched their belongings in a storage space and temporarily parted ways with the Midwest. mr. Gnome, an officially homeless band, began touring the United States, living out of a van and sleeping on random couches for the second part of 2007. With a handful of new material in their setlist, the two used practice spots along the way to complete the writing of their new creation and by the force of their journey, discovered both Larry Crane’s Jackpot Studios (Elliott Smith, Cat Power, The Shins, The Decemberists) in Portland, Oregon and Craig Schumacher’s Wavelab Studios (Calexico, DeVotchka, Neko Case, Animal Collective) in Tucson, Arizona where they recorded their first full-length album with engineers Kendra Lynn, and Chris Schultz. mr. Gnome headed back to Cleveland to put the finishing touches on their album at Ante Up Audio (Bone Thugs N’ Harmony, Tori Amos, Guided By Voices) working with Michael Seifert. The album was then mixed at Butch Vig’s Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin by Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie).

With four national tours under their belt within the last year and countless regional dates, mr. Gnome, with the support of El Marko Records, will continue to tour the countryside in spring of 2008, with dates nationwide being scheduled for May.

More Quotes From The Press:

“mr. Gnome glides through catchy and crunchy hard rock arrangements, thanks to big sonic blasts of aggressive elegance. The Cleveland duo showcases a knack for squeezing big hooks into hard driving numbers.” – Amplifier Magazine

“Intense, singer-ly vocals are set against distorted guitar and huge drums, and it’s hard to believe all that noise comes from just two people.” – Tucson Citizen

“Two Midwestern kids who play the kind of rock ‘n’ roll you thought no one played anymore.” – Tucson Weekly

“Cleveland rocks, indeed: This Midwestern two-piece manipulates easy rock cliches and uses deliciously off-balance, schizophrenic time changes of their songs to make enviable and glorious noise.” – Las Vegas City Life

“A mix of Death From Above 1979 with the intense vocal wail of Diamanda Galas, while Kurt Cobain sits in on guitar. In short, mr. Gnome makes a lot of beautiful noise.” – Albuquerque Journal

THE FALL OF TROY — back from Australia, heading to Canada, then full U.S. tour and stopping by Bamboozle!

MAR 7 2008 – THE FALL OF TROY are back!

Literally, they’re back in the States after playing the Soundwave Festival in Australia and a few shows surrounding the fest. Drummer Andrew Forsman described the crowds as, “somewhat of a mix between the U.S. and Europe. Once you got them going, they went absolutely crazy.” Of the whole experience, “It was incredible. The kids were nuts and the other bands were super friendly and welcoming.”

In April, THE FALL OF TROY will hit the road in Canada for the first time… and who better to do so with than with Canadian metal-gods, Protest The Hero. The 5-show trek will bring them through Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg.

Immediately following their Canada run, THE FALL OF TROY return to the U.S. for a five week headlining tour which launches April 18th in Denver, CO. The tour includes a stop at the Bamboozle festival on May 4th in E. Rutherford, NJ and the tour’s grand finale will take place near the band’s hometown in Seattle, WA on May 24th. The Dear Hunter, Foxy Shazam, and Tera Melos will be on hand to support.

In 2007, following the May release of their third record, Manipulator (which has sold over 40k records to date), THE FALL OF TROY took to the road with alternative rock mega-band, Deftones in the summer and with Coheed And Cambria in the fall/winter. The band made internet-headlines while on tour with Coheed when original bassist and longtime friend, Tim Ward, decided to leave the band. Not ones to miss a beat, THE FALL OF TROY enlisted the help of friend, Frank Black and finished out the tour with great praise. Black has since become a permanent member of the band while all sustain their friendship with Ward.

The band has also been gaining some extra attention since the release of Guitar Hero III last year. Their song “F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.”, the single from the phenomenal sophomore record, Doppelganger, is featured in the game as an unlockable song. “They came to us and they wanted that song. Obviously it was a no-brainer to us to get on it. I think it’s really cool,” says singer/guitarist, Thomas Erak. When asked if he’s tried the song out himself, Erak says “I actually have tried playing it but I don’t really feel the need to play the game. I already do it in real life!”

Thomas, Andrew, and Frank are currently home and available for phone interviews. They’ll also be available at the shows for interviews or some other kind of unique feature. For more information about the band, a copy of their albums and press kit, or to request tickets for a review or interview, feel free to contact me!
