Last December, Øya was named Oslo’s greenest business in 2009 by Grønn Hverdag (Green Living), a network of people, groups and organizations working together to raise consciousness about environmental choices in everyday life. Øya is held in a medieval park, a picturesque spot surrounded by sandy beaches, the

Oslo Fjords, the green Ekeberg Hill and the Oslo skyline. Rooted deep in history, the medieval park is also the place where the capital of Norway was founded a thousand years ago. For 4 days in the middle of August, the Medieval Park in Oslo is transformed into an arena for musical, visual and cross-cultural performances. The Øya Festival is an energetic and symbiotic experience with a unique atmosphere and audience that bares resemblance to none other.

Amidst the festival area of trees, green grass and water, the festival is well equipped with stages, shopping streets and small shops serving food and drink. The site creates an exciting rendezvous between nature and culture, being just a short walk from the city centre of Oslo.

It’s easy to see that AMERICAN IDOL top finalist and Chicago native LEE DeWYZE is not only being hailed as the next Daughtry, but is garnering amazing praise from the AMERICAN IDOL judges. But, before DeWYZE came to the attention of the hit-making franchise, he was a struggling musician, working with a small Chicago label called Wuli Records. LEE DeWYZE has two previously released records available for purchase now! The notable records, Slumberland and So I’m Told, feature producers Ryan McGuire and guitarist extraordinaire, Louis Svitek, well known for his work with Ministry, M.O.D. and Mind Funk. The collaboration is an evocative, haunting mix of multi-instrumental, multi-faceted songs whose artistry draws comparison to Jack Johnson and Chris Martin.

AMERICAN IDOL judge Kara DioGuardi declared Lee’s voice “a good fit for radio right now.” Ellen DeGeneres has called his performances “great,” and the hard to please Simon Cowell has declared that Lee is “head and shoulders above everyone else,” “the best singer [among the group of men],” and “may be the one to beat.”

See below for the tracklisting on LEE DeWYZE’s two remarkable releases:

1. So What Now
2. All Fall Down
3. Annabelle
4. Princes
5. Flower Child
6. Where You Lie
7. Stay
8. Another Sleep Song
9. Sweet Sweet
10. Goodnight

2. Imagination
3. A Song I Wrote For You
4. Love And Misery
5. Dreaming Alone

Witness publications praising the efforts of LEE DeWYZE:

“You walk away feeling that DeWYZE got it right with the chilling melodic vocal lines, the brilliant guitar work coupled with everything else.” – Julia Antia, Chicago Splash Magazine 2007

“LEE’s Album has a good message delivered with warmth and compassion by the clear and consistent vocals.” – Taxi Magazine 2007, 7/10 Rating

“an amazing debut album”
Associated Press
“You’re going to love each song on this album”
USA Today’s Pop Candy
“a set of bold, assured songs so elegantly composed that many could pass for old standards. 8.0”

With this week’s release of her debut album as The Mynabirds, Laura Burhenn has officially turned the page from her role as one half of Georgie James. Following The Mynabirds’ acclaimed first single “Numbers Don’t Lie,” Laura is giving another taste of What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood (Saddle Creek) with the bouncy, kiss-off anthem “Let The Record Go.” Download the track HERE and if you haven’t heard “Numbers” yet you can check it out HERE. For the next week you can also stream the full album HERE on Saddle Creek’s website. Catch Laura and her band live when they kick off their spring tour on April 30th, which includes dates opening for Josh Ritter.
What We Lose draws from the gospel, old soul, and rock n roll that Burhenn was raised on, and many of the lyrics are inspired by a Zen-like view of the themes of loss and recovery. With a surprisingly husky voice, considering her small stature, Burhenn adorns her words with a rich and emotive tone. In the studio, singer-songwriter/producer Richard Swift helped carry out Burhenn’s vision, resulting in an album packed with both subtle detail and immediate charm
The album also includes some notable guest artists. Tom Hnatow (These United States) played pedal steel, Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) arranged the horns on the album and backing vocals were provided by Orenda Fink (Azure Ray) and engineer/producer AJ Mogis (Monsters of Folk, Cursive, Tilly and The Wall).

The Wailin’ Jennys tour Canada for the first time in two years.

The Wailin’ Jennys tour Canada for the first time in two years.

Toronto – Winnipeg, Manitoba-based, The Wailin’ Jennys are set to tour Canada for the first time in two years in support of their album, Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House (Outside Music). The band will release their highly-anticipated third studio album this fall. The as-yet-untitled album was produced by Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, The Tragically Hip). The Wailin’ Jennys just returned from a sold out US tour.

In the meantime, Heather Masse released her solo album Bird Song (Red House Records) in November of 2009. Ruth MoodyDavid Travers-Smith produced solo album The Garden (Red House Records) in the US last week. A release date for Canada will be announced soon. Nicky Mehta and her partner Grant have been kept busy with the arrival of twin boys Beck and Finn released her in July of 2009.

The Wailin’ Jennys released their first live album, Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House in July of 2009. The album was recorded in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania in August of 2008. The eighteen-track album features eight previously unrecorded songs and some new versions of old favourites. Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House has been in the top 20 on Billboard’s Bluegrass charts since its release.

“It’s great to be back out on the road and we’re especially thrilled to finally be playing in Canada again,” says Ruth Moody. “We’ll be playing songs from the live album as well as some brand new songs from the upcoming studio album.”

What folks are saying about Live At The Mauch Chunk Opera House:

“…in a live setting, free of overdubs, multiple takes and pitch-correction technology, the subtle shades and delicate nuances of the human voice are on display for all to hear, mistakes and all – but there are no vocal flaws here. Equally perfect for sunny day, open highway cruises and reflective, late-night drives, Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House proves that The Wailin’ Jennys are on top of their game and at the top of their field.” – Pop Matters.

“The three-part harmonies of Winnipeg’s Wailin’ Jennys should be considered some kind of national treasure. They’re captured magnificently here in a live setting.” – Hamilton Spectator

“The Jennys give their angelic harmonies full flight on covers of Emmylou Harris’s Deeper Well, Gillian Welch’s One More Dollar, even Gershwin’s Summertime and the old spiritual Motherless Child. Former Winnipegger Jeremy Penner’s fiddle and mandolin accompaniment adds depth and richness throughout.”
– Winnipeg Free Press

“The Jennys display their flair for popularizing traditional folk songs. Songs such as “Motherless Child” and “Bring Me L’il Water Silvy” sound fresh and exciting in their hands. Joined by new member Heather Masse and sideman Jeremy Penner on violin and fiddle, The Wailin’ Jennys deliver more than an hour of first class music.” – Vintage Guitar Magazine

Despite a year long departure from the road, the Wailin’ Jennys have not left the hearts and minds of their fans. The Jennys continue to be one of the most sought-after acts on the international roots scene and 2010 promises to deliver one of the most exciting chapters yet in the band’s history.

The Outside Music label formed in 2002 in order to release albums by some of the finest Canadian and international artists. Located in Toronto, Ontario, the label continues to flourish with a roster that currently includes The Sadies, Jill Barber, Matthew Barber, The Besnard Lakes, Sunparlour Players, Rebekah Higgs, The Diableros, The Hylozoists, Dog Day and Oh Susanna.

It was designed by two-time Grammy™ nominated musician/producer Christopher Thorn, member of the band Blind Melon. The studio is outfitted with guitars, keyboard, drum kit and a Mac computer equipped with a Pro Tools, GarageBand and Reason software. Clients are invited to ship their personal musical equipment to the facility for use during their stay if desired. The studio was designed for clients to continue to express their creativity as they recover. Thorn notes, “Music is an art form that can affect us in profound ways and it’s basically a universal medium. It can provide comfort, joy and laughter, and can help us through our most trying times. With the creation of the studio at Clarity Way, my hope is that those in recovery can use music as an outlet to find peace, and as a tool for self-discovery, in order to gain insight into who they strive to be in this life.” Clients may choose to work with the on-site music therapist or use free time during the day to work in the studio.

The facility is a place where individuals who are serious about recovery can experience top notch care for mind, body and spirit. Upon arrival, clients receive a full medical and psychological evaluation, to determine an individually tailored treatment plan. By making use of all three learning styles clients achieve success by learning to truly understand the process of addiction and the benefits of clean and sober living. The multi-disciplinary approach enables clients to draw from a variety of avenues to define and apply new ways of understanding the mind, body and spirit. The team of therapists specializes in different modalities providing clear insight and perspective for each client in dealing with their individual issues. The therapists work in the disciplines of Drug and Alcohol, Cognitive Behavioral, Educational, Holistic, Family, Spiritual, Music, Art, Massage Therapy, Fitness Training and Life Skills. Through their own specific avenues, each discipline presents the same message of sobriety and clean living.

Clarity Way is aware of the need to have the most supportive and comfortable environment possible for those choosing recovery. Clients’ goals are achieved by participating in weekly private and group therapy sessions and a variety of recreational activities. a-ha Tour the U.S. for First Time in Over Twenty Years, Just in Time to Say Goodbye with FAREWELL TOUR 2010

Multi-million selling Norwegian trio a-ha will return to North America next week for 7 shows, before heading back to Europe for the final leg of their year-long world-wide Farewell Tour. The band will perform together for the very last time in Oslo on 4 December 2010.

Following a fantastic international career spanning 25 years and over 35 million albums sold, a-ha’s Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy will perform their final shows together exactly 25 years after the release of the band’s multi-platinum debut album Hunting High & Low and debut single “Take On Me”, which reached number 1 in 27 countries including the USA. Since that time, “Take On Me” has been played 3 million times on American radio… the equivalent of 375 times a day for 22 years! For a blast from the past, check out the video for “Take On Me” here.

In the mid 80’s the Norwegian trio created teenage hysteria and general pandemonium wherever they went. All told, the band has released 9 studio albums in 25 years, and toured the world many times (more than 500 concerts in 33 countries to be exact), including the legendary show at Maracana Stadium, Rio De Janeiro in 1991 which earned a Guinness World Record for the largest-ever audience attendance at a paid concert – 196,000 people (George Michael, Prince and Guns N’ Roses managed to gather only sixty thousand each).
In 2006 the band received the ‘Q Inspiration Award’ in honor of their lasting musical influence. The band returned to the UK Top 5 in 2009 with the album Foot Of The Mountain. The video for the title track can be seen here. In recent years the focus has shifted to the musical legacy they will leave behind, inspiring a whole generation of artists such as Coldplay and Keane to Kanye West, Oasis, The Strokes, Robbie Williams and U2.
The band would like to thank their fans and everyone who has contributed to their amazing journey and say, “We’ve literally lived the ultimate boy’s adventure tale, through a longer, more rewarding career than anyone could hope for. Doing this now will give us a chance to get more involved in other meaningful aspects of life, be it humanitarian work, politics, or whatever else – and of course through new constellations in the field of art and music. We are retiring as a band, not as individuals. Change is always difficult and it is easy to get set in one’s ways. Now it is time to move on.” In keeping with their interest in humanitarian and global causes, a-ha still own a sizeable part of the Amazon rainforest as part of a 1980’s reforestation/preservation scheme.

Sevendust Deliver Career Album & Highest Chart Debut Ever

April 28th, 2010. Atlanta, GA: The fans have spoken. Cold Day Memory is Sevendust’s “best album to date” (Brett Ellis on Facebook). “I find it hard for words to describe how unbelievably amazing this album is. Such intense passion and depth.” (SupermanNYC on iTunes). “Best 7Dust CD ever” (Trey Lee Cowart on Facebook). “Unf*ckingbelievable” (@Szajdi on Twitter). “Album of the year. I know there are 8 months left in the year, but I don’t honestly see anything topping this. Anything.” (Cfw828 on “Sevendust are back harder than ever!” (jamroc2223 on iTunes).

Not only have the fans raved about it, they actually bought it too and at a higher clip than ever before. Cold Day Memory debuted at #12 on today’s Billboard Top 200, the highest debut of the bands’ storied 8 studio album, 15 year career. A trimphant return for Sevendust’s original lineup – Lajon Witherspoon (vocals), Morgan Rose (drums/vocals), Clint Lowery (guitar/vocals), Vince Hornsby (bass/vocals) and John Connolly (guitar/vocals). The limited edition CD/DVD includes 12 tracks along with an hour long behind the scenes DVD highlighting various aspects of the recording process.

With Lowery as a major contributor, Sevendust released four albums that stretched the limits of hard rock and metal, combining elements of thrash, classic metal, southern rock and soul into songs that were both sinfully tuneful and ruthlessly aggressive. Then in 2003, after the release of Seasons, the guitarist quit to focus on his other band. Sevendust continued for three more albums, and enjoyed considerable success, but something was clearly missing. So, when the band reunited with Lowery in early 2008, it was like the missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle was finally reinserted and the picture was again complete.

The results are telling. Along with Cold Day Memory being Sevendust’s highest charting debut ever, the album’s first single, “Unraveling”, set a debut milestone as well. It entered the BDS Active Rock radio chart higher than any other Sevendust track. It surpassed 2003’s “Enemy,” which wound up peaking at #6 and is currently their highest charting song to date. At radio, “Unraveling” is the most well received Sevendust song ever and has the chance to be an absolute crossover monster.

Sevendust will be on the road with Nonpoint, Saving Abel and Day of Fire in April and May and are confirmed for the entire Carnival Of Madness Tour with Shinedown, Chevelle, Puddle Of Mudd and 10 Years this summer. A full list of dates is below.

The video for “Unraveling”. Sevendust is offering fans the chance to order a limited edition signed copy of Cold Day Memory from their own webstore.

Minneapolis-based artist Jeremy Messersmith is preparing for a two-month long summer tour in support of his forthcoming full-length, The Reluctant Graveyard, the final installment of his album trilogy (out May 4). The tour will kick off in Omaha and Jeremy will make his way to both coasts. Comic book artist Ming Doyle illustrated a lovely poster to accompany (below). Check out Jeremy’s first single, “Violet!,” now available for mp3 download!

Jeremy’s music takes cues from ’60s Beach Boys, Beatles and Zombies-influenced chamber pop and classic pop. He puts his own energy and spin on the pop formula, and has a genuine talent for writing updated, instantly-memorable songs. His music has been featured on NPR, MTV and “Ugly Betty” among others.

A highly active member of the social media world and music community, Jeremy updates his website every Wednesday with new content, from a b-side track, show announcement, lunchtime video concert, to streaming video from the recording studio allowing for live fan feedback. This week, Jeremy is offering a pre-order of his album, and has organized a week-long Twitter-based “scavenger hunt” in the Twin Cities, planting download cards and vinyl in select places around the city. One new clue/location will be revealed every day leading up to his album release.

Check out a live performance from Jeremy on 89.3 The Current for his song “A Girl, A Boy and a Graveyard,” featured on The Reluctant Graveyard, and be sure to catch him when he comes to your town!

“With simple chord progressions and beautifully crafted melodies, his music feels reminiscent of ’60s-style, Beach Boys-influenced pop.” -NPR World Cafe

“The lyrics of his songs also suggest that he’s a little on the glum side of things, although those dark lyrics all come supported by a musical spoonful of sugar: beautiful, catchy melodies.” -KCMP 89.3 The Current

“Imagine Elliott Smith driving in a convertible, the wind flying through his hair, singing about sadness and somehow creating joy enough to forget his troubles for a while.” -The Onion

“Jeremy Messersmith has that certain je ne sais quoi. His sad lyrics/happy melody coupling isn’t brand-new, but it’s done in a way that conjures images of a still-upright Elliott Smith performing songs intended for Brian Wilson or A.C. Newman, not a bad spot to be in, all told.” -City Pages (Village Voice)

Picking up where the last full-length, Storyteller And The Gossip Columnist left off, listeners can hear the natural progression toward what ultimately became Champion: a swooning, eerie, beautiful, morose and uplifting soundscape that serves as an undeniable reminder of the tension, release, intensity and intrinsic harmony that all of us experience and celebrate in life. Unlike the previous disc, Champion is a largely instrumental affair, using vocals as additional layers, rather than the music’s guide.

Champion Of The Noisy Negativists is a continuation in the evolution of songwriter/producer Krist Krueger, whose work has often been compared to fellow moody pop artists The National, Brendan Benson, Richard Ashcroft and Tindersticks. Predominantly recorded at Krueger’s own Sonic Sandbox (Portland, OR) and completed at Haywire Studios (Portland, OR), Champion was engineered by both Krueger and Robert Bartleson and produced by Krueger.
