Gogol Bordello Set To Release New Album ‘Pura Vida Conspiracy’ On July 23

Internationally renowned gypsy punk rock group Gogol Bordello return with their sixth full-length album Pura Vida Conspiracy via ATO RecordS and MapleMusic Recordings on July 23. Produced by Andrew Sheps, the new album was recorded in El Paso, Texas at Sonic Ranch Studios and is a powerful collection of 12 surging new songs. In celebration of May Day, an ancient public holiday known for raucous celebrations, Gogol Bordello offer up a stream of their rebellious new song “Malandrino” to get the party started.

The album’s title is derived from a Spanish slang phrase for “pure life,” which is a theme that resonates throughout the new material. The disc’s opener, “We Rise Again,” introduces the album’s limitless, all-embracing themes instantly, centered on a chorus of “Borders are scars on face of the planet.” The new songs are infused with ideas rooted in Eastern philosophy but also search for a means of joining fragmented parts and persons, and of creating a worldwide consciousness.

“For me music is a way to explore human potential,” Hutz says. “And that’s my main interest in life – human potential. Everyone knows there’s something inside of us that we’re not using. How do we get it? How do we reach it? Every single person knows that there’s something and nobody knows what it is. So at one point I said to myself, I’m gonna get down and get it.”

Gogol Bordello has spent the last decade getting down with that energy through their meteoric live shows and has earned a solid reputation as “the hottest global touring act to come out of New York (Billboard)” and “the world’s most riotous live band (Rolling Stone).” Their wildly energetic live shows are celebrated by fans worldwide and have brought them to nearly every corner of the globe and to the main stage of festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Rock am Ring, Reading and Leeds to name just a few. In addition, Gogol Bordello’s recordings have earned them critical acclaim worldwide and have attracted some of the most respected collaborators and producers including 2005’s Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike, produced by indie legend Steve Albini, 2007’s SUPER TARANTA! (produced by Victor Van Vugt) and declared by music critic Robert Christgau as “the best rock album of the decade. Period.” and 2010’s Trans-Continental Hustle produced by Rick Rubin.

Gogol Bordello will return to the US in May for select dates on their first club tour since May 2012 and will be performing at major music festivals around the globe this summer.

The Numerators share new song & tour dates

This week, Suicide Squeeze has released a new 7″ from Texas jangle-psych freaks, The Numerators. You’ve heard “Dead” & now BrooklynVegan is streaming the b-side, “Finally Sees,” for which Noisey has just shared the accompanying video for the track. The Numerators are currently on tour, catch these misfits’ twisted garage psych freakouts this spring.

George W. Bush. Cormac McCarthy novels. Chainsaw massacres. Texas has a reputation for being a grim place. Sure, there’s the rock n’ roll haven of Austin, the metropolitan hubs of Dallas and Houston, and the weird art commune of Marfa. But by and large, it’s a land of dry counties and conservatism. Which makes the demented psych garage of Lubbock’s The Numerators all the more compelling. Western Texas is perhaps the most inhospitable region of the state for a young band of misfits to combine a love of David Lynch’s twisted take on the ‘50s with a requisite dash of Lone Star homage to 13th Floor Elevators, yet somehow The Numerators have managed to thrive under such stark conditions. Now based in Brooklyn, the trio continues to belt out their hallucinatory reverb-drenched garage rock on their latest single for Suicide Squeeze. The “Dead” b/w “Finally Sees” 7” is limited to 500 copies (100 clear, 400 on black) with a free download code and is also available digitally worldwide. Pre order here.

Wampire shares new track + announces West Coast tour with STRFKR

Following the release of early singles “The Hearse” and “Spirit Forest,” Wampire are back today to share “Trains” from their forthcoming debut Curiosity. When asked about the origin of the new single, Wampire’s Eric Phipps said:

“‘Trains’ was written during a time when I was young and overly idealistic about love. A lady was driving me wild with her strange affection and I was naively waiting for it to ‘mean something’ or whatever. When she finally skipped town, I was sitting on a train that was delayed for some reason or another and started humming the melody that later became ‘Trains.’ By the time I got home I had the lyrics and rough skeletal structure of the song. Girls are like trains – you’re always waiting for a chance to be let on just so you can hop off at the next stop.”

Along with the new song, Wampire are announcing a run of West Coast tour dates, a handful of which are with STRFKR. Check out “Trains” and all upcoming Wampire tour dates below.

After forming Wampire, Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps steadily began to make a name for themselves in the same Portland, OR, scene that has produced labelmates STRFKR as well as Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It makes sense, then, that Wampire came to Polyvinyl’s attention when the duo opened for STRFKR at a hometown Portland show and that UMO’s bassist Jacob Portrait produced Wampire’s debut full-length, Curiosity.

The choice of Portrait was a natural one, with both Tinder and Phipps believing he’d be able to contribute almost as much to the record as they would. And so, in mid-August Tinder and Phipps each brought fragments of song ideas into the studio, before deconstructing, re-arranging, and fitting them back together piece by piece — at times lyrics and melodies were thrown out, brought back from the dead, or improvised on the spot.

This loosely structured approach made the process truly collaborative, with producer Portrait occasionally chipping in ideas for lyrics, arrangements, and instrumentation. The resulting nine tracks are instantly memorable, while defying easy categorization. Says Phipps, “We realized the record began to stray away from having a ‘sound’ and gradually became a platter with an assortment of sounds. The record showcases a flavor we haven’t quite dug into before.”

The album’s diverse combination of sounds ultimately helped give birth to its title, Curiosity — a word that invokes the listener’s wonder at what will greet their ears next, while also describing the overall curious tone the record possesses.

First single, “The Hearse” serves as the perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the band — its opening notes swelling instantly with electronic organs over a driving drum beat. By the time bass and vocals kick in, you’re already hooked. Elsewhere, “Orchards” weaves an infectiously breezy melody on the strength of vocal harmonizing, tuneful whistling, and undulating guitar lines. In some cases, Wampire’s unique rhythms are best described by the band members, as with “Trains,” a Motown-meets-Strokes track that Tinder perfectly summarizes like so: “It’s sexy, sounds huge, and by all means should be blamed for future babies.”

The album concludes with the equally sensual “Magic Light,” a song centered around a dark seductive bass groove that sets the tone for Tinder’s come-hither lyrics. It’s the kind of track that draws you ever further into the record’s beguiling clutches, leaving a lasting impression that remains well after its final notes have faded out.

Bitchin Bajas Announce New Album, Bitchitronics, Out July 16th On Drag City

Bitchin Bajas are back, baby! Their new album Bitchitronics, out July 16, 2013 on Drag City, is ready with the quickness we expect from the Chicago-based band – which is funny, since their area of expertise and mastery is in the area of synthetic ephemeral sonic languidity known more instinctively, inclusively (and let’s face it, irresponsibly) as drone music. Put it this way – they make slow music at a fast pace. Bitchitronics is their first realized record as a trio.

Since their first appearance way back in 2010, Bitchin Bajas approach has been simple – unfold tones via synth and keyboard, allowing micro-frequencies to press against each other in a way that pleases the ear, the mind and the soul. From record to record (three albums, a split 7″ and a split 12″, a cassette and an 12″EP), their process is redefined by confronting the technologies of formative and outmoded machines, sliding into different quadrants of the ambient/post-organic/electronic/and drone universe each time around. Thus, the experience of slipping inside their music seems so singular and pure, like floating naked in a sensory deprivation tank. Just us and our minds and the music. Simple, right? But other things occur underneath…

For Bitchitronics, the concept was: use tape techniques to create and then solve problems – loops and edits were there to make things fun and the music great in the style of experimental tape pioneers upon whose shoulders the Bajas play. Mission bitchin’ accomplished! Recording was mostly done in, all over and around a house in Fennville, MI with three tape machines reeling in the sounds – sometimes, in addition to sounds that have never seen the light of day, you’re also hearing the sound of the light of day on the tape (or when they recorded at night, evening stars). Two 1/4″ tape machines were utilized to make loops and execute the Bitchitronics sound system, one of which discreetly captured the combined sounds of the loops with live playing. Once done, it was back to HQ where edits of the 1/4″ recordings were utilized to create larger tapestries on the 2-track master tape.

You want to use the Bitchitronics method for yourself? That’s how it’s done! Taking the long path to realize this album makes for some heavenly music indeed.

Kate Nash Premieres Latest Video For Her Single “OMYGOD” on MTV, Announces Spring US Tour Dates

“There’s truth in most of what Nash sings about on Girl Talk.” – Pitchfork

“Bristling with white-knuckle rock romps and hot-blooded confessionals, Girl Talk finds Nash at her bravest.” – SPIN Magazine

“A fearlessly outspoken postpunk pop icon” – ELLE Magazine

“The epitome of strength and sass, even when she’s wounded” – The Daily News

British pop icon Kate Nash premieres her brand new video for the single ‘OMYGOD’ today on MTVU, MTV2 – Artist To Watch, & MTV Buzzworthy and is pleased to announce she will be returning to North America next month for another round of tour dates in continued support of her critically acclaimed third album ‘GIRL TALK’.

The video and single for her current release ‘OMYGOD’ (directed by Aram Rappaport) tells the tale of a love gone sour and the longing for better days. Kate, who wrote the song whilst on vacation, also stars in the summery video which involves synchronized swimmers, friends by the coast and a rather disgruntled Nash at times.

Due to popular demand since her last sold out North American tour on the east coast, Kate Nash will be returning to US turf this spring with a handful of west coast dates. Impressively, select dates are already selling out since announcing earlier this month. Supporting her on this tour will be Ottawa based Allie Hanlon (of White Wires) and her minimalist bubblegum, surfer punk-pop side project Peach Kelli Pop.

Hot off the heels of her international album release of ‘GIRL TALK’ in March, Kate is showing no signs of slowing down. Currently on tour in Europe, the fiery feminist has also found time to be an active global ambassador for her charity Protect A Girl with Plan USA, and Because I Am A Girl Foundation, having traveled to Africa in February to meet young and under-privileged girls in the third world, Kate has helped raise funds and awareness for those in need of education and empowerment. She also launched her Rock and Roll Afterschool project in the UK, which aims to actively encourage young girls from ages 8 to 16 to pick up instruments, join bands and express themselves via music and creative writing.

Also, in a continued effort to support and publicize the Russian punk band Pussy Riot and their imprisonment, Kate released the single titled ‘Free My Pussy’ for International Record Store Day this month and has continually used her profile to educate the public about the unjust goings on towards women across the world today.

In other news, Kate has announced she will be in the upcoming Jeff Buckley biopic ‘Greetings From Tim Buckley’ by Daniel Algrant. The film is based on the biography Dream Brother and will star Gossip Girls Penn Badgley and 28 Days Later actress Imogen Poots. Also this summer, Kate will also be gracing the big screen with the release of the upcoming indie flick titled ‘Powder Room’, starring Jamie Winstone, Oona Chaplin and Sheridan Smith. The movie is an adaptation of the Scottish play ‘When Women Wee’ and was produced by the acclaimed Damian Jones and James Cotton (The Iron Lady, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll). The comedy is set in a nightclub, and will explore the goings on within those tiled, marbled domains of the women’s toilets.

Kate Nash’s current album ‘GIRL TALK’ (Have 10p Records / INgrooves) is available in all good record stores across the U.S and available digitally on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

Watch Kate Nash’s latest music video for ‘OMYGOD’ and be sure to catch her live at one of the following North American dates this spring.

The Mavericks – In Time album review

In Time, the latest release from Miami based country group The Mavericks follows the pattern of their earlier works where diversity is the name of the game. Mariachi horns, country melodies, and Roy Orbison-esque vocals are found throughout the record but songs are diverse and almost all bring a new theme to the table whether it is the slinky surf guitar of “Come Unto Me”, which is also recorded in Spanish as the closing track “Ven Hacia Mi” or the upbeat ska horns of “That’s Not My Name”. Each track from The Mavericks proves to be a new surprise and listeners are never bored by the album in the slightest. Lead singer Raul Malo and the rest of the Nashville based band are much less Jason Aldean and much more Los Lonely Boys than most of what comes from Nashville, mainly due to the Latin influences that are felt throughout the record, from the Cuban danceability present on almost every song to the Tex-Mex shuffles heard on several tracks.

Possibly the best track on the album however is the subdued “(Call Me) When You Get To Heaven”, an eight minute long spaghetti western sounding opera, complete with faint jazzy flutes and chiming reverberating guitars while Malo croons “At night guitars will softly play for us/While angels beckon us to pray”. The track truly shows the range of The Mavericks as a group around the four minute mark when a gospel choir comes in repeating “Won’t you call me/when you get to heaven?” As the last original track on the album (it is followed by “Ven Hacia Mi”), it serves as a perfect closing piece.

Perfect for the upcoming summer, In Time may not be a staple at barbecues yet, but considering that it is the first time the Mavericks have recorded together since their dissolution in 2003, it is a solid album.  The Mavericks are also famed for their raucous live shows and they are on tour all summer in support of In Time. Biffy Clyro Cancel Remaining North American Tour Dates

Biffy Clyro have today been forced to cut short their North American tour and return to the UK immediately; Simon Neil has been struggling with a serious respiratory problem on the shows, including two nights supporting Muse at Madison Square Garden on Monday and Tuesday of this week, and was advised by doctors that he was endangering his long term health if he chose to continue performing on this run. Thus, further dates with Muse across the US and Canada, plus a second weekend performance at the Coachella Festival this coming Saturday, have now been cancelled.

The band wish to express how sorry they are that they aren’t able to carry out the full run of shows, and hope to confirm a new run of North American shows shortly. All UK and European dates this Summer should, however, remain unaffected.

Biffy have been out on tour supporting their new double album Opposites, which gave the band their first ever UK No1 in early February. Since the release, the band have been on an almost uninterrupted run of arena shows including a triumphant UK tour that culminated at the O2 in London last week.
