My Morning Jacket Hit the Road With The Preservation Hall Jazz Band For Jazzfest, Southeastern US Dates

My Morning Jacket Hit the Road With The Preservation Hall Jazz Band For Jazzfest, Southeastern US Dates

It’s been almost a full year, but the wait is finally over. My Morning Jacket are ready to bring their electrifying live show back on the road. The guys will make their way around the Southeastern United States this Spring, including a performance at this year’s Jazzfest in New Orleans. MMJ are also excited to both try something new with their choice for an opening act, and bring some of the spirit of NOLA along with them. The band is honored that the historic Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be supporting them on the run.

The connection with the PHJB originated in the Spring of 2009 when MMJ frontman Jim James was invited to sing with them at their home turf, New Orleans’ legendary Preservation Hall. James recorded two songs with the band: “St. James Infirmary” and “Louisiana Fairytale.” The tracks will appear on the bands forthcoming album, PRESERVATION: An Album To Benefit Preservation Hall & The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program, out February 16th.

“When I got the invitation to go to the legendary Preservation Hall – where SO much of the music we now know and love on this earth found its early roots – I did not waste a minute,” James reminisces. “Getting to sing while the guys played with such glorious bursts of sound – all live in that holy room with the ghosts and garbage trucks crankin’ along – was an experience I’ll never forget.”

The PHJB’s leader Ben Jaffe shares his memory of playing with James: “I couldn’t have imagined Jim fitting in any better with the guys at Preservation Hall. Creating music is not a science. There is no tried and true formula. There is an unspoken bond amongst musicians. One that exists in the notes we choose. Jim’s like our long lost cousin coming home for the first time.”

MMJ Tour Dates With The Preservation Hall Jazz Band:

04/20: Birmingham, AL @ Alabama Theater

04/21: Nashville, TN @ Municipal Auditorium

04/23: Atlanta, GA @ Chastain Park

Bigbang’s Greni Nominated for Norwegian Grammy

Bigbang’s Greni Nominated for Norwegian Grammy

Øystein Greni of Bigbang was nominated this week for the 2009 Norwegian Grammy’s Spellemannsprisen, in the category of Popular Music Composer for the album Edendale.

Edendale, which went platinum in Norway and was just released in North America this month, is notable in that while this is the sixth nomination for the band (prior nominations include three for best album, one for best newcomers and one for best song), it is the first for Greni as a composer.

“I am honored and thrilled to be nominated as a songwriter,” says Greni.”When you are in a band, you sometimes feel people don’t pay attention to the songwriting. It’s all about the guitar tones or the musicianship. In our case it’s all about the live show we put on. To be acknowledged on the strength of our songs, which may be part of the secret to our live success, is a big compliment. It touches the hardworking loner artist in me, as opposed to the less vulnerable stagediving frontman.”

The televised awards show will be held on 6th of March at the Oslo Spektrum.

Bigbang will be performing at NX35 festival in Denton TX, March 11-16 and at the SXSW Music Conference in Austin March 17-21.

DENMARK’S UNDER BYEN ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF FOURTH ALBUM, ALT ER TABT

DENMARK’S UNDER BYEN ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF FOURTH ALBUM, ALT ER TABT

“A heavy-riff boom that sounds like Sigur Ros’ idea of Black Sabbath…the lyrics are in Danish, but this full-moon magic needs no translation.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone

“Gorgeous and sweeping…well crafted, well balanced, and well worth zoning out to.” – SPIN

“Under Byen’s great with eerie beauty…chilling and catchy at once. 7.7/10” – Pitchfork

“The interplay, the spaces left out by one instrument, into which another player would insert a sound, seemed carefully arranged, and this sort of socket approach grabbed me instantly. The mood is one of beautiful desolation and melancholy.” – David Byrne

Denmark’s Under Byen (Danish for ‘under the city’) is set to release their fourth album Alt Er Tabt (All Is Lost) on April 6th 2010. The new album is the band’s first studio album since 2006’s Internationally-acclaimed Samme Stof Som Stof. Alt Er Tabt will be the band’s third release on Paper Bag Records.

Alt Er Tabt is Under Byen’s most direct album to date. It is structured around subtle, minimal and abstract sounds. The music and lyrics are always on the edge of exploding into a new meaning, new complexity and new shades of wealth. The instruments were recorded to preserve their pure unmediated materiality, where music is confused with sounds. A cello sounds like wood. A guitar sounds like steel. Alt Er Tabt is the group’s most lively and playful album to date – no matter how alarming the tone might sound.

“A lot has happened in the band since we released Samme Stof Som Stof four years ago,” says Nils Gröndahl. “Thorbjørn, who played the piano, has left the band, and being without him has in some way turned us into a new band. He wrote most of the music, but on Alt Er Tabt everyone in the band has contributed to the songwriting.”

Under Byen broke the music world open with 2006’s North American release of its album Samme Stof Som Stof. The album was performed in such unconventional locations as an 18th-century Belgian house, and a Swedish forest.

THE BURNED GETS STOKED BY SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM RELEASE

THE BURNED GETS STOKED BY SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM RELEASE

It would be easy to say the debut album by The Burned is hot and why not? It’s an incendiary self-titled first effort by singer/songwriter Kurt Baumann featuring12 tracks of mesmerizing lyricism and melodies that assert that someone with enough talent and a burning vision can still tell a good story with a good song. There’s depth to Baumann’s songwriting as The Burned, carving out a place on music’s mantle where awards and accolades are sure to eventually settle.

But enough of the obvious adjectives that will no doubt follow The Burned throughout its career. Although the vision is Baumann’s alone, he plans on bringing a payload of top notch Austin and California area musicians with him for the ride. Just where that ride goes remains to be seen, but this much is known: there are 3 digital tracks burning brightly at the moment in advance of the full album release on January 26, 2010.

The album is the product of Baumann’s years in the business: first as a member of the popular rock band Kan’Nal; and more-recently as the frontman of Grammy-winning DJ Adam Freeland’s electro-rock trio, Freeland (which he spent considerable time on the road with this past summer). With all this seasoning, it’s no wonder the album delivers on many musical fronts and is flavored with ominous, masterful storytelling with tracks like “Where Are We Now,” “Monster” and “Make Believe.

“It’s the storytelling and commitment to crafting my own sound,” says Baumann with the authority and experience of a well-seasoned veteran and the desire to make it on his own, “I’ve tested myself on different levels over the years, and the answers are contained on this album,” he adds.

Teaming up with veteran Producer and friend Dik Darnell [Baby Huey (Curtis Mayfield); Stallion (Casablanca); Jimmy Ibbotson of the Dirt Band; co-writer and producer with John Denver; and artist/producer/engineer at Caribou Ranch where Elton John, Chicago, The Beach Boys, Michael Murphy, Joe Walsch and many more recorded in the 70’s], Baumann has really dug deep within himself for this first solo album creating memorable grooves, lyrics, melodies and a sound that carries people to discover deeper places within themselves.

“Where Are We Now” has already appeared on the TV landscape, being featured in the second season’s premier episode of CRASH on the Starz network.

Now, with the combination of raw talent and industry wisdom, The Burned is in position to cut a broad swath in the music industry because this is a wildfire coming that won’t be easily contained.

FM BELFAST ANNOUNCES US DEBUT, PREPARES TO MAKE MORE FRIENDS THAN EVER

FM BELFAST ANNOUNCES US DEBUT, PREPARES TO MAKE MORE FRIENDS THAN EVER DOWNLOAD FIRST SINGLE “PAR AVION” FROM HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS

After being one of the most talked-about bands all over Europe, due in no small part to their energetic and engaging live show, Reykjavik’s FM Belfast are set to release their debut album in the US, how to make friends. Due out in Spring 2010 on Kimi Records (Benni Hemm Hemm, Retro Stefson, Reykjavik!), how to make friends is a careening electro-pop album full of unexpected jolts and turns, including trumpets, cowbells, and plenty of seething synths. After a local release, how to make friends sold over 5,000 copies in Iceland, and with it the band is poised to bring the party to the states.

What started as an informal duo in 2005 has developed into a sizable army of anywhere from 3 to 45 performers (including members of múm and Benni Hemm Hemm). Despite not having an album out in the US last year, FM Belfast became a must-see band at SXSW ’09, giving out sticks of gum and drawings with their CDs and playing to packed venues. The Austin Chronicle listed them as one of their “Bands to Watch,” while the Denver Post named them one of the “Top 10 New Finds”, calling them “one of the most refreshing” bands at SXSW. SPIN soon joined the bandwagon, making them “Artist of the Day” and proclaiming, “It’s gloriously kitschy, Commodore-64-style digipop… kind of like a low-fi version of Royksopp.” The BBC enthused, “Last night I got as excited by a new band as I’ve ever been in my life… FM Belfast are utterly fantastic.”

In the meantime, FM Belfast kept busy remixing tracks for other artists including múm, Retro Stefson, Skatar, Nix Noltes, Gus Gus, and Kasper Bjorke. After years of playing their songs to live audiences, FM Belfast is set to expand their reach with how to make friends.

For a taste of their blistering energy and sometimes-sweet, sometimes-dark, always-catchy songs, download their first single, “Par Avion.” Also, check out the video for “Par Avion” on Youtube.
