Jaill – Traps album review

The greatest thing about being a music blogger is being able to discover that simple bands like Jaill still exist in our candy-coated, bubble wrapped, teen-pop infested society.

Jaill is an indie rock band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Band members, Vincent Kircher, Austin Dutmer, and Andrew Harris demonstrate a musical style that is very typical of the diverse characteristics of an indie rock band featuring basic rock structures, punk-rock influences, and fluctuations in their use of vocal counterpoints, harmony, and rhythm.

Some of their songs from the latest album Traps is a perfect example of an old school “emo” band. Songs like “Everyone’s a Bitch,” “Wasting a Lot of Things,” “Perfect Ten,” and “Horrible Things,” are characteristic of their punk music matched with dark lyrics.

On the flip side, this dual-pop group also exhibits songs with upbeat guitar strums matched with vocal fluctuations and counterpoints, which gives them a psychedelic pop sound. Songs like, “I’m Home,” “Madness,” and “Million Times,” still focus on the dark lyrics, but have a somewhat happy, plucky sound about them that differentiates them from the songs that were previously mentioned above.

The vocal counterpoints are characteristic of psychedelic sounds. It takes great practice to be able to allow the musical lines to flow freely from each other, but all the while, still occurring simultaneously with the vocal pitches and instrumental plucks. Who knows if this was just an accident or if they actually planned it, but whatever Jaill has going on seems to be working great for them.

And while this goes contrary to the happy-go-lucky, meaningless, superficiality of today’s music, it’s a refreshing slap-in-the-face from reality that not everything is a “Perfect Ten” and “Everyone [just might be] a Bitch.”
