NY’s The Dig share “Angeline” from new Tired Hearts EP out 6/4 + National Tour

New York’s The Dig sucks the listener into their melancholy lyrics and dreamy melody with their brand new track “Angeline”. David Baldwin, one of the two front singers, complements the mix of smooth and sultry alt rock in this first track of the new Tired Hearts EP on June 4th, which is produced by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples In Stereo, Swans, Antony & The Johnsons). The band is gearing up for a new tour this summer (see dates below).

The Dig’s sound has been developing ever since the band’s two singers Emile Mosseri and David Baldwin started making music together when they were eleven years old. After meeting California native Erick Eiser, the three songwriters have been writing tunes and playing in different bands since they were 16 years old. Anchored by sharp guitars and a woozy synth backdrop, their last record, Midnight Flowers, produced by Bryce Goggin, came out in 2012 on Buffalo Jump Records. It recalls styles ranging from T. Rex to Brian Eno. Several of the songs off Midnight Flowers have been featured in a variety of TV/Film, including placements in Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, For A Good Time Call and most recently a song featured in the season finale of USA’s SUITS.

Following their acclaimed 2010 debut, “Electric Toys,” The Dig amassed a passionate national fan base with magnetic live performances, and have since shared the stage with bands such as Portugal, The Man, The Antlers, and The Walkmen. The band began writing new songs while on the road and between tours. “When we were writing ‘I Already Forgot Everything You Said,'” Baldwin recalls, “we had just gotten off the road and we were listening to a lot of Bob Dylan’s ‘Time Out of Mind.’ I think that influence found its way into that song particularly.” Mark Demiglio (drums) moved to New York from Texas to join the band following the recording of Midnight Flowers.

The Dig is proud to be releasing their new EP entitled Tired Hearts on June 4th, 2013 and doing a full US national headlining tour starting in early June and ending at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on July 12th.

Grandchildren Announces June Tour, Releases New LP

“As grand and celebratory as it is earnest and solemn” -Consequence of Sound

“The spirited don’t-define-me sound of Grandchildren is drifting and meditative in its cinematic splendor and filled with sudden, unexpected right turns that surprise and delight.” – Spinner

“[Grandchildren’s] glowing indie-electro-rock will warm your rain-chilled soul and soften your summer heat-hardened heart” – WXPN

Ernest Jenning Record Co. is excited to announce the release of Grandchildren’s second full-length album Golden Age, out today. The album is currently streaming in full. In support of the new record, Grandchildren is pleased to announce the dates for their upcoming June tour. Full tour dates are below.

Recently, Grandchildren released the video for “Sunrise.” The clip, which premiered via Consequence of Sound, was directed by Michael James Murray from Out of Town Films. Consequence of Sound describes the video as “a young girl [who] explores some darkened woods inhabited by taxidermied animals. Eventually, she comes across some hooded figures and walks through what can only be described as pre-pubescent disco. With reality and fantasy too blended to distinguish, it’s the perfect visuals for this otherworldly ballad.”

Produced by Chris Powell from Man Man and Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog), Golden Age is the band’s sophomore release. The band, who have previously toured with Man Man, Seabear and O’Death, will be touring this spring, including a record release show in May in Brooklyn.

Grandchildren began in 2008 as the solo recording project of Aleks Martray, forging intricately layered arrangements with only an acoustic guitar, a mic and a loop pedal. Since then, it has evolved into a 6 piece pop-orchestra known for its high energy live performances featuring dueling drums, circuit bending electronics and an instrument swapping horn section. On stage, the tiny 5’3″ frontman remains stoic, at the eye of the storm, encircled by a whirlwind of animated instrumentalists, belting out melodies in a voice that defies his own stature. Martray attributes Grandchildren’s eclectic sound to his nomadic upbringing in a military family across Europe and the US and his journeys throughout Latin America as a young adult:

“I think when you live and travel all over the world from such a young age your mind constructs a sort of map that is an amalgamation of all of these different worlds. I see the music as a soundtrack for this puzzle-like landscape that otherwise would exist only in my head.”

As their 2010 debut album Everlasting aimed to piece together the feel of various places, their new record attempts to collage together various points in time. Golden Age reads like a scrapbook in homage to that elusive era that serves as a reference point for how we’d like to remember “the way things used to be”, how they “ought to be”, but probably never really were. The recordings stem from this concept musically, pulling from a vast array of influences, and thematically, swirling around it from all angles with songs of hope and disillusionment, optimism and doubt, nostalgia and anticipation, caution and regret. The cinematically layered musical arrangements set the stage for unique vocal stylings that take on a range of characters in what Martray describes as something akin to method acting. “The lyrics are simple because it’s all subtext to the music. They’re more like the voice of a character and the music is the setting, and so the story unfolds between them.” As these scenes play out, what unfolds is a narrative about how we project our fears, hopes, desires on everything and everyone around us, forcing our simplistic ideals on a complex world.

Mother Falcon Releases New Album You Knew Today

“Diverse and inventive, “You Knew” positively spills over with ideas and enthusiasm — the hallmark of a left-field treasure to discover and cherish.” – NPR Music

A truly rare species of bird, Mother Falcon combine orchestral music and indie rock in a way that few have heard before; dynamic and infectious, the band’s debut album You Knew (out today) expertly layers the instrumentation of all eighteen band members on the band’s genre-defying album.

The group – which boasts three cellos, six violins, horns a plenty, several pianos, a bassoon and a glockenspiel – has developed a cult following in their native Austin, receiving as many accolades for their innovative film scoring as for their electric live rock club performances. They were even cited and as one of Bob Boilen’s “15 Essential Moments From SXSW 2013” and Stephen Thompson dubbed the group his “favorite young band of the festival’s opening night.”

Recently signed to Red Ryder Entertainment, the band is excited to share a booking agency with Andrew Bird, The Magnetic Fields, Sharon Van Etten and more as they continue to grow and start taking their live show on the road. Mother Falcon will be embarking upon a New York City residency at Joe’s Pub in June and another in Los Angeles in August, along with a string of regional tour dates in between including World Café Life on June 22nd in Philadelphia.

In just three years together, Mother Falcon has crafted a signature soundscape with their blending of traditional rock elements and whirling horns with strings that dominate and dance behind emotive vocal turns, balancing the distinctive croon of Tamir Kalifa against ethereal harmonies between Nick Gregg and Claire Puckett.

Old Monk releases new single “Seymour”

Brooklyn trio, Old Monk, have released the first in a series of 2013 singles, “Seymour”, today on Eenie Meenie Records. Guitarist/vocalist Josh Carrafa met drummer Ian Burns while attending college in Colorado, bonding over a mutual love of music and performing together in various local bands. The two started to collaborate on songs via the Internet when Carrafa moved to New York to attend law school, writing much of what was to become their debut LP, Birds of Belize, before Burns followed to New York and Old Monk was formed with Tsugumi Takashi joining on bass. Old Monk released Birds of Belize, in early 2012. The L Magazine named the band in their annual “8 Bands You Need To Hear” in April of 2012.

“Seymour” was written by Carrafa, produced by Takashi and recorded/mixed by Dan Shatzky at Vibromonk in Brooklyn. There’s a sense of classic Midwestern power-pop, fueled by Pavement and echoes of Pinkerton. Of the track, Carrafa said, “What is it about? Yearning? You see, existence is an interesting situation in which to find yourself. On the one hand, sometimes you get to do some fun things. On the other hand, the things you are unable to do tend to seem a lot more fun than the things you actually end up doing. And on top of that, the things you actually do never seem as cool as the things people did in the past. The result is yearning. A permanent layer of yearning and dissatisfaction that covers everything that happens to you throughout existence. Often I sit, and I yearn. “Seymour” is a JD Salinger character in the story of the same name. He suffers from this affliction a bit. A fear of the future. A longing for the past. Constant dissatisfaction. And yearning. I like JD Salinger. He was a good American yearner.”

Old Monk will be performing throughout New York City and beyond in the coming months. Confirmed dates below.
