NYC songwriter Sam Bisbee’s song “Oxygen” off his new release, Son of a Math Teacher, available now on le Grand Magistery (Pas/Cal, Stars). The video was directed by Tobias Perse. Sam spends a lot of his time writing songs for other people (he has a publishing deal with Nettwerk and composes/arranges songs for film, TV and other artists), and recently celebrated the release of his own, fourth album, Son of a Math Teacher, which features guest appearances from Leona Naess, Lucie Wainwright Roche, Mike Viola, and Liz Tormez.

Giving voice to an extraordinary effort to inspire peace through music and to connect diverse musicians worldwide, including those in conflict regions, Hear Music today announced the April 28 release of Playing For Change – Songs Around the World. The special CD/DVD package, available at participating Starbucks company-operated locations in the U.S. and Canada and at traditional retail worldwide, contains a ten-song audio CD as well as a seven-track DVD, which features five of the songs performed live. The DVD also includes a trailer for the forthcoming PFC documentary and information on the PFC Foundation.

Grammy winning producer/engineer Mark Johnson and his Playing For Change team traveled for a decade with a single minded passion to connect the world though music. Their ambitious journey took them from post-apartheid South Africa, through the ancient sites of the Middle East, to the remote beauty of the Himalayas and beyond. Using innovative mobile technology, the PFC crew filmed and recorded more than 100 musicians, largely outdoors, in parks, plazas and promenades, in doorways, on cobblestone streets and amid hilly pueblos. Each captured performance created a new mix in which essentially the artists are all performing together, albeit hundreds or thousands of miles apart. In a recent interview with PFC founder Johnson, PBS’ Bill Moyers called Playing For Change a remarkable example of “the simple yet transformative power of music…to touch something in each of us.”

Some of the magical moments include Ireland’s Omagh Community Youth Choir singing“Love Rescue Me,” written by U2 and Bob Dylan, and American street musicians Roger Ridley and Grandpa Elliott harmonizing with Clarence Bekker from the Netherlands amid an assembly of artists from Russia, Spain, Venezuela, France and Brazil on the Ben E. King/Leiber & Stoller classic “Stand By Me,” the video of which has already become a YouTube sensation with over seven million views.

Also included is an exhilarating version of the Marley classic “War/No More Trouble”. The track (and video) includes musicians from The Congo, Israel, India, Ireland, South Africa, the U.S., Zimbabwe and Ghana, along with U2’s Bono and Bob Marley. Marley’s “One Love” proved to be an irresistible choice for the producers as well, enlisting American Keb’ Mo’ to sing with performers from India, Israel, Nepal, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

This unparalleled international collaboration of vocalists and musicians are also heard on versions of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Tracy Chapman’s “Talkin’ Bout A Revolution” and Peter Gabriel’s “Biko”.

The relationship between Playing for Change and Hear Music was facilitated by legendary television producer Norman Lear, co-owner of Concord Music Group, which formed the Hear Music label with Starbucks in March 2007.

“With Playing for Change, Mark Johnson and his team have created a movement that transcends language, border and culture, one that brings people together to a common purpose: peace,” states Lear. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity, along with our Starbucks partners, to bring this special project to the people.”

A five-city Playing For Change – Songs Around the World tour featuring some of the musicians on the CD and DVD will kick off at this year’s SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas on Friday March 20th. Other confirmed dates are:

March 23rd Knitting Factory Los Angeles
March 24th Slims San Francisco
March 25th The Showbox at the Market Seattle
March 31st Highline Ballroom New York

About Playing for Change

Playing for Change began a decade ago, the brainchild of Grammy-winning music producer and engineer Mark Johnson. In 1998 Mark teamed with producer Whitney Burditt to create Playing for Change: A Cinematic Discovery of Street Music. Following this award-winning 2004 documentary, PFC saw the April 2008 premiere of its latest film, Playing for Change: Peace Through Music, at the Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary features over 100 musicians around the world, combining their distant voices into a powerful group of collaborations.

Seeing great need in many of the locations where the crew filmed and recorded inspired PFC to establish the Playing for Change Foundation, which provides resources – including facilities, technology, musical instruments and education – to musicians and their communities. Completed in January 2009 is the Foundation’s first project, the Ntonga Music School in South Africa. Its second, the Mehlo Arts Center in Johannesburg, will open later in 2009.

Playing for Change is headquartered in Los Angeles. For more information, please visit the website: www.PlayingForChange.com

CHAIRLIFT TO RELEASE COLUMBIA RECORDS DEBUT DOES YOU INSPIRE YOU ON APRIL 21st

CHAIRLIFT TO RELEASE COLUMBIA RECORDS DEBUT DOES YOU INSPIRE YOU ON APRIL 21st

2008 proved to be a whirlwind of a year for Brooklyn’s dream-pop trio Chairlift, culminating with the band’s recent signing to Columbia Records. Chairlift plans to release their Columbia Records debut, Does You Inspire You, through their new label home on April 21st. The album has been remastered and features two new tracks. The first, “Dixie Gypsy” was produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, and is more psychedelic than the band’s previous ventures. The second, “Le Flying Saucer Hat”, is both French and English, lounge and disco, dance and pop, and serves as a great example of the group’s versatility.

After a move from Boulder to Brooklyn in 2007, Caroline Polacheck, Aaron Pfenning and Patrick Wimberly started developing their hypnotic, synth-pop sound. Their first release was an acclaimed 7-inch and digital DL single for “Evident Utensil.” The NME called it “a charming pop oddity,” Exclaim! gave it “immediate cult status,” and RCRDLBL.com deemed it “the best single from a Brooklyn band since like TV on the Radio or something.” Comparisons were also made to The Knife, Of Montreal, and Yaz(!). The B-side of this limited 7″ was a psyched-out remix by MGMT.

The band spent the summer of ’08 touring the US with Ariel Pink, and In the early fall, Chairlift’s popularity exploded when the band’s catchy pop single “Bruises” got chosen for the colorful new iPod Nano-Chromatic commercial. In October, Chairlift played a well-received series of CMJ shows before heading to Canada to join Yeasayer on a brief US tour. By November, they were in Europe for their first overseas tour. They rounded out the year on the west coast playing a few dates with Vampire Weekend. Chairlift ended the year as strongly as they started, with Does You Inspire You being named one of SPIN Magazine’s Top 40 Albums of 2008.

Does You Inspire You track listing:

1. Garbage
2. Planet Health
3. Earwig Town
4. Bruises

“Besotted with reverb drenched synthetic lushness, they flit from uncanny new-wave caricatures to beguiling heroin country ballads, nodding deeply to David Lynch’s Angelo Badalamenti-scored oeuvre” – SPIN – Top 40 Albums of 2008

“Aesthetics, ecology and intergalactic millinery: welcome to the dawning of the age of Chairlift.” – NME Radar

“…molasses-covered, electro-funk fantasy of innocence, and it throbs like Prince on sizzurp.” – Blender

“Chairlift possess that rare charm that transcends any self-aware genre or calculated scene…the album’s cool temperature is balanced by the uplift of its exalted riffs and melodies – overall, an inspirational debut.” – Bust

“Brooklyn’s Chairlift sounds like Siouxsie Sioux fronting an ’80s synth band (which is to say, awesome), and their debut provides an incomparably swoon-worthy listen.”- VMAN

“…like a sunnier version of The Cure fronted by Kate Bush…” – Vice

“‘Does You Inspire You,’ is a loopy confection of synth-pop goodness that evokes Yaz and the Knife, with Polachek crooning away like a more chipper Cat Power. – OUT Magazine

“…this trio anchors their roots in the same soil that Cocteau Twins, Kate Bush and the Cure cultivated and called home.” – Venus Zine

“Chairlift’s spooky approach to pop sets them apart from some of their contemporaries.” – Under The Radar “Pleased To Meet You” Artist

British Music at SXSW March 18 – March 22 2009

British Music at SXSW March 18 – March 22 2009

The British Music Embassy @ Latitude 30
512 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin TX 78701 Tel: 512 472 3332

The British Music at SXSW team, a partnership consisting of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the major trade organisations AIM (Association of Independent Music) and rights collecting societies PRS for Music, used their combined funds to create the largest and most successful national presence at SXSW this year. Over 190 British acts have been invited to perform, along with 350 British companies plus 500 delegates will be in attendance at the festival – all with good intentions. Whether they’re seeking overseas partnerships, striking license deals, or shaking hands on new publishing agreements one thing is for certain – there will be a stronger presence this year than any other featuring an all-inclusive plethora of great British Music.

The Best of British, from all corners of the UK – Belfast, Northern Ireland, Liverpool, the North West, Yorkshire, and Scotland, will be presented to you by some of today’s most influential music enthusiasts and tastemakers including NME, Kerrang, and Nic Harcourt. While many flock to the UK to discover the latest exports in the sonic melting pot that is the British music scene, British Music takes over Latitude 30 from March 18th through March 22nd, presenting four days and nights of non-stop, fresh-faced British Bands who aim to contribute to the ever changing international music scene. Gallows, Laura Marling, The Whip, We Have Band, The Hot Melts, Skibunny, Friends Electric, DANANANANAYKROYD, Wild Beasts and Temper Trap are just some of this years’ highlights.

While the music is what drives their dedication, the ideas that spout from the British Music Partnership are inventive and refreshing with artists such as Jamie Hewlett, renowned for his work with the Gorillaz, supplied art for the SXSW delegate bag. And in curating various panels which aim to observe the most heavily discussed issues within the music industry today, British Music is constantly thinking forward, with exciting topics such as Green Track #3: British Innovations where moderators Karen Emanuel MD, Key Production Alison Tickell Dir, Julie’s Bicycle will discuss how the UK is at the forefront of thinking and acition on environmental matters. Another compelling panel that PRS for Music has curated is Licensing Music In A Converging World, moderated by Executive Editor of Music Confidential, Susan Butler, which also includes BBC’s Peter Bradbury and Kenny McPherson from Chrysalis Music North America. These panels, along with the celebration of a few VIP anniversaries coming up this year – 50 Years of Island, 40 Years of Chrysalis and 10 Years of AIM, The History of British Indies Panel should surely not be missed. Last but not least, their ideas are productive — Building on the success of the “AIM & A2IM Business Speed Dating” events held at SXSW since 2007, AIM and A2iM have organized a repeat performance at SXSW 2009.

“Whenever I’m approached by an organization about how to best exploit the opportunities that SXSW affords business and creative talent, I always point to the British Music effort. Their ability to to work towards a common end and forge alliances across the public and private sectors, between big and small business, well- known and unknown artists – the whole messy array of competing, often conflicting interests – is unmatched. They are often mimicked. But British Music is always stays a step ahead. Each year they adapt to changing business conditions, each year they employ a new creative strategy, every year they become more effective. When SXSW first launched, the very broad goal was to create an environment where people could further their dreams and ambitions. British Music, as much as any entity, has shown me what the concrete reality of such a vision looks like.” Brent Grulke – SXSW Creative Director

The success and profile of British Music has continued to amplify with the likes of many groundbreaking artists and successful start-up indie companies who are grateful for the ongoing support they have been given over the years. This year, the British Music Partnership are proud to present some of the brightest, most eclectic up-and-coming new talent and perhaps some of the greatest ambassadors from the UK.

The schedule is below for British Music at SXSW 2009.
