El-P & Killer Mike are Run The Jewels and announce tour dates

El-P and Killer Mike, frequent collaborators and two of the most celebrated names in rap in their own right, confirm rumors of a joint LP and tour today as Run The Jewels. El-P’s self-produced Cancer 4 Cure reanimated Brooklyn rap last year with his signature lyrical conviction and bruising production; he also handled all of the beats for Mike’s R.A.P. Music LP, which dropped a few weeks earlier. Both won the acclaim of media and fans across the globe and led to 2012’s legendary, hugely successful “Into The Wild” tour. One year later, the duo return to satisfy fan demand and their own creative urges with Run The Jewels, cementing their musical alliance with a full album of uncompromisingly raw, forward thinking hip-hop.

As a gesture of appreciation, El and Mike will release the self-titled Run The Jewels LP for free with tastemaking Brooklyn label Fool’s Gold this June, a partnership amongst innovators that feels totally appropriate. The independent label (founded by DJs A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs in 2007) has acted as a springboard for emerging talent since it’s inception, breaking international artists like Danny Brown, Duck Sauce and Kid Cudi. Fool’s Gold’s support for hip-hop iconoclasts is unparalleled, and the label will lend their midas touch to the Run The Jewels project by creating and releasing a limited run of specialty vinyl and merchandise for die-hard fans to be sold only on the Run The Jewels tour and through Fool’s Gold’s website and physical store in Williamsburg.

Run The Jewels will follow up the release with a sprawling US tour alongside Despot (currently putting the finishing touches on his Ratatat-produced debut album) and ex-Das Racist member Kool AD. The duo will perform their new material as well as solo songs for audiences who seemingly conjured this dream bill by sheer willpower. This summer, rap’s odd couple is on a robbing spree…

Trick Daddy – Dick and Dynamite album review

There’s a lot to be said for Charisma. In a day where anyone can plug a Wal-Mart mic into a laptop and call themselves a rapper, only the most memorable of personas will leave the stain of success on the listening populace. Trick Daddy is one of the few MC’s who will always have the collective consciousness of the streets, billboard hit or not. He withdraws from that earned credit with his mixtape release Dick & Dynamite.

Weighing in at a somewhat sizable 22 tracks, the Dade County Mayor goes the traditional route of sprinkling original works with freestyles over popular songs where he flexes his lyrical muscle. The variety of the mixtape somewhat dilutes it’s collective impact. It offers something for everyone, but perhaps only one group should have been looked out for here: the streets.

On D&D Trick two steps between chest-thumping rhetoric that made him a southern pioneer and a less successful “diamonds and girls” approach. He sounds hungry as ever if not reinvigorated when he firmly plants his flag on the project’s gruff Miami bass soundscape. Over the wondrously ambitious bounce beat of “Wait One Mfn Min”, Trick petitions his ornery guerrilla mentality isn’t a gimmick, warning (that) “since you started shit you gettin it worse”.

Over the “Niggaz In Paris” beat is where he truly shines, delivering the street influenced introspection that’s universally revered and longed for in the genre. It’s as if Trick purposely lured the listeners in with the absurdly catchy bounce then decided to take them to school on “Niggaz in Dade”, where he talks about the dwindling profits and increasing treachery of the drug game, warning “the dope game is done if we don’t tighten up and take this back to the 90s”.

That may be a dubious lament to some, but it’s what Trick Daddy does well, and the listener is better off with him in his comfort zone, as opposed to when he overextends with tracks like “Know How To Treat Her” that’s so trite he might as well use Das Efx wiggedy-wiggedy lyrics within it. It’s not that he doesn’t have the basic concept of how to appeal to the strip clubs, but then again it’s that he has a mere basic concept of radio-friendly records.

Gone are the days of “Shutup”, where he took the most befuddling of choruses nationwide. On the aforementioned as well as “Chevy” you can hear Trick trying to ignite a spark that just might not emit. Charisma will make people listen, but it won’t make people like it, and that’s this project’s fatal flaw. With too many swings and misses, this project definitely doesn’t reach the top of his catalog.

Trick Daddy is at the point of his long career where he should stick to his niche which carries this mixtape. More gritty, resonant music for Liberty City summers and less chasing of hits like a desperate young buck.

Chromeo to launch collection with Frank & Oak

DAVE 1 OF CHROMEO TO LAUNCH COLLECTION WITH FRANK & OAK

MENSWEAR BRAND AND E-TAILER FRANK AND OAK HAS ANNOUNCED A NEW COLLABORATION WITH DAVE 1 OF PROMINENT ELECTRO-FUNK DUO CHROMEO. TOGETHER, THEY’LL RELEASE A CAPSULE COLLECTION OF ELEGANT ESSENTIALS MAY 21.

“I had never designed a capsule collection before, and when Frank & Oak approached me, there were three reasons why I couldn’t refuse,” David Macklovitch (aka Dave 1) explained. “First, they’re a brand from my hometown of Montreal. Second, their background is traditional men’s tailoring. And lastly, they’re accessible and democratic.

“The inspiration here was the disheveled elegance of the South of France: the Stones recording Exile at Nellcôte, manly gents who aren’t afraid to pose next to a bouquet of flowers, the morning after a wedding…” Macklovitch said. “I like to think of it as a complete wardrobe: essential pieces that can all be effortlessly combined.”

The 18-piece collection-imbued with midnight blues, whites, and olives-blends Dave 1’s raw rock & roll aesthetic with Frank & Oak’s classic and minimal approach to design. The faded, low-cut tees ($30), minimal button-ups ($65), crisp white jeans ($75), and bold summer blazers (starting at $155), are all impeccably tailored with extra-skinny silhouettes (echoing Dave 1’s personal style).

“After meeting Dave and looking at his music and his personal aesthetic, I knew he shared Frank & Oak’s values and modern design philosophy,” said Frank & Oak co-founder and creative director Ethan Song. “This collaboration has worked so well because we’re aligned creatively, but we also both have something unique to bring to the table.”

To celebrate the collaboration, Frank & Oak will host an official launch party on May 15 in New York City. From April 29 – May 10, fans can enter to win a trip to meet Dave 1 at the NYC event at www.frankandoak.com/dave1/nyc.

The Frank & Oak x Dave 1 collection launches May 21, available exclusively through frankandoak.com

PORTER ROBINSON TO RELEASE “EASY” SINGLE WITH MAT ZO ON MAY 7

After producing one of last year’s biggest dance hits “Language” , which sold more than 250,000 copies, Porter Robinson has teamed up with UK producer Mat Zo to officially release their single “Easy”. The house anthem with feel-good soulfulness will be released in North America via Astralwerks on May 7th. The track – which hit #1 on Beatport and Hype Machine, and premiered to great acclaim on Radio 1 by Pete Tong – will feature a range of new remixes including Belgian producer Modek, indie darlings Lamaitre, and drum n’ bass legend Andy C.

Pigeon Hole – June audio

Pigeon Hole are two Vancouver Island based producer/mc’s with a constant evolving sound and ability to crank out next level music. Their output as members of Sweatshop Union is evidence of leaps in style, delivery and approach from album to album. ‘Chimp Blood’ the group’s second record out now on Urbnet, delivers a sound so powerful it’s impossible to ignore.

In 2010, Pigeon Hole released their critically acclaimed debut LP, ‘Age Like Astronauts’. Using the MPC 2000, they pieced together a mix of samples, analogue synths, live instruments, and sharp lyricism – their debut outing spoke to listeners from the opening note to its final fade out. The audio translated to the stage, sending Pigeon Hole on a ruthless touring schedule, annihilating audiences across North America. Along with Sweatshop Union their energetic live show invaded the festival circuit, notably Shambhala, Rifflandia, as well as the world-renowned SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas.

Trading in their original blueprint for a heavier bass-driven electronic sound, Pigeon Hole attack with all new artillery. ‘Chimp Blood’ thrashes over a foundation of grimey synths, sampled and chopped over machine gun drum programming, 808s, and massive bass. An epic hybrid of music, ‘Chimp Blood’ will make you feel like you can levitate.
