Organizers cancel Pemberton Music Festival north of Vancouver

Canadian Press NewsItem/NewsComponent/NewsLines/ByLine

VANCOUVER, B.C. – A massive outdoor music festival that drew more than 40,000 people to a site north of Vancouver last year has been cancelled for this summer.

The three-day Pemberton Music Festival debuted in a mountain valley with acts like Tom Petty, Jay-Z and Coldplay.

Organizers say they weren’t able to reschedule another concert but hope the event will make a comeback in 2010.

The festival that featured rising Canadian acts alongside international superstars was mostly a success but also had some snags.

There were long waits on the highway between Vancouver to Pemberton, chaotic parking and an impractical shuttle system.

Some people spent eight hours in traffic chaos to make the usual 20-minute trip between Pemberton and nearby Whistler.

One of British Columbia’s biggest celebrations of music was nothing short of amazing with over 60 musical acts in three days. The Pemberton Music Festival was a huge success and is now one of the music festivals to rival. The three-day event brought in over 40,000 people to the small community of Pemberton, B.C. a visitor rate that has never been present even in the valley’s gold rush days.

The inaugural year of the music festival was better than gold for some, especially with a lineup which included: Nine Inch Nails, Metric, Jay-Z, Coldplay, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Tragically Hip, Buck 65, N.E.R.D. & more. Music fans finally got the chance to witness firsthand what a music festival is all about, and would agree it was worth the wait and the distance.

COLDPLAY KICKS OFF “VIVA LA VIDA” NORTH AMERICAN TOUR ON JULY 14th & 15th WITH TWO SOLD-OUT DATES AT THE FORUM IN LOS ANGELES

Band Plays Free Madison Square Garden Concert On June 23rd; Performances On “TODAY” Show And
“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” Confirmed For Later This Month

Coldplay will launch their “Viva La Vida” North American tour with two sold-out shows at The Forum in Los Angeles on July 14th and 15th. Fans snapped up an impressive 30,000 tickets in under 45 minutes time for the Los Angeles dates this past Saturday. Tickets for the tour are scheduled to go on sale this weekend in San Jose, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto and Boston. The complete tour itinerary is listed below with additional on sale dates to be announced. Details are available at http://www.coldplay.com or at http://www.livenation.com

The first few dates of the North American tour have been rescheduled due to production delays. “We’re very sorry, but we promise you a show worthy of your patience and understanding when we start in mid-July,” said Coldplay. Tickets already purchased for these shows will be honored on the new dates.

To celebrate the “Viva La Vida” tour and their upcoming album of the same name, the band will play free concerts in London (June 16th at the Brixton Academy), Barcelona (June 17th at Espacio Movistar) and New York City (June 23rd at Madison Square Garden). Tickets for these shows have already been given away via a contest, but fans are invited to turn out for Coldplay’s performance on the “TODAY” show on NBC on Friday, June 27th. Viewing is on a first-come, first-served basis outside the show’s Window on the World Studio, located at 49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The band will also perform on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” on June 26th.

Viva La Vida, scheduled for release by Capitol Music Group on June 17th, is now the #1 pre-order in iTunes history. Renowned director/photographer Anton Corbijn will lens the video for the album’s title track, which just jumped to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Viva La Vida” thus eclipses “Speed of Sound” (which peaked at No. 8 in May 2005), to become the highest-charting Hot 100 hit of the band’s career. It is currently No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs chart. “Violet Hill,” the first single from the album, is a Top 10 hit at Modern Rock radio and the accompanying video is receiving massive exposure on MTV (Big 10 rotation), VH1 (X-Large rotation), MTV2 (Elite 8 rotation), MTV Hits, mtvU, MTV Tr3s, FUSE, Music Choice and The N. Produced by Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, Viva La Vida is the follow-up to 2005’s X&Y, which debuted at #1 in 32 countries and has sold 10 million copies worldwide to date.
