Acrylics Debut New Video for “Sparrow Song” Prepare for North American Tour with Junip

Acrylics – Sparrow Song video featuring Caroline Polachek

“these two don’t get nearly enough credit for being so subtly weird” – Gorilla vs. Bear

“A perfectly-constructed debut full-length…filled with acoustic jewels that recall sunshine pop more often than the Brooklyn duo’s lo-fi contemporaries” – American Songwriter

“Like their sonic stepcousins Stars and Headlights, this breathy, ’80s-loving boy-girl duo are not only attentive to the spoils of love, but also to its sacrifices.” – SPIN 7/10

Brooklyn duo Acrylics (aka Molly Shea and Jason Klauber) have released a new video for their single, “Sparrow Song.” Taken from their debut LP, Lives and Treasure, out now on Friendly Fire Recordings, the track features the celestial guest vocals of Caroline Polachek (Chairlift). After performing several sets at SXSW this year the band will kick off a North American tour in April with Swedish act Junip.
Produced by New York based video production collective House Plants, the video looks like a new age daydream loaded with fantasy-like imagery from floating cats to ribbon dancers. The imaginary clips gently compliment the track’s synth -driven euphoria.

With the help of producers Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift), Matt Boynton (Gang Gang Dance, MGMT), Britt Myers (Yeasayer, Chairlift) and mastering engineer Chris Gehringer (Rihanna, Drake, Nas), Lives and Treasure follows their 2009 Terrible Records debut EP, All of the Fire. Be sure to catch Acrylics in a town near you as they tour across the country this Spring!

Seminal Post-Punk Group Bitch Magnet To Reunite At All Tomorrow’s Parties

Bitch Magnet, the pioneering post-punk band from the 80s (and some of the 90s), will reunite at All Tomorrow’s Parties “Nightmare Before Christmas” festival, which will take place Dec 9-11 at Butlins Holiday Camp in Minehead, UK.

The show will mark Bitch Magnet’s first live performance since 1990, and the first onstage appearance of the band’s original recorded lineup – Orestes Morfín (drums), Sooyoung Park (bass and vocals) and Jon Fine (guitar) – since 1989.

Bitch Magnet was formed in the fall of 1986 by Fine and Park, when the two were sophomores at Oberlin College. In 1987, they convinced Morfín – then known as Orestes Delatorre – to sign on.

In January 1988, they recorded their debut mini-LP Star Booty in three days. The band self-released it in the fall of that year on their Roman Candle label, and the band began performing and building a following in key US cities. The pressing of 1,000 copies sold out quickly and the band was signed to The Communion Label in the US and Shigaku/What Goes On in the UK. Both labels reissued Star Booty and released the widely-acclaimed Umber.

Amid a wave of extraordinarily positive notices in the British and European press, the band toured Europe, with Dave Galt and Bastro/Squirrel Bait founder David Grubbs on guitar, in fall of 1989. Following the tour, with Grubbs on guitar, the band recorded the single “Valmead.”

The trio lineup of Fine, Morfín, and Park reconvened in the early spring of 1990 to record what would be their final album, the hugely influential Ben Hur. The album is now often cited as a key inspiration for what would become known as “post-rock.” The “Valmead” single cracked the Top 20 on the British independent charts, and the band toured the US and Europe that year.

Bitch Magnet played its final show on December 30, 1990 in Holland at Groningen’s Vera Club. After the band quietly split up, its video for Ben Hur’s “Mesentery” garnered airtime on MTV in the US and Europe. In 2004, Mojo magazine named Umber one of its “Lost Albums You Must Own.”

Much like their contemporaries in Slint, in the years following their breakup, Bitch Magnet has been recognized as a significant influence on generations of aggressive and musically complex bands, including Don Caballero, Rodan, June of 44 and Battles.

Currently on the road with G. Love and Special Sauce through April, The Belle Brigade have announced that they will hit the road this summer as special guests of Canadian songstress k.d. lang. The tour, which visits several music festivals across the U.S. and Canada, begins June 17th in Toronto and winds up July 15th in North Carolina. The band will also play a special show with Lang at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in April 11th. All upcoming tour dates are below.

Fronted by siblings Barbara and Ethan Gruska, The Belle Brigade are touring in support of their upcoming self-titled debut album, which will be released by Reprise Records on April 19th, 2011. The album is currently available for pre-order on iTunes, where two tracks, “Losers” and “Where Not To Look For Freedom,” are available for purchase now. On week of release, The Belle Brigade will make their network television debut performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Inspired by Barbara and Ethan’s love for Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder, The Belle Brigade’s debut album is chock-full of artfully arranged, freewheeling songs that brim with breezy, California melodies and bracing pop harmonies, fueled by the driving rhythms Barbara plays on drums. A longtime fixture on the Los Angeles music scene, Barbara is a sought-after live drummer who toured with Inara George and Jenny Lewis before she picked up a guitar and formed the band with her singer-songwriter younger brother Ethan two years ago. Raised in a musical family (their father is songwriter/composer Jay Gruska and their maternal grandfather is renowned film composer John Williams), Barbara and Ethan have a strong familial chemistry, which, along with their obvious songwriting gifts, has resulted in one of the most thrilling debut albums of the year.

Backed by their talented band (bassist Keith Karmen, keyboardist Aaron Arntz, electric guitarist Harlan Silverman, and drummer Mike Green), Barbara and Ethan were the “belle” of this year’s SXSW Music Festival, performing at the KCRW, WFUV, WBR, and Chop Shop showcases. Check out with the critics have been saying:

“It says something about the stickiness of The Belle Brigade’s songs that they can not only endure but prevail during the onslaught of noise at South by Southwest this weekend. … They’re naturals, basically, with songs that are supernaturally tight and catchy; though not loud, the band’s performance at the Chop Shop show generated a half-dozen internal jukebox hits.” — Randall Roberts, The Los Angeles Times

“The brother and sister team from LA, bring beautiful harmonies to their quirky folk rock.” – SPIN

“…memorable voice and considerable charisma within songs that gleam with hooks and pour over with earnest emotion…” – Ann Powers, The Los Angeles Times

“Not quite country, not quite folk, and too complex to be described as plain as indie, The Belle Brigade are the most promising freshman act in current musical class of mostly fifth-year seniors.” – NY Post/Popwrap

“The Belle Brigade’s live show was energetic, uplifting and exceptionally earnest; you can’t help but fall in love with them a little bit. Their entire set was a treat, but one highlight was when Barbara went back behind the kit to play drums. Take a listen to “Sweet Louise” off their upcoming album” — Aurgasm

Le Butcherettes release iTunes Live: SXSW EP, announce more U.S. dates surrounding May album release

Le Butcherettes release iTunes Live: SXSW EP, announce more U.S. dates surrounding May album release

Mexico City garage-punks make huge impact at SXSW

“The best act I saw: Le Butcherettes singer Teri Gender Bender is something of a stunner. She can howl, she can yell, she can growl the letter “R” into multi-syllables, and she needs little more than one ferocious drum beat to have her way with a song. And just in case you’re not paying attention when Teri sings that she’s sick of you, she’ll do a backward stage dive.”– LA Times

“Le Butcherettes was the best band I saw on Thursday night, and also one of the best bands I’ve seen anywhere in a very long time.” — Jim DeRogatis, WBEZ

“Any band who rocks this hard and leaves the crowd looking this limp and sweaty – some even splattered with a little fake blood – deserves some sort of honorary prize.” — LA Weekly

The rampantly raved-about garage-punk trio Le Butcherettes have released an iTunes exclusive live recording captured during SXSW. The 6-song live recording iTunes Live: SXSW features 3 tracks not available on Le Butcherettes forthcoming debut full-length, Sin Sin Sin available in May.

Surrounding the release of the trio’s album debut, Le Butcherettes will continue to floor audiences (as they have many writers like those quoted above) this spring, playing shows with Deftones and The Dillinger Escape Plan as well as headlining an L.A. album release party on May 10th. See complete dates below.

Led by 21-year-old vocalist/guitarist/pianist Teri Gender Bender (a recent transplant to L.A. from Guadalajara, Mexico) Le Butcherettes bring a brazen intensity and playful, hook-laden simplicity that hacks to pieces all forms of pretension and excess. Upon relocating to Los Angeles in late 2010, Teri recruited renowned drummer Gabe Serbian (The Locust) and bassist Jonathan Hischke (Hella, Broken Bells) round out the lineup.

Check out MP3s for the first tracks from the album, “Henry Don’t Got Love” HERE and “New York” HERE.

The band’s songs and wildly cathartic live shows often draw comparisons to Karen O, Patti Smith Bikini Kill and other female-fronted rock groups. But, there’s a theatricality to Le Butcherettes that brings a further reaching sense of mystery and imagery to the band.

Le Butcherettes’ full length debut, Sin Sin Sin was produced by Omar Rodriguez Lopez, who also plays bass on all of the album’s tracks, and will issue the album May 10th, 2011 on Rodriguez Lopez Productions via Sargent House.

Released on February 8th, the band teamed up with My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and producer Charles Gonzales to create an album that is undeniably engaging and sure to enrapture listeners with every listen.

Check out “Lets Get Loaded” from Arise, Great Warrior

“I had a dream i was being chased by two lions…their manes shining in the sun and blowing in the breeze as they chased me across an african plain with no end in sight or shelter of any kind. hoping i could outwit them, i dove into a stream(thinking perhaps they could not smell me if i was underwater) but they dove right in after me and sank their teeth into my neck…and i remember laying there in the water watching the lifeforce flow from my body into the stream with a beautiful rainbow-like quality…almost the same way motor oil looks in a puddle of rain…and it just felt so peaceful…i understood it was all so natural…survival of the fittest…and i got the same feeling when i first heard the liquid strands of the fervor’s “arise great warrior” flow thru my ears…it all feels so natural and peaceful…a necessary part of life, new born and floating freely in the cosmos forever now.” – Jim James, My Morning Jacket

Paired with grooving bass lines from Michael Campbell and intriguingly mellow drums from Matt Herron and The Fervor is a complete package bound for rock playlists everywhere. A tri-label release between Jim James’ label Removador Recordings (digital), SonaBLAST (CD) and drummer Mat Herron’s label Karate Body (vinyl), the triple threat support is just another unique touch to “Arise, Great Warrior.” From multiple Showcases at the 2011 SXSW festival to a slew of national tour dates, The Fervor has set out to make waves in 2011.

Miracle Fortress Announces Long-Awaited Sophomore Release Was I The Wave?

Debuts First Single “Raw Spectacle”

“I’ve been waiting for a new Miracle Fortress album for quite some time… I’ve listened to [‘Five Roses’] more than almost any other since then. Really…ask my girlfriend.” – Austin Chronicle SXSW ’11 Pick “Ice Cream Man Friday Flavor”

“[Graham] Van Pelt and drummer just let the groove of his cerebral, bass-heavy “bedroom club” music do all the talking as a laser light show sprayed the ceiling and jaws dropped to the floor.” – Exclaim!

Montreal-based musician and producer Miracle Fortress (aka Graham Van Pelt) has announced the release of his anticipated sophomore album, Was I The Wave? out May 17th on Secret City Records (Diamond Rings, Plants and Animals). Acting as composer, arranger, producer, and engineer, Van Pelt here shows more of an electronic side than on his 2007 Polaris Prize-nominated debut Five Roses, which was a fan and industry favorite, gaining critical acclaim from SPIN, Paper, XLR8R and KEXP among others. Was I The Wave? expresses themes of alienation, anonymity, and the desire for intimacy, with the first side keeping a deliberately crowded atmosphere, and the second side more open and personal. In support of his upcoming release, Miracle Fortress has offered the first single “Raw Spectacle” for free download.

Was I The Wave? is available for pre-order on and comes with an instant download of the Pantha du Prince remix of “Raw Spectacle” in addition to the single itself. Fresh off this year’s set of heralded SXSW performances, Miracle Fortress will embark on a Canadian tour with US dates to follow.

When Saints Go Machine Release Video For “Add Ends,” New Track Off June 21st Release, Konkylie

Watch “Add Ends” video (directed By Dawn Carol Garcia) here:

The first visual representation from their gorgeous debut album, Konkylie, When Saints Go Machine’s “Add Ends” video utilizes a dizzying mix of narrative styles, something like a heartfelt, surrealist, sci-fi fantasy. “Because When Saints’ music has such a visual sound, more visual than most groups I hear, it was rather easy for me to draw a story onto Add Ends,” says Los Angeles director Dawn Carol Garcia. Building from the visual of riding quickly through a hospital in a wheelchair (“an image both bound and boundless”), the video for “Add Ends” is a collection of images as rich and nuanced as the music that inspired them.

An elderly and infirmed man has an altercation with a shady character on what may be his deathbed, which leaves him in the possession of a staff, which seems to be able to heal on touch. “Hermes’ staff, the Caduceus, is a concept I added in because it fit my perspective on hospitals,” explains Garcia. “It’s a symbol used for medical practice that is supposed to mean healing but in actuality it is the Greek symbol of commerce (a reality here that’s both fitting and tragic). I thought it would be nice if I could fix this error, for at least a moment, while riding in the wheel chair.”

The medical motif of the video is in keeping with the inspiration behind the song itself. According to the band, “’Add Ends’ deals with the topic of losing someone close to you and the strange ways your psyche is trying to work through the emptiness.” A lush, but sparsely arranged track, “Add Ends” forgoes percussion almost entirely, placing the intricate vocals on a bed of strings and subtle electronics. “We wanted to create a symphonic feeling based on electronics meeting classical instrumentation.”

The surreal elements of the video were achieved using a relatively low tech-technique whose effectiveness belies its simplicity. “We rear-projected the backgrounds on a wrinkled sheet,” Garcia says. “I like that it could have been done in 1915.”

Dawn works as a commercial and film director in Los Angeles. This is her second music video after Destroyer’s Kaputt. She’s currently in development on her first feature, a science fiction film called PALs.

CAKE’s new animated video for “Long Time” debuts today on MTV

CAKE’s new animated video for “Long Time” debuts today on MTV The video will premiere March 31 on MTVU and MTV2 as part of their Indie Music Month before moving into regular rotation.

Debuting at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, the album continues to receive acclaim with recent appearances on NPR’s “All Things Considered” as well as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Lopez Tonight, Conan, The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon and more. Meanwhile, their first single “Sick Of You” remained a Top 5 hit at both Alternative and Triple A radio for ten weeks.

The band recently wrapped up a headlining tour that sold out within minutes of being announced. The dates took them across the U.S., connecting them with their ceaselessly loyal fan base that have supported the band’s live performances since the release of their first album in 1993. CAKE will head back out in mid-April for another string of sold out dates, kicking off April 14 in Washington D.C. with stops in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and more.
The buzz continues with “Long Time,” which is already making a big impact at radio. The animated music video was created by French production company Callicore Films, an art studio that focuses on CG Art and the resistance against “the cultural dictatorship of media” – a perfect match for CAKE. Founded by distinguished French artist Laurent Mercier and his partners Linda Mercier and Xavier Semen, Callicore has worked with John Lee Hooker Jr., Arrested Development, The Buzzcocks, Marky Ramon and more. Their collaboration with CAKE resulted in the beautifully moving video for “Long Time,” a work of art in both storytelling and computer graphics.

“When we heard ‘Long Time’ we were extremely excited to create an animated video production for the song,” said Linda from their studio in Paris. “We have been following CAKE since the beginning and are big fans. The melody and lyrics of ‘Long Time’ brought us a multitude of choices, and together with the band we created a story of a vagabond and his monkey.” Adds Laurent, “No concession. No compromise. Just one direction. That sums up both Callicore and CAKE – the story goes with ‘Long Time,’ the metaphor of a vagabond sentenced because he didn’t follow the same road as others.”

Released on CAKE’s own Upbeat Records, Showroom Of Compassion is their first record of new material since the release of Pressure Chief seven years ago and marks the band’s first Number One album in their nearly two decades of existence. The album has been met by enthusiasm from both fans and critics alike, with the Los Angeles Times raving that Showroom shows CAKE is “in toned condition, turning out polished compositions that could fit in with its classic catalog” and Entertainment Weekly awarding the album a rock-solid B+, declaring Showroomas “remarkably fresh.” CAKE is John McCrea, Vincent DiFiore, Xan McCurdy and Gabriel Nelson

In addition, CAKE can now add bookmaking to their list of accomplishments. The lyrics to “Bound Away”, from the new album, were chosen as the subject and title of a limited edition handmade book, which includes a disc of the single. In creating Bound Away, the members of CAKE worked under the artistic direction of San Francisco book artist Pam DeLuco on every step of the production process, including design, typesetting, linoleum carving, letterpress printing, paper-making and book binding. Recycled and reclaimed materials are used throughout the book, including the band’s old 100% cotton t-shirts and denim jeans for the cover paper. Bound Away, lyrics written by John McCrea, and performed by CAKE with Illustrations by Rigel Stuhmiller, will be available on
