WOODHANDS TOUR THE US, COVER KATY PERRY’S “I KISSED A GIRL”

Toronto electro-duo Woodhands will be embarking on a US tour in the wake of their recent Paper Bag Records Dancer EP. After the success of their cover for Eddy Grant’s one-hit wonder “Electric Avenue” (blessed by Eddy himself), the keytar-n-drums unit of Daniel Werb and Paul Banwatt have decided to tackle Katy Perry’s hit single “I Kissed a Girl.” According to Werb, “we did it because the spirit of the song spoke to us: It’s that feeling of being overwhelmed by the moment, of indulgence, of unfettered hedonism. Also, Katy Perry is hella hot. And the song is dope.”

“Woodhands added a special twist to “I Kissed a Girl” that makes the song just that much cooler than the original. Perhaps it’s the growling chorus that gives it a one up to Perry’s nasal whimpers, or maybe it is just that the Woodhands’ version makes you want to break it down instead of having an experimental game of girl-on-girl cherry chapstick action…don’t worry. Your indie credibility won’t be tainted by adding this track to your music library, or at least you can pretend it won’t for the time being.” – The Tripwire

Since dropping their debut LP Heart Attack in April 2008, Woodhands has been touring pretty much constantly, with stops across North America, Japan, China, and upcoming dates in Europe. Recently, Dan and Paul have also been cranking out remixes and cover tracks and have been attracting high-level praise from the likes of Rolling Stone and NME. While Heart Attack appeared on a slew of “Best of 2008” year-end lists including “Best Electro Album” from iTunes Canada, their live show has to be seen to be believed: no pre-programmed samples, no laptops, no safety net: just two hyperkinetic, high-energy performers bringing the party as hard as possible, a little different each time.

The Warlocks Leak New Song off Upcoming Album, The Mirror Explodes, out May 19th on Tee Pee Records

Earlier this week The Warlocks leaked the track Red Camera on RCRD LBL from their forthcoming album The Mirror Explodes out May 19th on Tee Pee Records.

They came out of the late 90s neo-psychedelic scene, along with awesome bands Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and the Dandy Warhols. Each of their albums are different in sound and approach (due to their lineup, which fluctuates from as few as four to as many as ten), while at the same time maintaining a singular sound that is uniquely their own. – Brooklyn Vegan

…hypnotic, fuzzed-up drone-rock… sweet-sounding, rotten-hearted ‘60s pop… over the top and steadfastly retro, but in a good way. – Blender Magazine

Time is neither constant nor concrete. It’s made of color and shade. Time flows, blurs and fades into the dim morning light. Time melts. And THE WARLOCKS are the ecstatic, hazy, foreboding, holy tick-tock of time that isn’t anything at all.

For five albums, The Warlocks have lived between and beyond the minutes and hours of time. Sway to The Warlocks live and loud and songs will drift and envelop each other like the fog. Listen to the records and you’ll hear soundtracks to fuzz-freaked, bacchanalian stomps, pre-dawn city prowls, sleeping late with new crushes, and the elation and exhaustion that washes in and recede deep into the wee hours.

The Warlocks new LP, The Mirror Explodes, speaks and whispers from all of these places. But where the band’s last long player, Heavy Deavy Skull Lover, tweaked time in an icy-cool, white-noise swirl that evoked a decadent lysergic night, The Mirror Explodes is disorientation through a longer lens —pictures of luck, longing, losing, moods and fever dreams scrambled in the haze of near and distant memory.

On the 8 songs of The Mirror Explodes, the band’s signature amalgam of White Light/White Heat attack; space panoramas, fuzz, melancholy, and melody is present and potent. But there is a vivid focus too. Throbbing bass lines, distant rolling thunder drums, and zombie rattlesnake shake are a heartbeat of strange, ominous vitality. Guitars howl, slash and bounce like light. Bobby Hecksher’s vocals sound oddly alone and unsettlingly intimate all at once. And just when you think you understand the sum of these sonic elements, they become something else entirely.

* The Mirror Explodes was produced and recorded by Rod Cervera (Weezer, The Rentals) at Clear Lake Studios, Mastered by JJ Golden at Golden Mastering. Listen to track 1, “Red Camera” off the band’s new album below.

HOWLING BELLS SIGN TO NETTWERK MUSIC GROUP BAND CONFIRMED TO OPEN FOR COLDPLAY ON MAY/JUNE SPRING TOUR LEAD SINGLE ‘CITIES BURNING DOWN’ OUT JUNE 2 ON ITUNES SOPHOMORE ALBUM RADIO WARS SET FOR JULY 28 RELEASE

Nettwerk Music Group is proud to announce the signing of Australian rock n rollers HOWLING BELLS. The breakout group is set to release their sophomore album and N. American debut RADIO WARS on July 28th in the US and Canada, with their smoldering first single “Cities Burning Down” out June 2nd on iTunes. They’ll celebrate early by joining COLDPLAY on their North American tour this May and June.

The UK-based band–lead vocalist Juanita Stein, guitarist brother Joel Stein, bassist Brendan Picchio and drummer Glenn Moule–formed in Australia in 2004 and shortly after moved to London, where they recorded their 2006 self-titled debut album with producer Ken Nelson (Coldplay). Since the first guitar strums of their stellar eponymous debut, the group has delivered a dark and razor sharp rock n roll sound that has left fans and media swooning in their wake. Driven by singles “Setting Sun” and “Low Happening,” the success of Howling Bells saw the foursome tour with the likes of The Killers and Placebo in Europe and Snow Patrol in Australia.

Already a top 30 album in the UK, their sophomore release Radio Wars sees the band expanding their darkly majestic sound and seems certain to elevate the group to a wider consciousness. The dark subject matter that marked the first remains, but it’s a set of songs that are far more adventurous and diverse sounding, yet equally as melodic. For Radio Wars, the band partnered with Dan Grech-Marguerat, who has engineered records alongside producer Nigel Godrich, including Radiohead, Air and Paul McCartney.

The UK press have continued to pour on critical praise, declaring Radio Wars “unashamedly epic in it’s scope, awash with windswept beauty and darkly romantic lyrics…” (UNCUT). The DAILY MAIL observes: “Singer Jaunita Stein’s breathless vocals evoke vintage Debbie Harry while nodding towards the swagger of Garbage’s Shirley Manson.”

Now fresh off a triumphant homecoming show at V Festival in Melbourne, the group has the distinct pleasure of joining Coldplay this May and June as they tour across the US and Canada. Concertgoers will do best to be punctual as the Bells have been known to put on an intoxicating live performance. Says NME,”Take one magnificent frontwoman, one guitar genius, and a set of incredible songs, and what do you get? Total brilliance, obviously.”
