EYEDEA & ABILITIES RELEASE FIRST ALBUM IN FIVE YEARS RHYMESAYERS ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE BY THE THROAT ON JULY 21

EYEDEA & ABILITIES RELEASE FIRST ALBUM IN FIVE YEARS RHYMESAYERS ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE BY THE THROAT ON JULY 21

A duo thoroughly steeped in hip-hop accolades, the Minnesota-based duo Eyedea and Abilities have returned with their brand new album By The Throat, out July 21st on Rhymesayers Entertainment. Their first album since the breakout 2004 release E&A, By The Throat’s songs range from intensely personal topics to the more esoteric (quantum mechanics). The end result is leaps and bounds beyond what MC Eyedea is perhaps best known for, his prowess as a battle rapper (winner of HBO’s Blaze Battle, Scribble Jam and several others). DJ Abilities, also a well-known battle vet and contributor to El-P’s now-classic Fantastic Damage, adds heavily to the sonic soundscape of this album, which advances beyond boom-bap hip-hop into rock-fueled guitar riffs, gritty production and melodic songwriting.

Eyedea and Abilities were instrumental in the wave of independent hip-hop that includes Atmosphere, El-P, Aesop Rock, Living Legends and several other seminal acts. By The Throat is their most progressive and refined effort to date.

E & A will be performing at Rhymesayers’ Soundset ’09 on May 24th and will be headlining a tour in the fall of 2009. They have also been confirmed for the following Rock the Bells dates this summer.

06.27 – Chicago, IL @ First Midwest Bank Amphitheater
06.28 – Detroit, MI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre
07.05 – Toronto, ON @ Molson Amphitheater

Illogic Gets Lyrical with Diabolical Fun New Album March 24 on Weightless Recordings

Illogic Gets Lyrical with Diabolical Fun New Album March 24 on Weightless Recordings

Columbus, OH — What do you get when you mix classicly energetic lyricism with the street-savvy edge of MC’s in 2009? Ohio mic wrecker Illogic may very well know the answer to that question… or rather, he might be the answer.

On March 24, Illogic will unleash his third full-length album entitled Diabolical Fun on Weightless Recordings. His new single “Let’s Go” has already captivated fans and critics alike with aggressively enthusiastic bars of pure Hip Hop, and Illogic is set to re-establish himself as a force to be reckoned with in the independent underground and beyond.

As a native of Columbus, Ohio, Illogic spent years developing his his gift for witty lyrics and naturally dynamic performance abilities. The young MC released his debut album Unforeseen Shadows in 1999 to critical acclaim, and shared the stage with emerging Midwest talent like Common, Atmosphere, Eyedea, One Be Lo and Royce Da 5’9″.

By 2003, he had released the Got Lyrics? EP and his sophomore album, Celestial Clockwork. Everything was amazing business-wise for Illogic, but behind the scenes, something wasn’t sitting right with the budding rap star. Without much explanation, Illogic disappeared from the public eye at what seemed to be the peak of his career.

“Once Celestial Clockwork dropped, the ball was rolling,” Illogic explains. “The album was well received along with my stage show. I was touring heavily with many prominent underground acts, yet on top of all of this I was married with two children and a third on the way. The toll that this took on my family life was immeasurable by any stretch of the imagination, because music and being on tour was my job. Missing the birth of my third son was my wake-up call. I then knew it was time to slow down and get my priorities in order. I had to find myself for the first time.”

Rejuvenated after nearly a four-year hiatus, Illogic flexed his mic skills in 2008 with the EP One Bar Left. He began performing spot dates again, and has recorded several projects, including two full-length albums, all waiting to be heard after the release of Diabolical Fun.

Produced in its entirety by Ill Poetic, known best for his creative Budden/Portishead & NIN/Outkast mash-ups, Diabolical Fun is an intense, enjoyable rhymefest for Illogic. The hype delivery on the single “Let’s Go” is just a taste of the rap vet’s intention to share his renewed excitement with the world.

“My previous works were denser, darker and in some ways depressing, because that is where I was in my life at that time and that is the music I needed to make for that time,” Illogic expresses. “I’m at a different place in my life now, and my music has to reflect that, so Diabolical Fun is brighter, a little more fun, and definitely more performance-geared. For once I know I’m ready for all that is ahead of me, and I am thankful for all that is behind me.”

ABOUT ILLOGIC

“Illogic is complicated” – a simple statement of fact realized and accepted by the enigmatic artist whose life and career is anything but ‘simple’. Illogic stormed the scene in the early 2000’s with his seminal releases: Unforeseen Shadows, Got Lyrics and Celestial Clockwork. Unexpectedly, while 2003 shaped up to be a Cinderella year (a solid nationwide fan base; growing industry buzz surrounding upcoming projects), Illogic made the difficult decision to step away from the limelight, instead focusing on his marriage and growing family.

Fast forward to 2009; Illogic returns hungrier than ever to release Diabolical Fun (Weightless Recordings) on March 24, this time along with producer Ill Poetic, known for The World is Ours, Budden/Portishead & NIN/Outkast mash-ups.

Combining Illogic’s gift for one-of-a-kind wordplay and impeccable delivery with Ill Poetic’s knack for soulfully intense tracks, Diabolical Fun will quickly remind fans of why they fell in love with Illogic in the first place and grab the attention of those who have never heard of him before. The recently released EP One Bar Left has been garnering a healthy buzz in the online community, and serves as an appetizer for what’s to come.

Columbus, Ohio-based Illogic has always strived to take complex rhyme schemes and metaphoric storytelling to new levels of the art form. In 1999, the release of Unforeseen Shadows caught a ground swell of positive press and stellar reviews for Illogic and the then-indie upstart label Weightless Recordings. By the time 2003 rolled around, Illogic had released two other projects on Weightless Recordings – the Got Lyrics? EP (2001) and the long awaited full length follow up to Unforeseen, Celestial Clockwork (2003). Expectations for the new album were high, as fans had waited almost two additional years to see the release due to competing priorities at the label.

In Spring 2003, Illogic was named one of URB Magazine’s “Next 100”artists to check for, along with the likes of Little Brother, a then-widely unknown Kanye West, and others who have since “blown up.” When the album finally did release, early reviews were positive. However, Illogic’s career abruptly halted with seemingly no explanation.

After over four years without a major album release, a renewed sense of self, and a clear vision for the future, Illogic now more than ever seeks to shatter the glass ceiling of the underground and give the industry and masses what they so clearly need… a truly gifted emcee.

“The last few years have been some of my greatest,” says Illogic. “I feel like I am ready to receive the blessings waiting for me as I share this gift that I have been given. I am truly focused and ready to give the people something to talk about…something to believe in. I think music…the way we hear music, and the way we hear artists, are completely changing now. Fans are looking for something real, something tangible, and something they can relate too. I believe that as a society we are getting tired of the fantasy world that music has been centered on as of late. All we want is the truth, and I believe I have a truth yet to be heard – because I am truly yet to be heard. I believe I have unfinished business to attend to. I know God is not done using me and I will fulfill my purpose.”

Though out of the spotlight, Illogic continued to play spot dates periodically, recorded several compilations, EP’s, and has two other completed full length projects waiting to be heard in addition to Diabolical Fun. With nearly a decade of experience under his belt, Illogic has shared stages with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Rakim, Casual, Atmosphere, Eyedea, Brother Ali, The Roots, Common, One Be Lo, Royce Da 5’9” and many other nationally recognized acts. If you have not had the pleasure of hearing material from him in the past, in the words of Spike Lee’s classic School Daze: “WAKE UP”!

In a time when the music industry is slowly freeing itself from the shackles of one-hit wonders rhyming about their chains, rims and clothes, Illogic offers substance, word play and just plain…well…ill logic. Listen Closely!

“My previous works were denser, darker and in some ways depressing, because that is where I was in my life at that time and that is the music I needed to make for that time,” Illogic expresses. “I’m at a different place in my life now and my music has to reflect that, so Diabolical Fun is brighter, a little more fun, and definitely more performance-geared. For once I know I’m ready for all that is ahead of me, and I am thankful for all that is behind me.”

SUPER PRODUCER JAKE ONE SIGNS TO RHYMESAYERS TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM! FEATURING APPEARANCES FROM FREEWAY, BROTHER ALI, MF DOOM, YOUNG BUCK, SLUG of ATMOSPHERE, M.O.P., BUSTA RHYMES, LITTLE BROTHER, PRODIGY, ALCHEMIST, CASUAL, KEAK DA SNEAK & MORE!

Over the past 13 years, Rhymesayers Entertainment has brought critically acclaimed artists such as Atmosphere, Brother Ali, MF DOOM, Soul Position, P.O.S., Psalm One, Eyedea & Abilities, Grayskul & more to the the attention of the world and in 2008, Rhymesayers gives you the debut album, White Van Music, from Seattle hip hop producer, Jake One.

To many, Jake One is known as part of the G-Unit production team that has been a part of their top 10 Billboard charting and platinum success. But Jake One has an equally important voice in the underground hip-hop scene and for many, will serve as the bridge between the mainstream and indie worlds. Taking a cue from Vitamin D in 1992, Jake One put down his first beat on a Casio Voice Sampler and got his official start at Conception Records in the late 90s, citing DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, Pete Rock & DJ Quik as his early influences. Jake One made his name doing production work with artists like the Gift of Gab, Boom Bap Project & John Cena (yes, the pro-wrestler!) and went on to solidify his presence in mainstream hip-hop, appearing on albums by De La Soul, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Young Buck, E-40, G-Unit & Lil Scrappy, among others.

White Van Music (October 2008) marks Jake One’s first foray into producing a complete album in his well reputed style. The self-proclaimed ‘perfect beat writer’ and master record collector has put some of the most recognizable voices in hip- hop against a glitchy & soulful musical backdrop. Reading like a who’s who of hip-hop, White Van Music features appearances from Freeway, M.O.P., Slug, MF DOOM, Brother Ali, Busta Rhymes, Young Buck, Prodigy, Alchemist, Casual, Keak Da Sneak, Little Brother, Evidence, eLZhi, Royce Da 5’9″, Posdnuos, Black Milk, Nottz, Bishop Lamont, Ish (aka Butterfly of Digable Planets) and more.

Chicago’s indie hip-hop stalwarts Apoc and Rel mix 1940’s noir film influences with classic soul chops and staccato synths to conjure a classic debut as The Ritz

Chicago’s indie hip-hop stalwarts Apoc and Rel mix 1940’s noir film influences with classic soul chops and staccato synths to conjure a classic debut as The Ritz.

For their first full-length album as The Ritz, Chicago’s indie hip-hop stalwarts Apoc and Rel wanted to showcase their ability to explore a diverse array of styles while still creating a cohesive and affecting hip-hop record. They have accomplished this with their ultra-unique debut, The Night of Day.

Leading up to the creation of The Night of Day, producer (and occasional rapper) Rel honed his skills behind the boards by producing tracks for local hip-hop Chicago acts such as Elfamail and Moodswangz of Giraffe Nuts, and engineering recording sessions for hip-hop icons like Raekwon, Killah Priest and Pace Won.

Meanwhile, Apoc had been steadily establishing himself in the Chicago and San Diego hip-hop scenes via his three previously released albums and a strong history on the road motivated by an intensely nomadic nature that kept him moving whenever he wasn’t in the studio. In the process, Apoc was able to share the stage with hip-hop luminaries such as Slick Rick, Pharoahe Monch, and Mix Master Mike as well as indie hip-hop heavyweights like Eyedea & Abilities, Lyrics Born and Living Legends. Apoc’s live shows became renowned for his wide array of rhyme techniques, humorous stage antics and eccentricities.

Finding inspiration in the themes and aesthetics of the gritty noir films of the 1940’s and 50’s, Apoc and Rel fulfill the promise that was heard in their past collaborations on projects like Apoc’s 2005 release Gods & Ghosts and their contribution to the 2004 compilation The Zooey Files. In The Night of Day, Apoc uses the language of noir and relies on the genre’s motifs of scorned lovers, disenchanted heroes, mysterious pasts and a corrupt and violent world, to spit cinematic tales describing the underbelly of modern American society.

Utilizing his vast catalog of styles, Apoc’s nihilistic stories are told with fervor, from the sing songy raps of “Heartless” or “Waiting” to the rapid fire delivery of the title track. He even gives some impressive nods to his native Chicago exhibiting his aptitude for spitting the city’s signature double-time sound on “The Getaway” and “Blown.”

To compliment Apoc’s striking style, Rel uses a palette that includes classic soul chops, staccato synths, and haunting strings. Rel’s tracks bounce from dark and evocative to soulful and melodic, with snippets from some of the film noir movies that influenced the creation of the album. Also contributing on The Night of Day are fellow Chicagoans Racecar of Modill, and Rhymesayers recording artist Psalm One, as well as cuts performed by battle veteran DJ Onceamonth.

The Night of Day’s genius is in the accomplishment of that cohesive and affecting whole that Apoc and Rel initially sought. The wide variety of sounds, styles and influences that permeate the record allow for the hip-hop fan to be challenged and the novice to have a spot to get on board.
