FERRAS TO BRING ALIENS & RAINBOWS ON THE ROAD WITH RYAN CABRERA Acclaimed Singer-Songwriter Ferras Opening For Ryan Cabrera Beginning June 1st in Baltimore

FERRAS TO BRING ALIENS & RAINBOWS ON THE ROAD WITH RYAN CABRERA Acclaimed Singer-Songwriter Ferras Opening For Ryan Cabrera Beginning June 1st in Baltimore

Capitol Music Group debut artist Ferras has confirmed a month-long series of tour dates opening for fellow singer-songwriter Ryan Cabrera. Ferras will join Cabrera starting June 1st in Baltimore, MD through June 24th in Milwaukee, WI (full schedule below).

The lead single “Hollywood’s Not America” from Ferras’ debut album Aliens & Rainbows (Capitol Records) became an instant hit after it played as the exit song during the Hollywood elimination phase of television ratings champ American Idol, early in the spring. Over 240,000 digital downloads have been sold online during the song’s eleven-week Billboard Hot 100 chart run, and “Hollywood’s Not America” has also hit the Top 20 in the adult-targeted Hot AC radio format.

“I love playing live shows and having the opportunity to share my music with people,” said Ferras, who acknowledges Elton John, David Bowie, Queen and The Beatles among the central influences of his music. “I’m excited to be a part of Ryan Cabrera’s tour.”

Since the April 1st release of Aliens & Rainbows, produced by The Matrix (Avril Lavigne, Jason Mraz, Korn) with Gary Clark (Natalie Imbruglia, Lloyd Cole), the 25 year old Ferras has been a constant presence on the live stage and television screen. He has toured nationally with A Fine Frenzy, headlined a high school tour in conjunction with Nickelodeon’s The N, and performed numerous radio shows, including an electrifying performance in front of 17,000 at New York’s Z-100 “Zootopia” show, along with The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Jesse McCartney, New Kids On The Block and Sara Bareilles. Among his many regional and national television appearances are performing slots on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Today show as well as CBS’ The Early Show. In addition to the dates with Ryan Cabrera, Ferras will continue his series of radio promos (schedule below), and will appear at Lollapalooza on August 2nd, and at the Halsted Market Days Festival on August 10th in Chicago.

RADIOHEAD: THE BEST OF
DVD TO BE RELEASED JUNE 3 BY CAPITOL/EMI

Companion To Radiohead: Best Of CD, Special Edition 2-CD, Quadruple Vinyl LP & Digital Releases Features 21 Videos, Including 9 Making DVD Release Debuts

Parlophone Records and Capitol Records have announced that the much anticipated CD, 2-CD, quadruple vinyl LP and digital release, Radiohead: The Best Of will also be available June 3 as a DVD video collection. The collection’s details are announced today. 21 videos are featured on the new Radiohead: The Best Of DVD, including “Just,” “Street Spirit,” “Karma Police,” “Paranoid Android,” “No Surprises,” “Knives Out,” “Pyramid Song” and “There There.” The DVD also includes the more experimental visuals created for Radiohead songs not released as singles, and nine videos make their DVD release debuts on the new collection.

The story of Radiohead is not solely about the band’s extraordinary music. Radiohead has also made some of the greatest music videos of all time. Working with music video’s most innovative directors, including Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, Jamie Thraves, Shynola, Jake Scott, Sophie Muller, Grant Gee, and others, the band’s commitment to visual creativity has resulted in some of the most memorable, groundbreaking and influential music videos in the history of the medium.

Radiohead: The Best Of documents the band’s huge contribution to music video as an artform. The DVD features Radiohead’s earliest videos, including “Creep,” which helped to propel the band’s first single into a massive hit in the U.S., as well as “Anyone Can Play Guitar” and “Pop Is Dead.”

Two different videos made for “High And Dry,” the band’s first single from The Bends, are included, and the glossy production for “Fake Plastic Trees,” directed by Jake Scott (son of Ridley) when the band was still arguably better-known in the States than in the U.K.

Also included is the run of great videos which began when Radiohead chose to work with young English director Jamie Thraves, who had little to his credit other than several acclaimed film school shorts. The result was the band’s first all-time classic video, for “Just.” The genius of “Just” lies in its unforgettable final twist, and the video broke new ground in the way it subtly fused narrative with the band’s performance. Thraves, who has since directed more acclaimed videos, including Coldplay’s “The Scientist,” and movies (The Lowdown and the forthcoming Cry Of The Owl), also edited two other versions – one all-narrative, another all-performance – in case it didn’t work. “Just” has won awards and has been named in numerous best ever videos polls – and it was recently parodied in the recent video for Mark Ronson’s cover version.

Radiohead’s next video would also win ‘greatest ever’ acclaim. For “Street Spirit,” the band teamed with top music video and commercials director Jonathan Glazer. His work includes the video for Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity,” the Guinness “Surfer” commercial (voted the best ad of all time) and he would then go on to direct movies like Sexy Beast. Glazer’s rigorous approach and intensity gelled with Thom Yorke, and the result was a mesmerizing and groundbreaking video. Glazer captured the hypnotic beauty of “Street Spirit” in his understated use of special effects and, in particular, high-speed photography. The still-astonishing trailer park-set video became a big award-winner, including Best Video of 1996 at British music video award show The CADS. Glazer later revealed that Thom Yorke encouraged him to simplify his ideas for the video until the slow motion footage became the backbone of the piece.

Radiohead and Glazer worked together again two years later on the video for “Karma Police.” With the director preparing to shoot his first movie, the result was suitably cinematic: it’s shot from the viewpoint of a Cadillac driver bearing down on a man staggering down a road, with Thom Yorke in the car’s back seat. Something bad is going to happen, but there’s a scorching twist in the tale. As with “Street Spirit,” the perfectionist Glazer insisted on re-shoots before being satisfied with the results.

In between the two Glazer videos came an inspired departure for the accompaniment to the hugely anticipated first single from third Radiohead album OK Computer, “Paranoid Android.” Instead of commissioning an established video director, the band invited Swedish animator Magnus Carlsson to make a surreal animated adventure featuring his cartoon slacker character Robin.

The band became enthusiastic patrons of a new wave of groundbreaking animation. Radiohead’s experimental album Kid A produced no singles or videos, but instead, 10-to 40-second animated ‘blipverts’ – many created by Shynola, a four-man group of computer animators not long out of film school. When Radiohead released the more accessible Amnesiac, Shynola directed the video for “Pyramid Song,” a superb ultimately devastating animation: a diver plunges into the sea from a concrete island to reveal a city, his home, submerged below.

Radiohead subsequently collaborated with pioneering CGI artists Johnny Hardstaff, who was given the freedom to make a single video for two tracks, “Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors” and “Like Spinning Plates” (retitled “Push Pulk/Spinning Plates”), and Alex Rutterford, who created a computer-generated Thom Yorke for the promo for “Go To Sleep.”

Radiohead has often given talented directors a crucial career opportunity to prove themselves, with often stunning results. Some of the work has challenged viewers’ expectations of one of the world’s biggest bands, including Ed Holdsworth’s hypnotic collection of urban landscapes for “Sit Down Stand Up.” But the band has also given established directors the chance to express themselves in a different way.

Legendary video director Michel Gondry had just made his first movie when he directed the video for “Knives Out,” a characteristically awe-inspiring, one-shot video tracking the breakdown of a relationship, including a human version of the board game Operation. And the beautiful, ghostly feel of “I Might Be Wrong” was created by Sophie Muller, more generally found directing videos for the likes of Gwen Stefani and Beyoncé, shooting Thom and Jonny Greenwood on a no-lens pinhole camera.

While Radiohead’s later videos may have tended toward the leftfield, the video for “There There,” the first single from Hail To The Thief, directed by Bristol-based animation director Chris Hopewell, was arguably the band’s most popular and widely-seen video for years when it arrived in 2003. Part-Bagpuss, part-Brothers Grimm, it won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Art Directed Video that year.

Radiohead has encouraged directors to interpret their music in a singular fashion, and Thom Yorke in particular has been prepared to go to great lengths to realise a great concept, as demonstrated with “No Surprises,” the final video from OK Computer. Director Grant Gee, who was working with the band on their acclaimed documentary Meeting People Is Easy, persuaded Thom into a helmet that fills up with water. It’s an unforgettable (and potentially very dangerous) one-shot video as the viewer watches Thom hold his breath.

The new Radiohead: The Best Of DVD shows that Radiohead’s music videos have mirrored the band’s inspired musical progression with rare and extraordinary visual achievement.

Multinational surreal pop group Sunny Day Sets Fire announces limited U.S. dates surrounding premiere of Paramount Pictures documentary American Teen featuring songs from the band’s forthcoming debut.

Multinational surreal pop group Sunny Day Sets Fire announces limited U.S. dates surrounding premiere of Paramount Pictures documentary American Teen featuring songs from the band’s forthcoming debut.

Sunny Day Sets Fire has announced a very limited stateside engagement in late June, when the band of musicians from many lands and backgrounds will perform a handful of shows surrounding the premiere party for American Teen, a documentary on seniors in an Indiana high school and their various cliques. The Paramount Pictures release features songs by Sunny Day Sets Fire, which the band will perform at a private launch party as well as select venues and radio appearances around Los Angeles. See complete show details below. These will be the band’s only U.S. dates until the fall 2008 CMJ New Music Festival.

Ostensibly a band founded in London, Sunny Day Sets Fire is a group with many homelands, many talents and many sounds. The quintet’s unique brand of hummable surreal pop is a perfect soundtrack to summertime that could perhaps best be compared to artists like Blonde Redhead, The Flaming Lips, Architecture in Helsinki and Band Of Horses. The mid-summer release of its IAmSound full length debut Summer Palace will certainly establish Sunny Day Sets Fire as a reference point unto itself.

In a swirling event of coincidence and musical attraction, band founders Onyee and Mauro found each other between paychecks and popcorn. Both were ushers at their local repertoire Chelsea cinema in London when they realized their similar palates for bands, artists and sounds exacted a nice beginning for some collaborative efforts. Ideas occurred and the two recruited friends to fulfill orchestral duties. An act was born. Sunny Day Sets Fire dug their toes into the ground, and got pumped for the future comings of their psych-pop band life.

It is a landscape that is both rich and broad. Any band can drown themselves in old vinyl for some choice inspiration, but the Sunny Day worldly influence and background provoke a top spirit and caliber to their topsy-turvy psychedelic stack-up. Collectively, the band hails from Hong Kong, Italy, Sardinia, Canada, and of course, London. The result is something of a pop hybrid where 60’s beach rock collides with new patents. Catchy melodies spill into astral instrumentation and kaleidoscopic guitar tangents. These tunes are very much alive and optical.

Lead guitarist Max, deriving from Sardinia, says it best: “Our music is the result of the clash of five different backgrounds that in most cases, come out in a very unconscious way. Any input coming out from anyone of us triggers something from the musical and visual imagery of the rest of the band members. [This] adds to initial ideas of the songs and in a way that often transform them into something a bit different.”

Mauro, originally from Italy, is the lead vocalist, 12-string guitarist and occasional drummer of Sunny Day Sets Fire. He cites director Harmony Korine, black metal bands and Surrealism as personal influences, and acts as the band’s main songwriter and composer. When his rounded and endearing chorals flirt with the whimsical electronics, the result is snappy and fun. The rest follows as effortlessly as a picnic.

After Onyee (a Hong King native) and Mauro found each other at that fateful cinema, the two performed as a duo for a handful of exhibition openings and artist video projects. Onyee contributed her appreciation for Velvet Underground, 60’s Motown girl groups, and Leonard Cohen, as well as the “pure memories and emotions you get from watching gigs, [and] from looking at a work of art or performances.”

Evolution knows how to ignite. When Mauro whipped up a set of songs with a mint-fresh direction, Onyee (sporting her talents with back-up vocals, drums, synth and glockenspiel) got motivated and pulled Max from shaking cocktails to play lead guitar. Now things were rolling, now music was being made, gigs were being played, and bands like Sunny Day Sets Fire were really covering ground. A year and a half later, Ed joined on the bass, the band’s only London native.

So, Ed, what influences you? “Touring and the exposure to new sounds, attitudes and altitudes. Fearless freaks. Michel Gondry… James Jamerson… Paul McCartney and The Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers… Salvador Dali.” Ed’s addition adds another layer of novelty and complexity.

But that wasn’t enough. “We needed a Timpani player! So thanks the almighty we found Matthew,” Mauro says. “We started playing as a four-piece and after having some fun, guess what? We wanted to have much more fun.”

In addition to his percussion roles, Matt the Canadian toils in synth and backing vocals. He notes favorites in Sonic Youth, Television, Stereolab, Chuck Berry and more. Daydream Nation “taught me about what a band should be.” Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs “taught me that music could be like a book” and Television’s Marquee Moon “taught me about musicianship and striving for excellence.” Surely, he nested into the forward-thinking Sunny Day Sets Fire just fine.

In the summer of 2006, the band signed to American indie label IAMSOUND Records with the four-song Brainless EP released later in the year. On February 26th, 2008, IAMSOUND issued a remix EP featuring CSS and XXXChange from Spank Rock, The Cool Kids and Mad Decent/Diplo. The EP has been wrangling in excitement for Summer Palace, the Sunny Day full-length set for July 8th, 2008. One can only begin to envision the sorts of cakewalks Sunny Day Sets Fire crafted for these upcoming 14 tracks. It’s the kind of project you can easily get stoked on.

Yet, no one is as excited as Sunny Day Sets Fire. Like Mauro says, “Here we are now. The fantastic five looking for adventures in the sublime jungle of frequencies.”

People will and do often ask “where exactly are the Golden Animals from?” when hearing their distinctive sound from their debut album FREE YOUR MIND AND WIN A PONY, out on HAPPYPARTS RECORDINGS on AUGUST 25TH 2008. In a nutshell, Linda grew up in Northern Sweden and Tommy in Baltimore, Maryland, they met in Europe, eloped to Brooklyn then ventured west to the desert.

After meeting then recording an EP in Brooklyn in 2006, the couple soon became tired of the hipster drenched sidewalks and music spots in their local “hood” of Williamsburg and therefore decided to find their own place to belong to and embrace rather than waiting for a scene to wrap its arms and around them. They dreamt of a place away from the horrendously hip and headed for the sun. Tommy and Linda bought an old but trustworthy van and headed west in 2007, out to the desert in California, where they began to write their first full-length album and escape the trials of the New York City life.

Not really knowing what to expect, they had their goals set on some vague ideal; maybe a house? With a pool? And for free? Impossible you say? Well it happened, and only 2 days after reaching LA they stumbled across a posting on Craigslist, for a house sitter by the Salton Sea.

“We had no idea where this was, but replied to the ad and agreed to take the job as long as we could play rock & roll music as loud as possible whenever we want.” Since it was the hottest part of the desert and they arrived for the summer months, every sane person who could leave the area had left, avoiding temperatures that can exceed 120, the couple then began to record their masterpiece.

From a concrete jungle of Williamsburg to this. Five months went by and many mind blowing things happened to them both during this time. “We saw boiling rivers, rainbow mountains, screaming red sunsets, holes in the ground puking up mud- all that naturally transpires when nature thinks no one is looking.”

Another hugely inspiring and contributing factor towards the writing of this album had a lot to do with the owner of the house, who had left a a great collection of 60’s rock and flower punk records. The ideal introduction to the West coast and its musical legacy. Feeling as if they were miles away from civilization and society and placed in a time of its own; Also, the man they happened to be house-sitting for had written a book called Children Of The Sun, which they think everyone should read. It explains the history of natural living before it became pop in the 60’s.”One of the things that is so important about this book is that it showed that the ideals of the 60’s didn’t only exist in that era”. FREE YOUR MIND AND WIN A PONY soon began to take on a life of it’s own and the GOLDEN ANIMALS was born.

The GOLDEN ANIMALS’s brand of blues is built on austere beats, slide guitars and fuzzed-up vocals, here produced by CHRIS CODY (TV ON THE RADIO, YEAH YEAH YEAHS, MASSIVE ATTACK) and mixed by THOM MONAHAN (PERNICE BROTHERS, GARY LOURIS, DEVENDRA BANHART). It’s the sound they were born to make – if you believe the fortune-teller whose mysterious predictions were the catalyst for the formation of the band back in the day when their worlds collided in a cosy European Cafe, one very rainy evening.

The band’s chief inspiration is the blues, be it the foundation blues artists of the ’20s and 30’s or the interpretations of the genre created by The Doors, Cream, Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.” Those early blues recordings are the fountain,” they say. “Even in 200 years, people will find completely new ways to create all within those rules and algorithms.”

The album was written in five months of total isolation while Tommy and Linda lived alone on a Californian desert ranch, visited only once a week by the owner of the land, a fellow ’60s rock fanatic. In 115-degree heat, the duo survived on raw food and wrote and practiced whenever and wherever they wanted. “We were in a place that was dead as far as society was concerned and tremendously alive as far as pure nature was concerned,” they say. “It was empty and quiet. There weren’t any fast food places for 45 minutes in either direction, and the only sign of civilization was a lazy old freight train that would creep along in the distance.”

A West Coast sonic breakaway from the modern California freak-folk scene, GOLDEN ANIMALS are a pure rock and roll duo with a full-blown classic sound that’s bigger than their stripped-back gear should allow. This is the now scene, and where it happening. You’ll find them on the path of the moonlight mile.

Since the March release of the band’s self-titled Skiddco/Virgin debut album, the featured track “Addicted” has zoomed to the No. 2 position nationally at active rock radio, also rising in the Top 10 at mainstream rock, and the Top 20 at the alternative rock format. The Saving Abel album, increasing in sales in each of its four weeks of release, has also charted at No. 2 in Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart of developing artists. They are the Clear Channel radio chain’s New! rock band of the month.

Online, the Saving Abel MySpace.com page has amassed over 1.2 million song streams, increasing by thousands daily. A special unrated version of the “Addicted” video premiered on Playboy.com in March. The video reached #5 on the iTunes video chart. Buzz has also followed the band as frontman Jared Weeks has been reported to be dating Spike TV Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling star Angelina Love.

Saving Abel – named after the Biblical sibling of Cain – was formed by Jared Weeks and guitarist Jason Null in 2004 in their hometown of Corinth, Mississippi. Now based in Memphis, Tennessee, the band’s complete lineup includes guitarist Scott Bartlett, bassist Eric Taylor and drummer Blake Dixon. Combining influences of southern rock, hard rock and mainstream alternative music with an irresistible, rowdy work-hard, play-hard attitude, the band’s first break came in 2005, when Skidd Mills (12 Stones, Saliva, Submersed) produced their self-titled EP.

Jex Thoth throws down psychedelic hard rock gauntlet with debut album, transnational band features skull-thwacking riffs, gloriously soaring female vocals, former Wooden Wand leader James Jackson Toth on bass and guitar.

Jex Thoth, a psychedelic hard rock band named after its enigmatic singer, has announced the release of its self-titled debut album courtesy of Swedish imprint I Hate Records. The transnational quintet features a bevy of skull-thwacking riffs and folk-tinged tones supporting Thoth’s gloriously soaring voice. The band also includes the impeccable musicianship and creativity of former Wooden Wand leader James Jackson Toth (Grim Jim) on bass and guitar, backing the frontwoman who had previously lent her remarkable harmonies to his former group. Likewise, members Silas Paine (guitars / bouzouki / flute), Zodiac (keyboards / studio wizardry) and Johnny Dee (drums, percussion) gathered from fields afar, solidify the Jex Thoth totem pole.

Jex Thoth does not fall into predetermined categories. Its sound is far from “stoner rock” or cookie-cutter doom often associated with similarly thunderous metal-leaning urchins. Rather, Jex Thoth is a bright shining phoenix rising from the drudgery of predictable metal formalism. Taking its influences from sources obvious (early Danzig, Ozzy) and not so obvious (avant garde chanteuse Catherine Ribeiro, over-the-rainbow psych-folk savant Bobb Trimble), the band, led by the beautiful and commanding goddess Jex, follows its muse wherever it leads them. The band is not afraid to take cues from progressive rock and folk, and the band’s debut album (which follows an EP released under the name Totem) marks a huge step forward for Jex Thoth. From the vociferous opener “Nothing Left To Die,” a statement of intent that begins with Jex singing “You think you know me / but you won’t believe your eyes,” to an ambitious cover of Bobb Trimble’s psychedelic masterwork “When The Raven Calls,” Jex Thoth is out to prove they are peerless when it comes to intrepid, bone-shaking rock and roll. Reverent while maintaining a defiantly original sound, Jex Thoth embraces all that is good about the past and shuttles it defiantly into the future.

MICKEY HART BAND FEATURING STEVE KIMOCK AND GEORGE PORTER JR. CONFIRM SUMMER TOUR RUN RHYTHM DEVILS CONCERT EXPERIENCE DVD DUE THIS SUMMER

MICKEY HART BAND FEATURING STEVE KIMOCK AND GEORGE PORTER JR. CONFIRM SUMMER TOUR RUN RHYTHM DEVILS CONCERT EXPERIENCE DVD DUE THIS SUMMER

Grateful Dead drummer and percussionist Mickey Hart will launch a 20 city tour this summer including appearances at many of the nation’s premiere music festivals. The outing comes on the heels of the Shout! Factory releases of The Mickey Hart Collection and the Rhythm Devils Concert Experience DVDs due this summer. The Mickey Hart Band will feature Steve Kimock on guitar, George Porter Jr on bass, Jen Durkin on vocals, Walfredo Reyes Jr. on drums, and talking drum master Sikiru.

After headlining appearances at Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa on June 6 and Wakarusa on June 8, the group will head out on an 18 city trek beginning July 3 at the Rothbury Festival in Michigan and continuing through July 24 at 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota. The shows will feature the Robert Hunter-penned songs debuted by the Rhythm Devils in 2006 including “Fountains of Wood,” “The Center” and “Your House,” in addition to Grateful Dead staples such as “New Speedway Boogie” and “Fire on The Mountain.”

The two disc Rhythm Devils DVD filmed in Chicago during their fall tour in 2006 is packaged in a hard bound book and features all of the Rhythm Devils originals as well as a stunning version of “7 Seconds” all in 5.1 surround sound. Disc two offers a combination of interviews and behind the scenes footage giving fans the opportunity to watch the band rehearse.

In addition, Shout! Factory has just released The Mickey Hart Collection which includes the Grammy winning Planet Drum, At The Edge, Diga Rhythm Band, Superlingua, and Mystery Box. Hart’s Planet Drum won the first ever World Music Grammy and still stands as one of the genre’s benchmark albums. Mickey reunited with some of his Planet Drum band mates including tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, to form Global Drum Project in 2007 and released a record to critical acclaim followed by an extensive tour.

Mickey has kept quite busy over the past few years including tours with Hydra, Rhythm Devils, and Global Drum Project in addition to continuing his work with the Library of Congress. He also performed at Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s inauguration in 2007 and more recently appeared at the “Deadheads For Obama” event along with fellow Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. On April 20, Mickey headlined Golden Gate Park with a mass drum ensemble including Tommy Lee, John Fishman, Joan Baez, and Bob Weir in celebration of Earth Day as part of the Green Apple Music Festival.

The summer run will take the band to festivals, theatres, and outdoor events across the East Coast and Midwest beginning July 3rd at Rothbury Festival and continuing on to Milwaukee’s Summerfest, Lakeview Music Festival, and Nelson Ledges rounding out July 4th weekend. East Coast stops include Great South Bay Festival on Long Island, Penn’s Peak in PA, and Thursday in the Square in Buffalo. Select tour dates will offer pre-sale and VIP tickets which include a special after-show meet and greet with Mickey.
