N.A.S.A. To Tour North America This February ‘The Spirit of Apollo’ To Be Released 2/17 On Anti-

N.A.S.A. (North America/South America), and their worldwide debut The Spirit of Apollo is set to be released on Anti- on February 17, 2009. N.A.S.A is an ongoing creative collaboration between two lifelong music aficionados, Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon, and their friends, friends of friends and musical heroes. The pair will tour the US and Canada starting late next month.

While N.A.S.A. stands for North America/South America and contains a number of superstar artists from both coasts of the US, it is about as far from a tension-building geographical showdown as a record can get. Rather, The Spirit of Apollo was born with the righteous goal of bringing people together through music and art, and that is exactly what masterminds Squeak E, Clean and DJ Zegon have done.

Unexpected collaborations abound on the eighteen-track release. Tom Waits growls over Kool Keith, Karen O taunts while Ol’ Dirty Bastard gives shout-outs to Wu Tang and N.A.S.A. from the grave, and David Byrne, Chuck D and others expound on the evils of “Money.” In spite of the range of performers, the pairings seem organic, inspired and make perfect sense on the first listen, never coming off as ironic or impulsive.

THE BOXER REBELLION SET TO DIGITALLY RELEASE SOPHOMORE ALBUM UNION ON JANUARY 11, 2009 SINGLE EVACUATE TO BE NAMED GLOBAL SINGLE OF THE WEEK ON ITUNES BEGINNING JANUARY 13

THE BOXER REBELLION SET TO DIGITALLY RELEASE SOPHOMORE ALBUM “UNION” ON JANUARY 11, 2009 SINGLE “EVACUATE” TO BE NAMED “GLOBAL SINGLE OF THE WEEK” ON ITUNES BEGINNING JANUARY 13

“The Boxer Rebellion’s albums are completely non-disposable bodies of work – perfectly balanced in exemplary song-writing, epic performances, and wide-ranging creativity that reward the listener time and time again.” – Stephen Brolan, The Fly

BoxerRebFour years since the birth of their magnificent debut album, EXITS, The Boxer Rebellion digitally release their much-anticipated, self-produced, sophomore record, UNION, on January 11th. In an unprecedented move, iTunes have awarded the band a “Global Single of the Week” spot on January 13th for the track ‘Evacuate’, which will run across every iTunes store on the planet. Mixed by Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Feeder) and mastered by Kevin Metcalfe (U2, Prodigy), UNION has also been awarded the Editor’s Choice album slot by iTunes US which will see it receive main page and front page (Rock/Alt) coverage. Both UNION and EXITS will be available at an introductory price during their first two weeks of release (physical release dates forthcoming).

THE PAST:
Formed in London through a chance meeting between Tennessee native Nathan Nicholson (vox/guitar) and Australian Todd Howe (guitar), the line-up was made complete with college friends Piers Hewitt on drums and Adam Harrison on bass. Following the release of an acclaimed debut EP in 2003, and on the eve of a potentially career-breaking tour with The Killers, Nicholson found himself deftly ill and on life-support, putting the band on indefinite hold.

Post-recovery, the band released limited copies of EXITS, their debut album in 2005 to a rapturous response: Kerrang magazine proclaimed, “If you’re crying out for substance in your music, The Boxer Rebellion are here to soothe your soul,” while the NME stated, “This band can alter your life.” Both The Fly magazine and MusicOMH considered the album “flawless.”

THE PRESENT:
In UNION, The Boxer Rebellion have produced a follow-up of epic proportions that somehow manages to surpass the vertiginous ambitions of its predecessor. While retaining the uniquely charged live sound that has won them a feverishly devoted following throughout Europe, UNION sees the band taking their already lofty ambitions to subliminal levels. From the tribal-drum explosion of opener ‘Flashing Red Light Means Go’, through the wintry atmospherics of enigmatic ‘The Gospel Of Goro Adachi’ to live favourites ‘Evacuate’ and ‘Semi-Automatic’, UNION is an album that transcends convention in a seismic blast of unfettered invention.

Listen to “Evacuate” from UNION:

Currently being championed by KCRW Music Director and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic, Jason Bentley, UNION will be serviced nationwide to non-commercial and college radio stations in the coming weeks.

The band is currently preparing their Spring ’09 tour schedule – dates soon to be released.

Burgundy Records / Sony Music

Superstar singer songwriter powerhouse couple Ashford & Simpson will release a definitive collection of their Greatest Hits, Ashford & Simpson: The Real Thing on CD, DVD and DVD Blu Ray (Burgundy Records / Sony Music). The first-ever live in-concert audio and video recordings are performances by the duo of the hit songs they have written for themselves as well as those made popular by other major music artists. The release date is January 27, 2009.

Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson have had a renowned and celebrated career as performers, songwriters and producers, providing top music artists with some of their biggest hits. The duo boasts 31 singles on the Billboard R&B Chart; six in the Top 10 including their #1 chart hit ‘Solid.’ Ashford & Simpson produced many Gold certified albums, which have come from their numerous in-studio recordings. They are the recipients of a number of awards including ASCAP’s highest honor, The Founder’s Award and the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, which they received in 1999. In 2002 they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

Nick & Valerie met in the choir of Harlem’s White Rock Baptist Church and later married. They went on to enjoy a multifaceted career as the most successful husband & wife songwriting / production team in music history; as notable performers in their own right; and as producers at Motown working with many of the legendary artists at the peak of the iconic label’s success. Ashford & Simpson’s musical influence has impacted worldwide culture over the last four decades.

Legendary and top contemporary music artists that have recorded their songs include; Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson The Supremes, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston and Mary J Blige. Most recently they were given credit for their writing talents on the Amy Winehouse Grammy Award winning CD “Back to Black” for the single ‘Tears Dry On Their Own.’ The track is based on Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s 1967 Motown classic hit ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.’

Ashford & Simpson: The Real Thing DVD & Blu Ray contains over 90 minutes of exciting concert performances with 18 of the Greatest Hits filmed in HD video and surround sound digital audio. The popular New York City spot, Feinstein’s at the Loews Regency, was carefully selected as the setting for its intimacy and the energy a performer and audience can experience only in a nightclub surrounding. Having played larger venues such as Radio City Music Hall, the group realized that a big location could not create special moments. They were right, this unique location created the background for memorable highlights: Valerie’s personal interaction with fans out in the audience as well as a special impromptu performance by Freddie Jackson. Nick spotted Jackson in the audience, walked from the stage to him and handed him a mic. Jackson took the mic and sang along side Nick which the audience ate up.

There is thirty minutes of bonus content which includes a retrospective feature from CBS Sunday Morning, an intimate at-home interview and 2 tracks from a never-before-seen concert of Dr. Maya Angelou and Ashford & Simpson performing together on stage. The DVD features an exclusive premiere of four songs from Ashford & Simpson’s upcoming Broadway musical, “Invisible Life.”

Ashford & Simpson: The Real Thing CD features 14 Greatest Hits with over 65 minutes of live performance as well as a link giving the consumer access to ringtones, audio & video streams, links to purchase recordings of Ashford & Simpson songs that have been recorded by other artists and never-before seen interviews.

THE COATHANGERS ‘SCRAMBLE’ TO SET FOR RELEASE APRIL 7, 2009 ON SUICIDE SQUEEZE RECORDS THIS ALL-FEMALE QUARTET IS READY TO KNOCK-YER-SOCKS OFF

THE COATHANGERS ‘SCRAMBLE’ TO SET FOR RELEASE APRIL 7, 2009 ON SUICIDE SQUEEZE RECORDS THIS ALL-FEMALE QUARTET IS READY TO KNOCK-YER-SOCKS OFF

A non-stop barrage of three-part screams, random swears, splintering tambourines and keyboard- [CMJ’s Hottest Bands: 10 Buzz-Worthy Breakouts 2008] – Rolling Stone

‘Don’t Touch My Shit’ is the jam. When the singer shrieks, “Don’t touch my SHIIIIIIIIIIT!” it really makes you not want to touch her shit.” – VICE

In less than three years, The Coathangers, Julia Kugel (guitar/vocals), Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals), Candice Jones (keyboard/vocals), and Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) have grown from a band of girlfriends buying the cheapest instruments an Atlanta pawn shop could offer, to a group of formidable, adaptable performers. The quartet has shared the stage or toured with bands such as Deerhunter, Atlas Sound, Jay Reatard, The Strange Boys , The Black Lips and The Vivian Girls among others.

Here is the group as a group, an unbreakable unit – the chemistry and magic of all component parts interacting – all the girls or none.

You could look at them and think they’re this way or that, but they will not conform. These are four really different people who have bonded beyond the point of just being friends. You might think you can pin them down, but they don’t care. Their fashion isn’t contrived, their music feels like music for music’s sake because that’s exactly what it is natural, voluntary, spontaneous, impulsive, intuitive and entirely better for it.

“We write all the songs together, trying everything out within a day; we switch instruments, waste time, thrive on building pressure,” says Julia Kugel, “every song is an art project, a starting over, a Scramble.”

Songs like “Bury Me” and “Time Passing” use chanted vocals to approach a kind of personal sloganeering – like Huggy Bear, shot with syncopated voices, but minus the political fury. In “Pussywillow,” the melodic chop of the guitar brings the chorus, “This means nothing to you. It means nothing to me, too. To me, me.” lifting the call-and-response action from bratty disgust to melancholy realization, then back again.

There’s a definitive strength in the scrambled vernacular of the band’s songwriting. Do they bring the party, as rumor has it? Absolutely. It’s an exhausting time. But what these ladies’ have to give, both performing live, and on record, leads to a beautiful exhaustion: a feeling both empty and full, like at the end of intense physical activity, when your body is burned, yet charged.

Strip away the music-biz pretense like that and it leaves you with only the things that are simple, stunning, and true. The Coathangers are one of those things. Start the party.
