THE JAPANESE POPSTARS U.S. TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED NEW SINGLE “JOSHUA” FEAT. TOM SMITH (EDITORS) TO BE RELEASED MAY 24TH ‘JOSHUA’ GROUNDBREAKING FACEBOOK APP / USER GENERATED VIDEO – NOW LIVE

On June 21st, rising stars of the UK electronic dance scene The Japanese Popstars will release their new album Controlling Your Allegiance on Astralwerks. Hailing from Northern Ireland, the Japanese Popstars play an aggressive, darkly humorous, highly addictive brand of dance music that recalls the ‘electronica’ heyday of The Chemical Brothers, Underworld and The Prodigy, while keeping step with nu-electro contemporaries like Justice, Digitalism and Crystal Castles.

“Joshua”, the next single from Controlling Your Allegiance, features a guest vocal from Tom Smith from Editors, and will be released digitally on May 24. Controlling Your Allegiance features a host of further collaborations, including The Cure’s Robert Smith, Jon Spencer (of Blues Explosion fame), Chicago House legend Green Velvet, and psych folk singer James Vincent McMorrow. Together with four nominations for the 2011 Irish Dance Music Awards, The Japanese Popstars are well on course to be one of the rising acts of the Summer. Their video for “Destroy” (feat. Jon Spencer) just won Best Music Video at the AICE awards (Association of Independent Creative Editors).

As a prelude to the album launch, we are thrilled to present a groundbreaking new Facebook app, “Feed Joshua”, who is a baboon (as seen on the Controlling Your Allegiance album cover) that comes alive, creating a new online experience for fans and their friends, and enabling fans to appear in their own personalized version of a new music video for the track “Joshua”. This is a first of its kind for the industry, with the end result allowing each user to enjoy their own unique version of the online video.

How it works: Within a tab “Feed Joshua” on The Japanese Popstars Facebook page www.facebook.com/thejapanesepopstars lies Joshua – an animated baboon confined restlessly in his cage, hungry and howling. Fans are able to interact with this baboon, first by ‘liking’ The Japanese Popstars on Facebook to activate the program, and then by feeding him five of their Facebook friends, which in turn announces their friends have been eaten in the user’s news feed. Then the users’ image, along with the images of the five friends they have fed to the baboon, will appear in an actual Official Music Video, but one that is unique to each user and only viewable by that person. Each user’s video will be messaged back to him or her on May 27.

The Japanese Popstars have already earned a solid reputation for great live shows, having played the European festival circuit, Ibiza, and UK club dates. In the US the band has previously played dates in 2009 and 2010 including Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Electric Daisy Carnival in Los Angeles and Webster Hall in NYC and will return for their first run of shows in support of the new album in June/July (full listing of dates below).
