Bruce Lee Honored With New Birthday Song

A BIRTHDAY SONG FOR THE “LITTLE DRAGON” – BRUCE LEE

Two Industry Veterans Team Up To Honor A Legend

What happens when two fans of Bruce Lee from different parts of the world first “meet” online? They decide to write a musical tribute to their idol. And which is what happened when Hong Kong-based music marketing executive Hans Ebert, Chairman of We-Enhance Inc and Yorkshire-born singer-songwriter Jon Harrison, based in the UK, have done with a song that started life as “Little Dragon.”

With lyrics from Ebert, former Executive Director for Universal Music and EMI Music, whose credits include working with David Bowie, Gorillaz, Robbie Williams and others and turning Chinese songs into English hits for acts like Danish band, Michael Learns To Rock and UK-based artist Stewart Mac, Harrison turned these into music.

The result is a song recorded and produced to commemorate what would have been the late martial arts icon’s 70th birthday on November 27th of this year.

Says, Harrison, “Meeting Hans in person on a trip to Denmark, our discussion and finding of the mutual respect for all things Bruce Lee, sparked off the idea to write the song as a tribute to the man and legend and which we hope will resonate with other fans of the martial artist. The hope is that anybody who has suffered a significant loss in their lives can feel a degree of comfort in the lyrics and message of the song.”

Harrison thought to play the demo of the song to his musical collaborator and album co/writer Russ Ballard.

Ballard just teemed with ideas for it and, like the Beatles’ Hey Jude, has taken a sad song and made it better with there being Radio and Acoustic versions of the song.

As both lead singer and Guitarist in the band Argent, Russ Ballard wrote “God Gave Rock And Roll To You” and hits for the band Rainbow such as “Since You’ve Been Gone”, Three Dog Night’s “Liar”, Hot Chocolate’s “So You Win Again” and “Winning” for “Santana. With his additions, “Little Dragon” became the song it is today – “Dragonfly.”

With a renewed interest in Bruce Lee and a number of books and film projects based around the life and times of the late action star, Ebert, Harrison and Ballard are looking at the song “Dragonfly” as being part of one of these projects and also the start of something new – a musical and conceptual project – inspired by Lee.

Since their formation in 2003, Ocala, Florida’s A Day To Remember have grown from a small band with a dedicated local fan-base into a worldwide phenomenon, gaining the respect and adoration from their peers as much as their fans. This hasn’t been an overnight success story – A Day To Remember have worked hard to win over every fan they’ve made. Over the course of four albums, the band has sold out entire continental tours, landed a Top 15 Billboard debut and topped the Billboard Indie Albums Chart.

A true testament to the diligence and hard work that A Day To Remember puts into their music, What Separates Me From You shows the band’s widening spectrum and is certainly the triumphant next step in their already shining career. They have perfected a genre and their latest effort enhances their already impressive catalog, hitting harder and bouncing bigger than ever before.

US tour dates are currently underway with a major spring tour announcement coming.

THE DECEMBERISTS PARTNER WITH THE IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT & PHOTOGRAPHER AUTUMN DE WILDE FOR LIMITED DELUXE BOX EDITION OF THE KING IS DEAD

THE DECEMBERISTS PARTNER WITH THE IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT & PHOTOGRAPHER AUTUMN DE WILDE FOR LIMITED DELUXE BOX EDITION OF THE KING IS DEAD

The Decemberists have partnered with The Impossible Project and photographer Autumn de Wilde to create a DELUXE BOX EDITION of The King Is Dead, their forthcoming Capitol Records album which will be released on January 18, 2011. Rough Trade Records will be releasing The King Is Dead in the UK and Europe on January 17. The preorder of the set has launched today exclusively at Decemberists.com.

Each of the 2,500 limited edition box sets will be unique, with every one containing a one-of-a-kind original Polaroid photo by de Wilde. The linen-wrapped clamshell box will have a foil-stamped cover, and will also include the CD, 180-gram white vinyl with an exclusive cover design, the DVD Pendarvia (a 30-minute short film by Aaron Rose documenting the making of the album), a 72-page hardcover book featuring over 250 photos by de Wilde and illustrations by Carson Ellis, and a signed Giclée print of an exclusive illustration by Ellis. A sample of the DELUXE BOX EDITION can be viewed at Decemberists.com.

The project was made possible by Impossible, who provided de Wilde with the vintage Type 100 “peel-apart” Polaroid film necessary to capture the 2,500 individual photos that were taken during the album’s recording sessions at Pendarvis Farm outside of Portland, Oregon, and in de Wilde’s hometown of Los Angeles, California.

THE IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT

Impossible keeps analog instant photography alive by passionately manufacturing various brand new and unique analog instant films for Vintage Polaroid cameras. Other than the highly standardized, traditional Polaroid film, Impossible films push analog instant photography beyond all traditional limits and offer a new, broad range of possibilities, characteristics and results. Therewith Impossible prevents more than 300,000,000 perfectly functioning Polaroid cameras from becoming obsolete, changes the world of photography and keeps variety, tangibility and analog creativity and possibilities alive. AUTUMN DE WILDE

Autumn de Wilde is a Los Angeles based photographer and videographer best known for her portraits of musicians. In addition to The Decemberists, de Wilde has worked with the likes of Arcade Fire, Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple, The Flaming Lips, Spoon, The White Stripes, Wilco, and Willie Nelson. Visit her website at www.autumndewilde.com.

THE DECEMBERISTS

The Decemberists are a rock band from Portland, Oregon. The King Is Dead is their third album for EMI’s Capitol Records, and their sixth album overall. It marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the band’s wildly ambitious and widely acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards of Love. Produced by Tucker Martine, the album features Americana luminary Gillian Welch on seven tracks and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on three tracks. Rolling Stone has already called it “the most pastoral, rustic record they’ve ever made,” while SPIN declared it “a bold, straight-up folk-rock record, perhaps their most accessible one yet.”

Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized Benefit for Natty Brooker

Event: The Perfect Transcription – A Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized party (in aid of Natty Brooker)
Location: The Piston – 937 Bloor St. West – Toronto, Canada
Date: Saturday December 4th, 2010
Time: Doors @9:30pm – first band at 10pm

On Saturday, December 4th 2010 at The Piston (937 Bloor W.) members of Toronto’s shoe-gaze/space rock/psych-rock and folk music scenes will come together for a very special live musical tribute to underground music pioneers: SPACEMEN 3 & SPIRITUALIZED

The event, titled: THE PERFECT TRANSCRIPTION (a play on the title of a Spacemen 3 LP called The Perfect Prescription) is not just your average music tribute show though. This show has a very special purpose, and that purpose is to help support an important contributing member (both musically and visually) of both Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized named NATTY BROOKER, who is very ill and struggling to get by.

Natty Brooker, was the original drummer for Spacemen 3, and was also the artist responsible for much of the bands artwork and overall aesthetic. Natty introduced founding members Pete Kember and Jason Pierce (aka Jason Spaceman and Sonic Boom) to blues and gospel music (a major influence on their respective sounds); he played drums on the first Spacemen 3 album Sound of Confusion; and also appeared on the classic demos release Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To.

It was also Natty’s iconic Devil and Angel original artwork design that adorned the first Spiritualized album cover “Lazer Guided Melodies”, and it was his endlessly recurring threes that graced the last Spacemen 3 album “Recurring”.

Sadly, Natty has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has been unable to work due to his illness, and those nonexistent Spacemen 3 music royalties just don’t pay his bills (which is a sad reality for many underground or “critically acclaimed” musicians/artists who are stricken with debilitating illnesses).

So… seeing that many of Toronto’s shoe-gaze/space-rock/psych-rock and folk musicians claim Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized as a major musical influence… The idea to enlist their help in performing at this important tribute benefit show for Natty came quite easily for show organisers: Davy Love (DJ and founder of Blowup and Spacemen 3 Spiritualized fan) and good friend: Will Carruthers (former bass player for Spacemen 3/Spiritualized).

The Perfect Transcription – A Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized party (in aid of Natty Brooker)

In addition to the live music element… this event will also celebrate the fantastic, mind-bending artwork of Natty Brooker. Will Carruthers has arranged to have some of Natty’s famous artwork adorn the walls of The Piston as he did at galleries in Los Angeles, London, Sheffield, Berlin, and New York over the past 6 months.

Will has even arranged for some very limited edition, signed and numbered prints of Natty’s work including the iconic Angels & Devil, and Recurring 3’s to be shipped from the UK, and sold at this event.

The musical line-up for the evening is as follows:

Speedway (specially reunited for this show only!) * Flowers Of Hell * The Hoa Hoas
The Pow Wows * The Blooming Rosebuds * Drunk Woman * The Disraelis
Ostrich Tuning * The Auras * The Mighty Oaks * Proof of Ghosts
Panarama * Hollowphonic * Make Joy Cry

Plus some very cool, secret surprise guests!!!

100% of the profits from the show will be go directly to Natty Brooker

Lelia Broussard’s New Masquerade EP

Lelia Broussard has the kind of bluesy voice that is perfect for romantic comedy films. It fills up the room with hope and warm optimism. Throughout most of November, she’s been cruising the west coast on her CD release tour with Bess Rogers, and now they’re onward to the east coast. In fact, she’ll be in the PA area the first week in December, the location where she recorded her first record at 15, Louisiana Soul. Broussard is a ragin’ Cajun born in Lafayette, Louisiana. Now, she has a handful of hits off her new album, Masquerade.

This new album will really cater towards the wintery feeling of loneliness. It will pull you out of the snow. Lelia plays on those emotions. Much like her friend and fellow musician, Allison Weiss, she sings about the feelings in relationships that make you stronger in the end. Weiss was also on tour with Broussard and Rogers, and there’s something to be said about that dynamic, and this semi-new face of music. A group of gals are putting themselves on the map and their sound can only be categorized as ‘cute.’ Aside from Broussard, Rogers and Weiss, we can also add musicians Lauren Zettler and Jenny Owen Youngs to the mix. I call it the ‘feel good about being the awesome girl you are’ music.

In Masquerade, Broussard’s big hit and fan-favorite will be “Satellite.” She sings, “When no one can see me / nobody really knows me at all / Would you be my satellite?” Her song “Hipster Bitch” will make you giggle. The lyrics talk about a girl in a bar she can’t compete with, who dresses, drinks and acts a certain way that makes her a total hipster. The song that really exposes a darker, raw element in Broussard is “Heart Collectors.” She hits the mark with her words, and her voice is so fragile and sudden when she sings: “The next horizon always seemed brighter than the lies / And I can follow every impulse like a moth to a lamp / I wanna go home again, but I don’t know what that is.”Ain’t that the truth…

One thing’s for sure, southern sweetie Lelia Broussard, is putting her stamp on soulful indie pop. Have a listen to her new EP, and jump on the bandwagon. The girls are back in town.

Toro Y Moi announces sophomore album, Underneath The Pine

Toro Y Moi announces sophomore album, Underneath The Pine

Toro Y Moi

Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) rose to the fore of the music blogosphere in summer 2009 when he and a few peers made their hazy bedroom recordings the most talked-about sound of the season. Critics across the board took notice of the range of his compositions, and his debut album, Causers of This, showcased his ability to make elements of Brian Wilson’s pop, 80s R&B, and Stone’s Throw hip hop coalesce into a distinct sound that’s as suitable for a dancefloor as it is a pair of headphones.

When Chaz first signed to Carpark Records, the plan was to release two records in 2010– one electronic and one with live instrumentation–and although it didn’t quite fit into the same calendar year as his debut, Underneath the Pine is that latter offering. This release sees him following the same creative urges to completely different ends. Having spent the year listening to film composers like Ennio Morricone and François de Roubaix, Bundick returned to his home in Columbia, the birthplace of many Toro tracks of yore, to bring his new ideas to fruition. The result of these sessions is an album evocative of R. Stevie Moore’s homespun ruminations, David Axelrod’s sonic scope, Steve Reich-ian piano phrasing, and the pervasive funk of his first record. Underneath the Pine announces a new phase for an artist whose talent defies classification.
