Amanda Palmer Makes $15,000 In First 3 Minutes of Radiohead Covers Project- First Run of Vinyl Sells Out Immediately Second Run of Vinyl and New Bundles Available August 6th

“One of the better DIY success stories”
– Billboard.biz

On July 20th, Amanda Palmer and her business collective – Sean Francis, Beth Hommel, and Hayley Rosenblum (lovingly dubbed “Team Chaos”) – released “Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on her Magical Ukulele” via Bandcamp to remarkable success. This was Palmer’s first experimental digital-and-vinyl only release independent of a record label, and strong proof that Palmer’s vision of “moving towards a patronage society” is indeed a workable – and profitable – solution for unsigned mid-level bands.

Available for a minimum donation of 84 cents (to cover Radiohead’s royalties and PayPal fees), the EP sold more than $15,000 worth in downloads and merchandise in under three minutes, but it didn’t stop there. Several different “bundle options” (including 450+ vinyl/t-shirt/button bundles, 100 packages that included hand-painted ukuleles, a one-on-one call with Amanda and more) and one thousand limited-edition vinyl LPs were sold out in under 24 hours. Less than a week later, all but one of the highest-end packages are gone.

The demand for vinyl is far more than the team expected & Palmer will be pressing another 1,000 copies – this time on transparent orange vinyl (the first edition of 1,000 were red). When those sell out, Palmer will field the fans’ demand and print another thousand on yellow, then green, going through the colors of the rainbow until they retire the project with a standard black release. The team will also, due to demand, unveil a new collection of bundles (including a new t-shirt design created by a fan, as well as digital download of a new music video of “No Surprises”, live performance footage, and more). In true DIY fashion, should a fan wish to add one of these new items to their pre-existing first-run-orders, Palmer’s team will be facilitating this personally via her message board, Twitter, and e-mail.

“Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on her Magical Ukulele” 2.0 is set to go on sale August 6th via Bandcamp, at a time which will be disclosed via Palmer’s news & updates Twitter profile, @AFPwire.

PTTP is one of the nation’s largest free annual music festivals with over 50,000 attendees, featuring a variety of international musicians, visual artists and over 200 exhibitors and green vendors. Launched in 1998, the festival has grown to become one of San Francisco’s cultural traditions, which combines music, the arts, action and yoga in order to educate attendees on issues of social justice, non-violence, cultural co-existence and environmental sustainability.

The three day-long event begins Friday night, September 10th, at The Fillmore with the Power to the Peaceful Pre-Party where Michael Franti will give a special acoustic performance of his new CD, The Sound of Sunshine. The album is set for release September 21st. In addition, the international humanitarian organization, CARE, for which Michael is an ambassador, will present the 2010 Global Action Forum featuring a short film on Michael’s recent journey to East Timor, a film clip of the award winning documentary “A Powerful Noise” and a short Q & A about CARE’s work to empower women around the world to overcome poverty and how people here in the US can get involved.

The day will end with the official PTTP Afterparty at The Fillmore in San Francisco where Michael Franti will present The Rocking Heads – see Michael and special guest musicians rock the stage performing classic Talking Heads songs.

On Sunday, September 12th, The Fillmore will play host to a morning of Yoga & Brazilian Arts Workshops with yoga led by Seane Corn and Michael Franti along with Afro-Brazilian dance with Master Teacher Rosangela Silvestri. Later that afternoon, kids of all ages are welcome to the Power to the Peaceful Family Matinee featuring music, face painting, crafts, eco vendors, and Michael Franti & Friends singing songs to enlighten the hearts and minds of youth and big kids alike.

Since its inception, the Power to the Peaceful foundation has gone on to gain international recognition. PTTP serves to provide funding and awareness to local, national and international charities that focus on health, education, youth and environmental causes. The foundation benefits from several music, art and action events per year, the biggest of which is The Power to the Peaceful Festival. Past artists and speakers at the event include: Ziggy Marley, Alanis Morissette, Indigo Girls, The String Cheese Incident, John Butler Trio, KRS-1, Digital Underground, Woody Harrelson, Angela Davis, Saul Williams, Blackalicious, Alice Walker, Talib Kweli, and many more.

Franti, along with Michael Franti & Spearhead, has organized and contributed to numerous social justice initiatives through the years as well as becoming one of music’s most exciting live concert performers. Michael Franti & Spearhead has shared the stage with a wide range of artists including U2, John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, REM, and Ziggy Marley. BASSIST, VOCALIST AND COMPOSER ESPERANZA SPALDING
ANNOUNCES WORLD TOUR IN SUPPORT OF NEW RELEASE CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

Centuries ago, long before the advent of radio or recording technology, chamber music was the music for the masses – the music in which people from nearly every segment of society could find meaning and relevance. A decade into the 21st century, Esperanza Spalding – the bassist, vocalist and composer who first appeared on the jazz scene in 2008 – takes a contemporary approach to this once universal form of entertainment with a world tour in support of Chamber Music Society, her August 17, 2010, release on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group.

Esperanza creates a modern chamber music group that combines the spontaneity and intrigue of improvisation with sweet and angular string trio arrangements. The result is a sound that weaves the innovative elements of jazz, folk and world music into the enduring foundations of classical music.

“So much of my early musical experience was spent playing chamber music on the violin, and it’s a form of music that I’ve always loved,” says Esperanza. “I was very inspired by a lot of classical music, and chamber music in particular. I’m intrigued by the concept of intimate works that can be played and experienced among friends in an intimate setting. So I decided to create my version of contemporary chamber music, and add one more voice to that rich history.”

Chamber Music Society is a place where connoisseurs of classical music and jazz devotees – and fans of other musics as well – can find common ground. The recording offers a chamber music for modern times – one that brings together people of different perspectives and broadens their cultural experience, just as it did in an earlier age.

Esperanza first took the world by storm in 2008 with her self-titled debut recording that spent more than 70 weeks on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. Spalding was booked on the Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, the CBS Saturday Early Show, the Tavis Smiley Show, Austin City Limits and National Public Radio. Other highlights included two appearances at the White House, a Banana Republic ad campaign, the Jazz Journalists Association’s 2009 Jazz Award for Up and Coming Artist of the Year, the 2009 JazzWeek Award for Record of the Year, and many high profile tour dates, including Central Park SummerStage in New York and the Newport Jazz Festival. 2009 was capped by an invitation from President Obama to perform at both the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Oslo, Norway – where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded – and also at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert.

In early 2010, Spalding was the subject of an in-depth profile in The New Yorker, she was also featured in the May 2010 Anniversary issue of O, The Oprah Magazine’s “Women on the Rise” (in a fashion spread that features portraits of 10 women who are making a difference in various careers), and she was again nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association for their 2010 Jazz Award for Up and Coming Artist of the Year.

“I’m confident that this music will touch people,” she says of Chamber Music Society. “We all want to hear sincerity and originality in music, and anyone can recognize and appreciate when love and truth are transmitted through art. No matter what else has or hasn’t been achieved on this recording, those things are definitely a part of this music. Those are the things I really want to deliver.”
