MOTHER’S GREEN Announces Release of New Album ‘Swimming In The Sun’

MOTHER’S GREEN Announces Release of New Album ‘Swimming In The Sun’

Canadian eclectic rock outfit MOTHER’S GREEN recently released their brand new full-length album, Swimming in the Sun. This album comes as a follow-up to the band’s first full-length, self-titled release, which hit stores in Canada in 2008. For Swimming in the Sun, founding member, vocalist and guitarist March Ciaccari tapped drummer Dean Glover, percussionist Greg Noguera, and bassist Mike Simpson. The album was recorded at BWC Studios (The End, Moneen) in Toronto. The album was then mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Converge, Mastodon) in New York.

Shortly after recording, bassist Nick Tipe entered the band to handle bass duties in the place of Mike Simpson. Swimming in the Sun was completed with no label support, and the band continued on to self-finance their new video for ‘Observation for the Day’, cut from the new album.

Track listing:
Swimming in the Sun
Observation for the Day
Catching Existence
A Night in Complete Awe
Conscious of the Free Side
Just Another
The Antidote
A Close Encounter
Checking Point
Tattoos Leave Scars (bonus remix)

Swimming in the Sun is available now in a 180g vinyl/CD combo pack at The new album is a sonic journey from start to finish— with warm guitars, pounding, echoing drums, and resonating bass. MOTHER’S GREEN promises to reach a wide fan base; followers of 90’s rock groups like Soundgarden and Foo Fighters and modern-day stoner rock and sludge metal bands like Mastodon, Baroness, and everything between will enjoy Swimming in the Sun.

MOTHER’S GREEN formed as the brainchild of singer/songwriter/guitarist March Giaccari in Ontario in 2008. Shortly after formulating his idea for MOTHER’S GREEN and completing several songs, March wasted no time and hired bassist Brent Kervin and drummer Kevin Correia to help him complete MOTHER’S GREEN’s self-titled debut album, resulting in a raw and infectious collection of catchy grooves. MOTHER’S GREEN’s self-titled album did well for a completely independent release and saw several positive reviews.

MOTHER’S GREEN will be touring to support the new record, performing first on May 19th at the Bug Jar in Rochester, NY, located at 219 Monroe Avenue. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 9pm. Entry is just $5 and the show is 21+. The show will also feature openers Velvet Elvis, Babayaga, and Oceans of Insects.

Band of Skulls – Sweet Sour
And the press weighs in on Band of Skulls second album Sweet Sour:

“In this millennium, there are seldom few “rock bands” creating music with a shelf-life. Band of Skulls appear to be in this game for the long haul. Your move, The Black Keys.” PASTE

“….a monstrous crunch-off: metal-sized riffs and sugary harmonies existing in some nebulous region between My Morning Jacket and Mastodon. Be the first to hear the first single and title track, three minutes and 30 seconds of doomladen retro-chug that sounds like Jack White gone Black Sabbath.” SPIN

“This isn’t alt. This isn’t indie. It’s not French-electro-synth-ethnic-kudos-drums-‘n-bass. Band of Skulls is a rock ‘n roll band and one that should be taken seriously.” NY Press

“It’s been two years since Band of Skulls unleashed their debut album, Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, featuring some of the purest rock tracks in an auto-tuned world. Now the band gears up for their sophomore album, and based on the new tracks they played at Mercury Lounge last week, the Skulls want to show the alt-kids how real music should sound.” Nylon Guys

“London’s Band of Skulls offers dirty, dramatic modern rock, like Jet covering the White Stripes….” Time Out New York

“Miss the edgy rock sound of The White Stripes? Try the second album from this U.K. trio Must-hear track:The Devil Takes Care Of His Own.” People Style Watch

“…the rock songs are harder, the ballads are softer, the production value is pitch perfect.” V Man

“…a sneak peak of their still untitled upcoming 2012 full-length, has us certain that the album will be on repeat in our offices.” Teen Vogue

“Band Of Skulls trades effortless boy-girl harmonies without a hint of twee or irony in their new video, leaving the irony only to the cameramen-turned-maybe-ninjas.” MTV

“….a gritty burner that sounds like voodoo Kyuss.” Prefix

“Wanderluster,’ the album’s immediate standout, is set in a dizzying 7/8 time signature, throbbing with vintage guitar muscle and jaw-dropping prog-rock touches.” PASTE

“Sweet Sour is the rare modern-rock album that can span cliques or generations, uniting hippies and hipsters…” SPIN

SPIN’s 25 Winter Albums You Gotta Hear!

“Guitarist Russell Marsden and Emma Richardson have learned to let their voices mesh the way their instruments already did. ‘On Lay My Head Down,’ unhurried three-part harmonies evoke Crosby, Stills & Nash before a surprisingly heavy instrumental breakdown.” 3 out of 4 Stars – USA Today

“…a killer like ‘The Devil Takes Care Of His Own’ will make you sell them your soul.” People Magazine

“…gorgeous interweaving harmonies on the smoldering folk of ‘Close to Nowhere,’ the slow-burning Americana of ‘Navigate,’ and the dreamy acoustic balladry of ‘Hometowns.” All Music Guide

” ….’Bruises’ and ‘The Devil Takes Care of His Own’ boast wry, deliberate ferocity; and ‘Navigate’ features a guitar line that’s transcendental in its gloominess. ” Boston Phoenix

“Sweet Sour, their sophomore full-length, is torn almost evenly between spacious ballads and ass-smashing rock…” PASTE

Four out of Five Stars – Alternative Press

“… British alt-rock that fuses enough catchy hooks and splintery riffs to justify its album title. The sound falls somewhere between the bluesy rock of Dead Weather and the more psyche-pop approach of Silversun Pickups.” Colorado Springs Independent

“The towering basslines and frenzied psychedelic riffs of the opening title track, the old-fashioned grizzly blues of ‘The Devil Takes Care of His Own’ and You’re Not Pretty But You Got It Goin’ On,’ and the Pixies-influenced sludge rock of the epic ‘Bruises’ show they can still get down and dirty with the best of them.” All Music Guide

“…merging blues with punk minimalism and pop melodies, though their ace in the hole is the swapping lead and harmony vocals of Marsden and Richardson. ” Examiner

“…a bigger, more dynamic sound.” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Band Of Skulls are: Russell Marsden (guitar & vocals), Emma Richardson (bass & vocals) & Matt Hayward (drums).

Electric Sun opening up for Guns N Roses

New York rock band Electric Sun will be opening up for rock legends Guns N’ Roses this Sunday at the House of Blues in Chicago. The band is also currently on display for all to see in New York’s Times Square as part of a Toshiba promotion. For the next week you can see a photo of the band underneath the 2012 Times Square ball.

In support of their debut EP The Gilded Cage, Electric Sun is gearing up for the release of their video for the first single “Don’t Look Back,” which will debut in the coming weeks. Be on the lookout for the video’s release. The 5 song EP, co-produced by lead singer Vlad Holiday and Dean Baltulonis (The Hold Steady, Brand New, The Gay Blades, Lissy Trullie), was recorded in Queens, NY.

Electric Sun is Vlad Holiday (lead vocals/lead guitar), Amanda Carl (keyboards/backing vocals), Steve Kellner (bass guitar/backing vocals) and Dave Tantao (drums). After a year and a half of writing songs about optimism, something Holiday explains he found “by sitting back and viewing other people’s negativity” he presented the material to his long time friends. Holiday’s goal is to “inspire people to do great things…I want to add soundtracks to their lives and give them a bit of extra fuel to get through the day.” Carl, Tantao, and Kellner all backed Holiday’s vision and ES was formed.

YACHT – Shangri-La video

You Can’t Spell Shangri-La without L.A.

YACHT Releases New Video for “Shangri-La”

YACHT has returned in the midst of touring to release their new video for the title track off their new album, Shangri-La. Premiered today on LA Times, the video is a document of a perfect day in YACHT’s newly-adopted hometown of Los Angeles, California. From sunrise to sunset, the video follows our movements throughout the sprawling strangeness of the Southland, from ice-cream parlors to beach bonfires.

Shangri-La features dozens of extended members of the YACHT family–fans, collaborators, friends–sharing a space of our own invention, spotted with magical realism. Every point of light smiles. YACHT believes that Utopia, like reality, is not a physical experience, nor one dictated by the boundaries of a particular space. Rather, it’s a movable feast, defined by its capacity to adapt and change to new surroundings.

Basically, any place can be Utopia.

But it doesn’t hurt when that place is already Los Angeles.

Keeping it classy with The Darcy’s | The Darcy’s Interview

The Darcy’s, the Toronto rock quartet, recently released their new album, AJA and are starting their first U.S. tour. I caught up with guitarist/vocalist Jason Couse, the day before they headed to their first stop in California.

So how’s the touring circuit been?

Couse: It’s good. We haven’t really done this much year. We had one night off in Montreal, we then drove all the way through there and back, which was a nice taste for what was to come in the next two weeks. We’re just getting started for the season, and it’s going to be action adventure for sure.

Do you guys have a favorite song to play during shows?

Couse: Recently, we’ve been playing Home at Last off of AJA. It seems to be a good mood setter for the set.  Also, for us it helps us all connect to each other and feel warmed up and ready to cook for the rest of the time. That’s kind of the top track right now.

Is Steely Dan one of your band’s main inspirations?

Couse: Yeah, in an indirect way. It’s kind of the music that we all grew up with our father’s playing in the car and they were like, “Listen to this! You will learn to love this one day.” The interesting thing about Steely Dan is there is a very lustrous shine to it that people find it hard to break through. It’s kind of mischievous sometimes. Learning it as kids, we kind of took it for granted.  It hasn’t necessarily influenced all the music we have made but it comes down to their attention to detail, and their constant reinvention we respect in a big way.

What was your decision to release your album for free?

Couse: There are a lot of bands that are trying to put up music right now. Us, as a relatively young and new band, it’s really important that we try to maximize our exposure and grow as much as we can in our own way.  We try to have as many people as we can hear us, rather than make a couple dollars off a record. This way, we will be exposed to more people which is important to us because we didn’t work on AJA thinking about how much money we can make. Rather, it was us pouring ourselves into a creative project and trying to realize it was fully possible. After working that hard, you want people to hear it. You want it to be accessible to them. That’s what it’s made for, made for sharing.

The tough thing about that is there’s a lot of resources going into a rock band including touring, traveling. You need a van with lots of equipment, time off work, etc. It’s gets tricky at a certain point, but it’s all with a greater purpose in mind.

How does the crowd differ come Canada to the US?

Couse: We have yet to play a show in the US. Our first show will be in San Diego at the Casbah. Most of us have never been there at all, so we have four days to drive down from Ontario to San Diego.

So is your name inspired by Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice?

Couse: Yes and no. We kind of stumbled into the name.  There was a point when we were all in English Literature class together and we were reading that book at the same time. Alot of the work that we were reading for that time period was kind of dry, but when we ended up reading that book, we found him as an interesting character. That’s something that kind of fell into place and all of a sudden, we had a different artistic idea and different lineup and aesthetic. It has been with us a long time.

How is his character present in your music?

Couse: I guess you could say it in that way. In general, his demeanor and aesthetic is aloof and cryptic.  He was well-dressed, chose his words cautiously, but yet quite the cutting guy.  He’s a cool dude. He knows that he has something to offer and the way he carries him self through that, although he comes across as arrogant, he is still modest in a way. I think all those are interesting qualities. We are similar in that we don’t want to give too much away.

I love your music video, Don’t Bleed Me.  How did you guys come up with that?

Couse: Mike, the guy who directed it, had an apocalyptic scenario in the works for a while. He had been sitting on this idea and originally wanted to do it for a different song of ours. It was more fitting for Don’t Bleed Me and kind of through the process of us scouting locations and brainstorming different ideas to include in the video, there was a lot of discussion. Sometimes you have a video in mind when producing a song but there seems to be a massive gulf between what you write and when you work on the idea.

What’s the future for you guys?

Couse: Well AJA is fairly fresh, considering it just came out a couple weeks ago. We are going to be preparing for tour for a while, and also keeping busy with using our spare time for writing another album that’s coming along. We got a ton of ideas.

Scott Matthew at Rockwood Music Hall

In a small and cozy dimly light red room at Rockwood Music Hall, Scott Matthew graced the audience with his presence and talent.  The crowd quietly listened to the Australian born New Yorker play his new album, Gallantry’s Favorite Son, at his record release partyThe drums and bass were pushed far back as we listened to Matthew gently strum his ukulele.  There’s nothing more classic than watching a passionate musician only with his guitar, if there only was a fireplace crackling to the side, it would have been the perfect setting on a cold winter’s night.

The intimate environment went well with his personal songs about love and life’s complexities.  He sang some melodramatic melodies about past relationships, threw in some whistles and lightened up the mood.  It’s difficult to categorize his voice which makes it truly is unique and endearing. It features a touch of rasp, but yet feels pure, filled with vibratos and crescendos that create the right mix for his gentle folky ballads.

If you’re in the mellow mood, Gallantry’s Favorite Son is definitely worth listening to.
