Old Monk releases new single “Seymour”

Brooklyn trio, Old Monk, have released the first in a series of 2013 singles, “Seymour”, today on Eenie Meenie Records. Guitarist/vocalist Josh Carrafa met drummer Ian Burns while attending college in Colorado, bonding over a mutual love of music and performing together in various local bands. The two started to collaborate on songs via the Internet when Carrafa moved to New York to attend law school, writing much of what was to become their debut LP, Birds of Belize, before Burns followed to New York and Old Monk was formed with Tsugumi Takashi joining on bass. Old Monk released Birds of Belize, in early 2012. The L Magazine named the band in their annual “8 Bands You Need To Hear” in April of 2012.

“Seymour” was written by Carrafa, produced by Takashi and recorded/mixed by Dan Shatzky at Vibromonk in Brooklyn. There’s a sense of classic Midwestern power-pop, fueled by Pavement and echoes of Pinkerton. Of the track, Carrafa said, “What is it about? Yearning? You see, existence is an interesting situation in which to find yourself. On the one hand, sometimes you get to do some fun things. On the other hand, the things you are unable to do tend to seem a lot more fun than the things you actually end up doing. And on top of that, the things you actually do never seem as cool as the things people did in the past. The result is yearning. A permanent layer of yearning and dissatisfaction that covers everything that happens to you throughout existence. Often I sit, and I yearn. “Seymour” is a JD Salinger character in the story of the same name. He suffers from this affliction a bit. A fear of the future. A longing for the past. Constant dissatisfaction. And yearning. I like JD Salinger. He was a good American yearner.”

Old Monk will be performing throughout New York City and beyond in the coming months. Confirmed dates below.

Creative Adult shares EP stream – ‘Bulls In The Yard’ out May 14

Creative Adult have shared their new ‘Bulls In The Yard’ EP HERE which comes out on Run For Cover Records next Tuesday, May 14. This album takes the band further down the vibing, manic path of their debut and wanders further into flourishes of contemplative effects – laden post punk. These four writhing bursts are akin to an acid-fueled paranoia grafted together with the spastic energy of garage greats like MC5 and Murder City Devils. A short string of west coast dates will be announced soon to celebrate the release. Yesterday, Impose premiered ‘Bulls In The Yard’ in full and you can also stream the EP HERE on Creative Adult’s Soundcloud.

Creative Adult comes from the diverse musical breeding ground of California’s North Bay Punk scene. The band surged the scene last year playing shows with Ceremony, Nü Sensae and Lewd Acts alongside their debut 7” Dead Air, which was released on their own Broke Hater Collective. The four song sonic blast careens between the harsh, noisy punk of Scratch Acid and Gang of Four while carrying the brooding emotion of Joy Division’s darkest moments.

Bulls In The Yard EP Track Listing:

2 – Consumes Itself
3 – Chemical Glow

The Belle Game offer Blame Fiction for free download

The U.S. will have to wait a few more weeks for Vancouver quintet, The Belle Game’s debut full-length album, Ritual Tradition Habit, now scheduled for May 14 via Boompa, But in the mean time the band has made available the album track, “Blame Fiction”, for free download via Rolling Stone. Ritual Tradition Habit was recorded by John Raham (Dan Mangan/The Be Good Tanya’s/Frazey Ford) and takes the listener on a journey through twelve beautifully layered tracks, interrupted by the occasional chant, hymn and instrumental rumbling.

The Belle Game released the first single off Ritual Tradition Habit, “Wait Up For You”, on 7″ single last month on Boompa/Bella Union along with a video directed by Kheaven Lewandowski – watch here – before making their U.S. debut at the SXSW Music Conference. The band has announced a run of Canadian dates into the summer (dates below). A return to the U.S. is in the works.

Over the past two years, The Belle Game have built a burgeoning, loyal fanbase with the release of two EPs and performed with such artists as Gotye, Hannah Georgas, Karkwa and Said The Whale. The band takes intricate guitar and keyboard lines, anchored by dark pop rhythms, and weaves them into gorgeous, graceful melodies, which Vancouver’s Georgia Straight described as “a mix of pastoral pop and percussion-bombed art rock.”

Coinciding with today’s release of The House That Jack Built on Bella Union, Jesca Hoop shares the free mp3 download for “Hospital (Win Your Love),” which premiered yesterday as a stream on Paste. Layered by her resonating vocals over subtle synths, the track is an ode to tackling “a human quality that causes us to crave injury recalling childhood memories,” explains Hoop. Jesca Hoop will also be embarking on a west coast tour in August, joining fellow songwriter Jesse Harris on tour.

The House That Jack Built deftly showcases Jesca Hoop’s unflinching tendency to pull focus from widescreen to close-up. Part siren song, part grim warning, it achieves a perspective-warping balance between the haunting intimacy of Hoop’s delivery and an unconfined air of horizon-scanning grandeur from the outset – tempestuous, moodily melodic opener ‘Born To’ shares this striking duality with later highlights ‘When I’m Asleep’, ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Deeper Devastation’.

It arrives with more than a few splashes on its hands. Life and death; light and dark; sex and war; head and heart: The House That Jack Built offers up as much in celebration of the macabre as it does in mistrust of the familiar, with a twist of humor. It’s steeped in an allusion to biology, nature and humanity, but drops precious few clues as to whether its next rush of imagery is set to beguile or repel.

Since self-releasing Hunting My Dress, Jesca Hoop has continued her knack for collecting fans in high places. Having been endorsed by Elbow’s Guy Garvey – she presented his BBC Radio’s 6 music show on March 25th – she’s joined Eels on their US and European tour in 2011 and was invited by Peter Gabriel to sing backing vocals for his David Letterman and Jools Holland TV performances, and support and duet with him on his South American tour last year. With the release of The House That Jack Built, Jesca is set to pick up a host of new fans, high profile or not.

Purity Ring unveil new single from forthcoming album

Purity Ring is excited to unleash the new single from their forthcoming debut album. Fineshrine is the second song on their highly anticipated album Shrines (Last Gang), which will be released on July 24th. Available as an exclusive download through Exclaim.ca, fans can get their first taste of the new single here.

Purity Ring is a Halifax/Montreal-based duo comprised of Corin Roddick and Megan James. They make lullabies for the club, drawing equally from airy 90s R&B, lush dream pop, and the powerful, bone-rattling immediacy of modern hip hop. Megan’s remarkable voice is at once both ecstatic and ethereal, soaring wistfully above Corin’s intricately chopped drum programming, trembling sub-bass, and skewed vocal samples.

Fineshrine is Purity Ring’s most anthemic song to date—quite a feat if you’ve been paying attention to the band’s output since their inception only a year and a half ago. James’ lyrics are at once grisly and tender—a blood-soaked love song that sits atop Roddick’s mammoth, ear-burrowing production.

U.S. tour dates are listed below, with the recent addition of FYF Fest in Los Angeles on September 1st.

“[Purity Ring] create a pointillist synth wonderland, stretch and mangle Megan James’ clear pure voice, and rig samplers and lights together in a way that’s visually bewitching.”

“Keith Zarriello’s voice carries an eerie, mesmerizing eroticism.” – Pitchfork

“…one of our favorite songs of all time.” – Gorilla Vs Bear

Leading into the band’s homecoming, CD release show at Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY on 6/29 and in honor of the beginning of summer and summerlove, New York cult-favorites The Shivers have made their latest album, More, which is out via Silence Breaks, available as a free download over at The Awl.

The site has praised the Queens, NY natives, writing in a recent profile that that lead singer Keith Zarriello “writes stuff almost no one writes well anymore: dense, intelligent three- and four-minute rock songs that feel vital and necessary. He is, no bullshit, one of the best songwriters working today.” Click HERE to download a free copy of the album, and listen to the band’s latest single, “Love Is In The Air” HERE.

For The Shivers, More was a liberating labor of love reflecting influences from rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm and blues, folk, and everything in between. Using every dime they’d saved, Zarriello and Schornikow traveled to Manchester in the Spring of 2010 to record their latest record in an entirely analog studio. Over five days, the two worked tirelessly, capturing the tracks they had worked on in the small church in Queens where the band practices. The end result was More, an album that runs the gamut of American rock ’n’ roll, delving into everything from gritty Lou-Reed-inspired rock to the swaggering soul of Nina Simone. Starting with the brief piano elegy “My Mouth Is For My Love,” More segues quickly into “Irrational Love,” a bouncy organ-driven rock track with a chorus that sounds like it was plucked from 1966. The album teeters between the upbeat pop of tracks like “Used to Be” and “I Want You Back” to the heartsick, Leonard-Cohen-inspired ballads like “Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars” and “Love Is In The Air.” The album closes with the record’s title track “More,” a slow-building confessional that serves the record’s triumphant last call. It’s an apt end for a record that sounds like an apologetic love note, written on barroom cocktail napkin.

Hailing from Queens, NY, Keith Zarriello began writing music as The Shivers started back in 2001 and has spent the last ten years mining the depths of American music, developing a songwriting style that ranges from earnest, heartbroken ballads to ’60s garage rock revival. In 2004, Zarrellio released Charades, which featured the much lauded track “Beauty,” which earned universal praise from the likes of Pitchfork and The Guardian, and would end up being named Gorilla Vs Bear’s thirteenth best song of the decade. The album also caught the ear of an Australian, classically-trained church organist named Jo Schornikow, who joined the band as a full-time member that year. With Schornikow adding a delicate counterpoint with her piano and keyboard flutters, The Shivers spent the next six years touring aggressively in the U.S. and the U.K., and releasing a grand total of four albums, leading up to the ultimate release of More this year.

Ki:Theory Holiday Heart single (May 24) Ki:Theory Teams Up with Holy Fuck to Remix UNKLE for B-side

Download Holiday Heart

Ki:Theory (a.k.a. Joel Burleson) is a recording artist and producer who walks the tightrope between electronic and indie/alternative rock. Ki:Theory has also lent his adventurous sound to remixes for Daft Punk, Queens of the Stone Age, Ladytron, and Brazilian Girls among others. Having already rocked Bonnaroo and djed for Betsey Johnson’s during NYC fashion week, Ki:Theory has returned to the studio to work on new material. Today, May 24, he has released the single for “Holiday Heart.” For the B-side, he teamed up with Holy Fuck for a remix of UNKLE’s track “Natural Selection” which features The Black Angels.

“Holiday Heart” has a bright vocal melody, skittering beat, and an instantly memorable hook with something a little darker brewing beneath the surface. “(Holiday Heart) is actually a medical condition you get when you’ve been hitting the whiskey and summer sausage a little too hard (commonly around the holidays). I’ve always thought it makes a great metaphor for ‘to much of a good thing.”, explains Burleson. The b-side is an Olympian collaboration between Ki:Theory, UNKLE, Holy Fuck, and The Black Angels. “Natural Selection” is such a great song to start. I’m a huge fan of UNKLE, The Black Angels, and Holy Fuck. I did a remix for UNKLE once before [2007’s “Hold My Hand”], so getting asked to contribute to something all these great artists had collaborated on was just phenomenal. Holy Fuck had already laid some really nice textures and ambient soundscapes for the remix so getting in there with big drums and some leads seemed like a cool direction.”, says Burleson.

Ki:Theory has also recently contributed a remix of Daft Punk’s “The Son of Flynn” to Daft Punk/Tron: Legacy remix album “Reconfigured”. His song “Arms for Legs” is also featured alongside Sleigh Bells and Silversun Pickups in the trailer for John Singleton’s new film “Abduction”. This month, his remix of the song “Angelica” is also featured on the “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” soundtrack by Rodrigo y Gabriela with Hans Zimmer.

Razika Channels The Slits And 2-Tone Records On Their Stunning Debut, Program 91, Out 8/16 On Smalltown Supersound

Listen to/Download/Share “Nytt Pa Nytt” here

Few bands can make you instantly recall your favorite summer. Your first kiss. The first time you snuck out of the house.

In Bergen, Norway, Razika, comprised of four precocious 19-year-old girls, have discovered how to conjure these emotions, channeling a mix of innocence and rebellion, romance and heartbreak, and gift-giving and gun-slinging into their debut album Program 91 (out August 16 on Smalltown Supersound). Formed in 2005 and named after a code word used by the band to describe a cute guy, Marie Amdam, Maria Råkil, Marie Moe and Embla Karidotter Dahleng have been childhood friends since the age of 6, discovering their parents’ rock records before delving into punk as early teenagers. The album is a glorious contradiction; an exhilarating mix of ska, Riot Grrl, 60s girl groups, post-punk and upbeat, C86 pop that would make Phil Spector, The Specials and The Raincoats proud.

Influences aside, Program 91 finds the perfect middle ground between late-night, detached cool and youthful ebullience. “Nytt Pa Nytt” (“New on New”) and “Middelalder” (“Middle Ages”) recall the B-movie, Spaghetti Western ska of The Specials and The English Beat, while “Taste My Dream” and “Aldri” (“Never”) revel in ska-pop, despite a heartfelt longing in Amdam’s vocals. Elsewhere, the appropriately titled “Youth” is a light, airy summertime track that would go well alongside your Peter, Bjorn and John albums. On “Why We Have to Wait,” Razika’s cover of 1960s Norwegian pop group The Pussycats, Amdam sings, “Why we have to wait so long/People say we’re far too young.” Judging by the dexterity and maturity inherent on every song of Program 91, no falser words have ever been uttered.
