Hardcore Gentlemen – “Hardcore Gentlemen” Blast From The Past Video Recalls Days Of ONYX, M.O.P., & Das EFX

The Video:

HARDCORE GENTLEMEN is a early-mid 1990s rap group consisting of group members RAPZ KAOTIC, REEFER SUTHERLAND and KILLAH SILK. The group was based in Brooklynati, USA and saw great success with their classic and only single “HARDCORE GENTLEMEN” (DJ Jurx Records, 1994). Unfortunately, after selling a platinum single and a gold album (RUGGED & SMOOTH, DJ Jurx Records, 1994) their follow-up single, “BRUSH YA TEEF WIT IT” fell on deaf ears and led to the group’s destiny of being one-hit-wonders.

Immediately following the release of their hit-single “HARDCORE GENTLEMEN” and in promotion of their debut LP, Hardcore Gentlemen toured the United States and parts of Canada, but ended the tour abruptly when group member KILLAH SILK was slapped with 14 paternity suits from 13 different women. A State Court jury ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and the rap group was forced to return home and try to maintain their momentum doing local gigs in Brooklynati. After the lack of success surrounding their touring efforts, the group faded into obscurity and is remembered only for their successful, self-titled single. They are regularly revisited on countless “Where Are They Now?” television shows profiling hip-hop acts.

So where are they now? In May of 2009, Hardcore Gentlemen attempted to do a 15-year anniversary show celebrating their classic and only single. The plan was to headline a show at Humphrey Lefty’s (a concert hall in their own hometown) and to perform their hit 15 times in a row. Tragically, during the 5th performance of “Hardcore Gentlemen” the group became entangled in a fight on stage, resulting in a drawn firearm by one of their hypemen. Shots were fired, and while nobody was killed, two of the group’s three members (RAPZ KAOTIC and REEFER SUTHERLAND) were arrested and are currently facing charges for concealing a weapon and endangering minors.

DILATED PEOPLES & BEAT JUNKIES DJ/PRODUCER, DJ BABU, PREPS THE RELEASE OF HIS LONG AWAITED STUDIO LP DUCK SEASON 3 | DJ BABU’S DUCK SEASON 3 FEATURES TRACKS WITH BISHOP LAMONT, MF DOOM, DILATED PEOPLES, SEAN PRICE, TERMANOLOGY, M.O.P., LITTLE BROTHER, KARDINAL OFFISHAL, STRONG ARM STEADY, GUILTY SIMPSON, PERCEE P, A.G

A world-famous DJ with active memberships in Dilated Peoples and Beat Junkies among his most notable accomplishments, DJ Babu has made a noteworthy evolution. The Los Angeles-based turntablist also stands as one of underground rap’s fastest-rising producers.

Waiting almost five years after the release of the previous Duck Season installments, DJ BABU has been carefully crafting the final saga in his highly acclaimed hip-hop trilogy. What started out for Babu as a DJ compilation, the Duck Season series has come full circle to become a production showcase for the legendary turntablist; not to mention, his finest work to date.

“It started out as a mixtape that featured some of my favorite tracks,” explains DJ Babu. “Now it has fully evolved into a platform of my own production. The album is still presented in the classic Beat Junkie mixtape style, but that’s just a clever way for me to disguise my LP.” Indeed, working with Dilated Peoples aided DJ Babu in his evolution as a producer. Throughout the trio’s four albums, DJ Babu was steadily gaining knowledge and insight on how to craft meaningful and memorable soundbeds. Now, he has combined his far-reaching creative abilities into one project, the rock-solid Duck Season 3.

This evolution from DJ to producer is on full display throughout DJ Babu’s sonically superior Duck Season 3. The fast-moving collection showcases all of Babu’s quickly expanding talents, from mixing, juggling, blending and scratching — as well as producing. Entirely produced by Babu, the line-up on Duck Season 3 reads like a hip-hop’s who’s who. While Babu includes many familiar faces like M.O.P., MF DOOM, Dilated Peoples and Sean Price, he also plants his ear to the streets, recruiting some of today’s hottest new talent like Bishop Lamont and Termanology.

A West Coast veteran in his own right, Babu has achieved a sound that can’t be labeled by region or style. This album could be equally appreciated in the Bronx, Compton or anywhere in between. Duck Season 3 is a treat for all the true B-Boy’s out there and a testament to the fact that hip-hop’s golden era is alive and well and as Babu concludes the vine between the golden era and today is still deeply rooted “allot of the DJs that I looked up to became great producers, from Dr. Dre to DJ Premier to Pete Rock. In a lot of ways, I’m trying to carry that same torch, where hip-hop is still rooted within DJing and records.”

SUPER PRODUCER JAKE ONE SIGNS TO RHYMESAYERS TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM! FEATURING APPEARANCES FROM FREEWAY, BROTHER ALI, MF DOOM, YOUNG BUCK, SLUG of ATMOSPHERE, M.O.P., BUSTA RHYMES, LITTLE BROTHER, PRODIGY, ALCHEMIST, CASUAL, KEAK DA SNEAK & MORE!

Over the past 13 years, Rhymesayers Entertainment has brought critically acclaimed artists such as Atmosphere, Brother Ali, MF DOOM, Soul Position, P.O.S., Psalm One, Eyedea & Abilities, Grayskul & more to the the attention of the world and in 2008, Rhymesayers gives you the debut album, White Van Music, from Seattle hip hop producer, Jake One.

To many, Jake One is known as part of the G-Unit production team that has been a part of their top 10 Billboard charting and platinum success. But Jake One has an equally important voice in the underground hip-hop scene and for many, will serve as the bridge between the mainstream and indie worlds. Taking a cue from Vitamin D in 1992, Jake One put down his first beat on a Casio Voice Sampler and got his official start at Conception Records in the late 90s, citing DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, Pete Rock & DJ Quik as his early influences. Jake One made his name doing production work with artists like the Gift of Gab, Boom Bap Project & John Cena (yes, the pro-wrestler!) and went on to solidify his presence in mainstream hip-hop, appearing on albums by De La Soul, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Young Buck, E-40, G-Unit & Lil Scrappy, among others.

White Van Music (October 2008) marks Jake One’s first foray into producing a complete album in his well reputed style. The self-proclaimed ‘perfect beat writer’ and master record collector has put some of the most recognizable voices in hip- hop against a glitchy & soulful musical backdrop. Reading like a who’s who of hip-hop, White Van Music features appearances from Freeway, M.O.P., Slug, MF DOOM, Brother Ali, Busta Rhymes, Young Buck, Prodigy, Alchemist, Casual, Keak Da Sneak, Little Brother, Evidence, eLZhi, Royce Da 5’9″, Posdnuos, Black Milk, Nottz, Bishop Lamont, Ish (aka Butterfly of Digable Planets) and more.
