2007 HILLTOP HOODS INITIATIVE WINNER ANNOUNCED

2007 HILLTOP HOODS INITIATIVE WINNER ANNOUNCED

On the eve of the 2007 ARIA awards at which they hold 3 nominations, Australia’s premier hip-hop artists, Hilltop Hoods, have announced the winner of the 2007 Hilltop Hoods Initiative.

In 2005 the Hilltop Hoods took it upon themselves to give something back to the Hip-Hop community, and in recognition of the significant role that South Australian Government funding played in their early careers, they created the Hilltop Hoods Initiative, a grant that in 2007 has been increased to $5000.

This annual initiative is aimed at assisting young and emerging South Australian Hip-Hop artists to manufacture and distribute a CD, along with two mentorship sessions with Hilltop Hoods’ Co-manager, PJ Murton.

The fund is managed by Arts SA in association with Carclew Youth Arts and the winner is selected by a local panel of Hip-Hop experts, who described this year as the most competitive round yet.

We are very pleased to announce the winner of 2007’s Hilltop Hoods Initiative is James Albert, aka JimBlah, a 22 year old Indigenous artist from Mile End.

“We first got involved in the initiative to give emerging hip-hop artists a chance to jump start their careers. It’s great to see that the quality of this year’s applications reflect just how much talent is out there in South Australia”. Hilltop Hoods.

PEGZ Burn City ALBUM ANNOUNCEMENT

The landmark 3rd album from acclaimed Melbourne MC Pegz, Burn City is unlike anything you’ve heard. Rich textures of rock guitars and soulful horns create a distinct 70’s soundscape, while splashes of jazz and funk offset predictability. Littered with street New York samples, every song is political, insightful and personal with deeply uplifting undertones.

A storyteller of our times, Pegz’s descriptive ability to simplify the complex with relatable lyrics and to communicate global themes with a unique perspective and clarity forms the essence of Burn City. Containing anthems like ‘7 Days 6 Nights’ and ‘No Attachments’, underground classics like ‘Propaganda’ and ‘Block To Block’, the lighter side of ‘Just Married’ and the acute social commentary of the title track ‘Burn City’, this album is a profound and essential statement of our times.

Burn City will be Pegz’s final statement as a solo MC. Having spent 2 years and hundreds of hours crafting verses and hooks, with months of refinement before recording, arranging and mixing each track, this will be the final solo album from this stalwart of the Australian Hip Hop scene. 2008 will see the birth of Pegz’s new group, allowing him to lighten the load with a shared creative process.

On his critically acclaimed 2005 album, Axis, Pegz gained feature album status on Triple J and dozens of community stations including 4ZZZ and FBI, while the last 2 years have seen him tour the country relentlessly, building a committed following with his magnetic and energetic live performances. Arguably Australia’s most successful solo MC, Pegz observes that the key to his success is “loving it enough to work hard.”

Renowned producers Jase (Nubreed), Plutonic Lab (Muph & Plutonic) and Suffa (Hilltop Hoods) presented Pegz with hundreds of beats from which Pegz has selected every sound carefully to create his vision for Burn City. The album features guests including legendary West Coast MC Planet Asia, vocalists Kye and Reagan (Pegz’s sister), local heavyweights Muph, Funkoars, Vents and Drapht and includes stellar newcomers Patto and Illy, with cuts by the one and only DJ Bonez.

Burn City is not to be missed.

HILLTOP HOODS – THE HARD ROAD: RESTRUNG GOES GOLD

HILLTOP HOODS – THE HARD ROAD: RESTRUNG GOES GOLD

Obese Records and Hilltop Hoods are proud to announce that Hilltop Hoods’ 5th album, ‘The Hard Road: Restrung’, has been certified Gold.

In early 2007, Hilltop Hoods returned to the studio to re-compose their #1 platinum selling album ‘The Hard Road’ with the assistance of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Jamie Messenger.

‘The Hard Road: Restrung’ was launched in May 2007 to a 7,000 strong sellout crowd in a unique live performance with the 31 piece Adelaide Symphony Orchestra at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

Hilltop Hoods are the first and only Australian Hip-Hop group to achieve Platinum sales with their previous albums ‘The Calling’ and ‘The Hard Road’. ’Restrung’ also marks the first time a Hip-Hop remix album, either Australian or international, has achieved gold sales status in Australia. These achievements cement Hilltop Hoods at the forefront of not only the Australian Hip Hop industry, but the Australian music industry as a whole.

Our most sincere congratulations go out to Hilltop Hoods and we thank all our colleagues, retailers and associates for their continued support.
