Reviews Wu-Tang Clan

The GZA/Genius at Richards on Richards, Vancouver – August 27th, 2008

reviewed by Arthur Sapounas

On the eve of the highly anticipated 1st ever GZA show in Vancouver, there wasn’t any way to rain on the parade. The rain had subsided and the grimy weather created the perfect mood for his “Liquid Swords” tour. Until, of course, we waited in the wrongly labeled guest list line for over 30 minutes to get into the sold out show.

Alcohol fueled the mood from then on, and double fisting was required due to the ridiculous bar lineups. The only complaint I have was for the venue and the disorganization that had GZA go on really late with no opener. We were by the bar doing shots when the DJ cut the music and threw on the opening skit to “Liquid Swords,” signifying that it was on! He played every song from the classic album, but front to back. It was reminiscent of the older era of hip hop; no openers and a grimy sweaty venue, an MC and a mic.

Once the beat for “4th Chamber” began, the crowd went nuts. GZA’s level of energy was quite high throughout the whole Liquid Swords set and the crowd responded likewise. Notable standout tracks were “Liquid Swords”, “Cold World” and “Duel of the Iron Mic.” It was a very smart move on his behalf to have a tour for an album that was 14 years old, now, with albums like Nas’ “Hip Hop is Dead” proving that they just don’t make it like they used to.

The New York MC continued with solid energy throughout the performance of the album and jumped into material from “Legend of the Liquid Swords,” playing “Stay in Line”, “Animal Planet” and “Knock Knock” which while played well, the crowd just wasn’t as into. “Triumph” from Wu-Tang Forever changed that, with the crowd getting back into the moment.

While I wouldn’t say the show ended poorly with the next couple of tracks, it definitely wasn’t a climatic ending. We all left satisfied and reminded of why we got into Hip Hop in the first place.

14. Math Head – Turn The Music Up (AC Slater Remix)
15. The Aston Shuffle feat. Tommie Sunshine – Stomp Yo Shoes (Bloody Beetroots Clap Remix – Aston Shuffle Vocal Edit)

“The title ‘Relax, This Won’t Hurt’ comes directly from the last words Hunter S. Thompson wrote before taking his own life but I see it as a three-fold title. I love Thompson’s work and it is a tribute to him but is also very telling of how I see the music I used to tell the story on this CD. This is music mostly unheard in the US outside of underground clubs and will sound rather new to most listeners. The third reference the title refers to is the state of this country and how every day we are tricked into thinking the decisions that are made by the people who lead us are in our best interest when they clearly are not. Please note, I picked the title a full month before the economy really went down the tubes.” – Tommie Sunshine

Influenced by equal parts New Wave, Rock & Roll, and House music, American rave legend and Brooklyn, NY resident Tommie Sunshine is raising the bar. Covering ground as artist, remixer, producer, taste-maker, DJ, and songwriter and traveling the globe with his legendary dj sets it won’t be long before there will be, at least a little, Tommie Sunshine in your life.

Tommie’s latest endeavor is a hard hitting, bass heavy, house music mix album titled “Relax, This Won’t Hurt” releasing on Ultra Records October 21st, and will again set the Sunshine standard of innovative music made for the dance floor.

“To be totally truthful, this new genre of music was pioneered by Basement Jaxx and they are the ones who specifically made me interested in music like this. I would also like to note that the artists whose music I used on this CD are the best of the best and the only missing ones are A1 Bassline, Herve, HeavyFeet, Hannah Holland and Fake Blood (so many tracks I wanted). These are the artists I play each and every time I DJ and the electronic musicians that I most admire. The CD is a wild ride filled with musical influences from around the world and I covered as much ground as anyone can in just over an hour while giving the tracks room to play out. I can only hope this collection of music inspires the listener the way that each of these tracks inspired me to include them in the mix.” – Tommie Sunshine

Blissful Balearic moments courtesy of Above & Beyond’s chart-hitting side project with Justine Suissa…

Ibiza – the birthplace of modern dance music. 20 years on and the island remains an important catalyst for today’s hottest dance talents. This year, OceanLab, the project featuring Above & Beyond and singer/songwriter Justine Suissa spent several weeks holed up in a villa there finishing their debut album, ‘Sirens Of The Sea’.

Seeped in Balearic brilliance, ‘Sirens Of The Sea’ is a mix of blissed out epics and dancefloor cuts. An album of depth, variety and serene beauty, showcasing a level of songwriting and production rarely witnessed within electronic music, and already drawing comparisons with bands such as Zero 7 and Everything But The Girl.

As OceanLab, Tony, Paavo and Jono’s work with Justine has led to a string of club anthems such as ‘Clear Blue Water’ (Top 50 UK Sales Chart), ‘Sky Falls Down’ and ‘Beautiful Together’, with each release adding to OceanLab’s reputation as one of clubland’s best loved vocal dance projects. They crossed into the mainstream consciousness when their 4th single, ‘Satellite’, was A-listed on Radio 1 and broke into the Top 20 of the UK sales chart, enjoying similar success globally.

Above & Beyond were voted No.11 in the world’s Top 25 dance acts of the past 25 years according to Mixmag’s readers, and as DJs, are ranked at No.6 in DJ Magazine’s Top 100. Their debut artist album, ‘Tri-State’, was one of the top selling dance albums on iTunes in 2006.

Tony McGuiness from OceanLab said:

“OceanLab has been a part of the Above & Beyond family since the very start (‘Satellite’ is probably our most popular song when we DJ, even now), so it was only a matter of time before we did an album with Justine. With Tri-State out of the way we started writing for the album in earnest two years ago. Justine has a unique lyrical perspective and we’ve decided to make that centre stage as much as possible, so the album is again a very personal statement by us. We hope you like it!”
