THE VERVE – FORTH NEW ALBUM OUT NOW (On Your Own)

#2 on the AIMS chart , #4 on iTunes,
# 5 debut on the Street Pulse daily sales chart and #6 on the Amazon chart!

LOOK FOR RICHARD ASHCROFT’S EXCLUSIVE US INTERVIEW WITH USA TODAY, THURSDAY AUGUST 28TH

PLUS, REVIEWS IN PEOPLE MAGAZINE, BLENDER, SPIN, ROLLING STONE, LA TIMES, NEW YORK TIMES, NEW YORK MAGAZINE, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, NEWSDAY, ASSOCIATED PRESS, THE ONION AND MANY MORE……….

THE VERVE TALK ABOUT THE SINGLE, ‘LOVE IS NOISE’ HERE:

“Balancing McCabe’s love of athletic jamming with Ashcroft’s bardic aspirations, “Forth” is centered on slowly building jams that pay off in transcendent choruses…” Los Angeles Times

“…the Verve presents a miasma of sound, full of swirling guitars and gurgling effects that evolve to find new hooks as they go.” New York Daily News

“Ashcroft and his bandmates continue the mission they abandoned on 1997’s Urban Hymns, wedding classic-rock swagger to dream-pop swoon in ten instantly recognizable tracks…. Are the Verve back? Maybe. Definitely.” Spin

“Forth is that rare comeback record—unafraid to show its age, and better for it.” Blender

“The Verve have reunited to release Forth, their fourth studio album of superior, psychedelic magnificence.” Vanity Fair

“….the trancelike gallop of bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury; guitarist Nick McCabe’s creamy distortion and ascending rings of tremolo and feedback; singer Richard Ashcroft’s drawling incantation, the songs skirt standard verse-chorus form…. chord patterns that swirl and mutate with slow assurance.”
Rolling Stone

“….the album will satisfy those wondering whether the band can achieve the nosebleed heights of its formidable back catalog (psst, it does). The swirling groover, “Sit And Wonder”, the driving gospel rock of “Love Is Noise” and the liquid gold that’s streaked through “Appalachian Springs” are as good as anything The Verve has recorded before….” The Onion A.V Club

“Current Verve fans will appreciate what took a decade to produce, and if newcomers allow themselves to absorb ‘Forth’, the Verve may just get their second chance.” UR Reporter Chicago

FRESHKILLS – SELF-RELEASED, SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 2nd!

FRESHKILLS – SELF-RELEASED, SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 2nd!

Freshkills – yes, one word – are a five-piece tour guide to the lives, awkward conversations and head games that play out deep into the night in New York City’s dark bars and messy bedrooms. Each protagonist is motivated by sordid appetites, like moths attracted to blackness. Each song has the sound and feel of a mini-apocalypse.

The band comprises of vocalist Zachary Lipez, guitarists Johnny Rauberts and Timothy Murray, bassist Mitchell Jordan and drummer Jim Paradise. Upon listening, influences that spring to mind are Nation of Ulysses and Drive Like Jehu, as the band combines the lyrical flair of the former and the chops of the latter. Lipez’s red-lining vocals are infused with paranoia, aggravation and twisted vulnerability. The rhythms – though rarely slow – are controlled, ominous and sometimes hypnotic. The twin-guitar work is droning and breathtaking, and leads are rare.

Freshkills’ first album, the poetic, jarring, ‘Creeps and Lovers’ (Arclight Records 2006) , was produced by NYC hardcore stalwart Joel Hamilton and earned rave reviews from ‘scene-approved’ publications such as Vice (8.5 out of 10) and Punk Planet (“refreshing … idiosyncratic”). The band recently completed their second, self-released and self-titled album, produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, The Locust, Two Gallants). Emphasizing hooks and streamlined song structures, without sacrificing any of their dissonance, dark sarcasm, or cutting social commentary, the result is brand new material that is immediate, unsettling and lasting.

Freshkills have performed live alongside Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, Fiery Furnaces, The Giraffes, Agent Orange, Kid Congo, Foreign Islands, Bellmer Dolls, Chinese Stars, Stalkers, Bad Wizard, Made Out Of Babies, Demander and a wealth of other prominent acts. They will be embarking on an extensive tour in support of the new album, with upcoming shows in NYC and Brooklyn and across the States this fall.

“They nail all the cool-kid pre-reqs so well: jittery punk-fuzz guitars, baroque vocals, barely decipherable lyrics, natty outfits. If that doesn’t make you totally hate them, well then, you’ll probably love them.” Time Out New York

“Thunderous sexy bass over math-y rhythms and a saucy twin-guitar attack… Good stuff!!!” Village Voice

“Brimming with turmoil and anger while keeping hold of a hip swaggering shake. This Brooklyn Quintet is the s**t!” Ghetto Blaster

“Hours of practice, a dedication to songwriting, and a sizeable budget. These are all things that are less important to a good record than having a cool older brother – someone to break your Collective Soul tapes over your stupid head, as the older brothers of the Freshkills clearly did, and say “Hey you stupid idiot, here is Drive Like Jehu, Jesus Lizard, and Nation of Ulysses. Now quit being such a herb”. Vice

THE NOTWIST TO RELEASE BONELESS 7 INCH INCLUDES EXCLUSIVE PANDA BEAR REMIX ON TOUR OCTOBER 10

THE NOTWIST TO RELEASE BONELESS 7 INCH INCLUDES EXCLUSIVE PANDA BEAR REMIX ON TOUR OCTOBER 10

On October 7th, Domino Records is set to release “Boneless”, a new 7″ from German trio The Notwist. The 7″ will be released in physical format only and features the album version of “Boneless” from this year’s The Devil, You + Me, plus an exclusive remix by Animal Collective’s Panda Bear. The band will also be heading out for their first North American tour in three years in October, with Dosh opening the first leg of the tour, and Jel and Odd Nosdam opening dates from from Denver to Los Angeles.

The Devil, You, + Me is an album driven by an individual and collective restlessness, something that manifests itself both in the endlessly inventive musical construction and the submerged lyrical narrative that hits you from the astonishing opening “Good Lies” all the way through to the fragile end-piece “Gone Gone Gone”. The lyrics explore a world of uneasy being, structured like incantations formed to ward off the inescapable cycle of life and death, falling back on archetypes, religion, God and the devil himself.

KIERAN HEBDEN AND STEVE REID RECORD ODE TO NEW YORK CITY NYC SET FOR RELEASE ON NOVEMBER 18, 2008 TWO RARE LIVE DATES ANNOUNCED

KIERAN HEBDEN AND STEVE REID RECORD ODE TO NEW YORK CITY NYC SET FOR RELEASE ON NOVEMBER 18, 2008 TWO RARE LIVE DATES ANNOUNCED

Domino Records is pleased to announce the release of NYC on November 18, 2008. The album was recorded by Hebden (also known by the name Four Tet) and Reid over two days in February, 2008. The choice of the recording location and studio is at the heart of what the new record is about. Think of a studio that’s seen Missy Elliot, Miles Davis, The Roots, Chic, Steve Reich, Ron Carter, and Joe Henderson record classic sides, then try to imagine a duo whose sound is so open-ended and original that it would be a surprisingly short step to connect them to anyone of those names – a sound that fuses the digital slash-and-staple of sampling and the irresistible momentum of jazz drumming, all without ever forgetting that there’s such a place as the dancefloor. The studio is Avatar, in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen; the duo is Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid.

“Steve wanted to do something with the sound and feel of his home city,” explains Kieran. The whole set, down to the choice of tracks and their sequencing, was influenced by New York City’s (in)famous energies. “NYC is where giants walked the streets, the greatest musicians in the world could be heard on any given night; James Brown, Coltrane, Hendricks, Dylan, Sarah Vaughn and on and on. New York City is always in the rhythms” adds Steve.

“When I first started going to New York with Steve he showed me a different side to the city. He told me endless stories about the music that has come from there that he experienced, about life growing up there, and he also introduced me to old friends and musicians who know another city than the younger generation I know.” Explains Kieran.

“Everything we did when making the record from choosing the studio to the food we ate to mixing the sounds to the order of tracks was done with New York in mind,” he continues. “The artwork for the album is made from pictures taken during the recording. The titles of the songs come from places where Steve is from and my visits. “Between B & C” is where I stayed with a friend during the recording and “arrival” and “departure” are there because New York has only ever been about a week long trip for me that I make a few times each year. I know the city in short bursts.”

The duo’s impressionistic take on their New York surroundings comes out in a language that’s got increasingly developed as the two build up their history. With NYC, Kieran and Steve are already onto their fourth album together in three years, not to mention Kieran’s contributions to Steve Reid Ensemble records in the same time (such as this year’s Daxaar for Domino). This continuous flow of collaboration and work has blossomed into its most satisfying shapes yet. While their earliest sets were instant compositions, Kieran and Steve went into Avatar with a number of themes already mapped out, and road-tested over the course of the previous year’s live shows.

Kieran is credited as playing simply “electronics”, but that doesn’t do justice to the sound collages he whips up here. Sampled fragments of analogue synth, melodica, Kieran’s own electric guitar playing, white noise, all are turned into riffs that are sent to buzz around the central motor that is Steve Reid’s extraordinary drumming. The “talking drum” is a fundamental part of West African musical tradition; but if drums can talk, Steve shows they can sing too, such is the bell-like clarity of his tone and touch. With its garrulous give and take, its musical questions and answers, NYC is Kieran and Steve’s best work yet. The only question it leaves the listener with at the close is: what’s the next destination?

KINGS OF LEON DEBUT NEW MUSIC VIDEO FOR “SEX ON FIRE” NEW ALBUM “ONLY BY THE NIGHT” IN STORES AND ONLINE ON SEPTEMBER 23 ON RCA RECORDS

Kings of Leon are proud to announce the debut of their new music video for the song “Sex on Fire.” As the video for the single off the band’s soon-to-be released album “Only By the Night,” “Sex on Fire” (Directed by Sophie Muller) was recently filmed in Los Angeles and is a well-crafted body of work that places the band within a brooding storyline.

Set for a Sept. 23 release date, the new album, “Only By The Night,” was recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN, and was produced by Angelo Petraglia, Jacquire King and the band as well. “Only By The Night” is a bold and expansive sonic statement that looks set to solidify Kings of Leon’s position as one of the most important international acts of 2008 and beyond. It follows rapidly in the footsteps of the band’s previous albums, “Youth And Young Manhood,” “Aha Shake Heartbreak,” and “Because Of The Times,” all of which have quickly established them as one of the most prolific and acclaimed acts around.

LILA DOWNS ANNOUNCES SEPT. 2 RELEASE OF DIVERSE NEW ALBUM SHAKE AWAY ACCLAIMED MEXICAN-AMERICAN SINGER SET TO EMBARK UPON 10-CITY U.S. TOUR

LILA DOWNS ANNOUNCES SEPT. 2 RELEASE OF DIVERSE NEW ALBUM SHAKE AWAY ACCLAIMED MEXICAN-AMERICAN SINGER SET TO EMBARK UPON 10-CITY U.S. TOUR

Exploring and expressing Mexico’s rich culture has been a lifelong passion for Lila Downs. On Shake Away, Downs takes listeners on a journey that’s both intensely personal and vividly universal. Recorded in New York and Mexico City, the songs range from the pointed “Minimum Wage” to the mystical “Silent Thunder” to a cover of Lucinda Williams’ “I Envy The Wind” in English and Spanish (“Yo Envidio El Viento”) versions.

On Shake Away Lila invites a group of special guests, including the legendary Argentinean singer Mercedes Sosa on a duet of her song “Tierra de Luz” (Land of Light); longtime amigo Ruben Albarran from Café Tacuba joins Lila on “Perro Negro’ (“Black Dog”); and on a cover of “Black Magic Woman, Lila switches between Spanish and English with the help of acclaimed singer/guitarist and label mate, Raul Midon.

To bring her vision and songs on Shake Away to fruition, along with her seven-man band, La Misteriosa, and producers Paul Cohen (also her collaborator and husband), Aneiro Tano and Brian Lynch, Downs plays guitar and percussion. The band utilizes traditional instruments including accordion, harp and clarinet. The trumpet, trombone and tuba appear in several arrangements, bringing the sound somewhere between Mexico and New Orleans.

Though many new songs address the heated topics of immigration, political justice, and transformation, Downs’ vulnerability, compassion and humor are also clear, her siren song irresistible on Shake Away. From the Beat poet-style of ‘Truth” to the spare dolorous “Yo Envidio El Vento”– which is followed up the almost-carnival atmosphere of “Perro Negro”–Shake Away is a triumph.

With a voice that is varied in color and range, Lila Downs cuts a striking figure live as well – she embodies the spirit of her music with an emotion-drenched physicality. She will be on tour this fall in support of Shake Away (dates below).

Birdmonster – The Iditarod video

“The Iditarod” was made using a technique called SLAM (SLide, Animation, Movies) coined by its developer – Greg Crane. Not too different from your standard stop-motion animation, SLAM takes the aesthetics to a new arty level. 95% of the video was created using digital still photos from a professional/high-end camera. Approximately 1800 shots were painstakingly and meticulously pasted together to establish that “motion”.
